Dave Grohl drags Taylor Swift on stage in London (3 Viewers)

I’m also not a Dallas cowboys fan
For many of the same reasons
(I won’t do my Jeff Gordon/nascar take just yet)
I know you're probably being a bit tongue in cheek, but I mean, did you stop being a Saints or football fan because of the Cowboys?

And the same with pretty much anything else. There's plenty of non-corporate country music you would enjoy if you actually went and looked, both before and after Brooks.

The funny thing is by and large, I have no use for country music, but there are some country songs I actually do enjoy in spite of not being a country fan in general.

How could we not?
I am not a fan of Mr Brooks
He marks (for me) when country went corporate- and, thus, when I lost interest in country

I mean, sure, but I'm not a fan of Taylor Swift because I have never had any interest in pop music and still don't.

I mean, I get that there is lots of nasty stuff out there about Swift who is just going about her life and I really don't care if others think she's great, but I think if it's fair to say that Garth Brooks is terrible, and I think he is, it's fair to say that Taylor Swift is terrible.

Sure, I still held onto my outlaws, plus I picked up the Lyle Lovetts and Lucinda Williams and kd langs and cowboy junkies ; but by and large the genre got co-opted - like huge-ly
From anti-authoritarian to mainstream jingoism
tbf hip hop struggled against a corporate takeover as well, but it seemed to re-emerge as an artist driven medium

Coincidentally I was thinking about the country corporate thing today - the Today show was on in the background and they had some blonde country star on the plaza - it struck me how costumey the whole thing was. Her backup band was in what I could only describe as contemporary grand ol opry and she was wearing country Barbie except blue instead of pink
Like none of the look was anywhere close to real - but it was also trying to evoke something that might have been real at some point

Well sure but the thread wasn’t about her being terrible as much as it was fading rock star commenting on current pop cultural phenom
It’s Martin Scorsese weighing in on Marvel (if Martin Scorsese had, maybe, the talent of a Kevin smith)
It’s Jerry Seinfeld whining about 🤷🏽‍♂️

What I’d said about TS is that I’m agnostic- my students like her and love to tell me every ridiculous change in the saga of TS and I’m fine listening to them

It doesn't matter to me what she's doing on stage, it doesn't change the fact that she's hot!

I couldn't name two songs by Swift but I'll say that it's sad that he has to bring up her name to get attention.
apparently Grohl's teenage daughter drug Swift about burning like 10 billion gallons in jet fuel and all, then preaching saving the planet. hypocrite and all. Swifties came at her with death threats and all kinda of crap. pretty sure Dave was venting at the source of the toxicity in his own way. swift is known for being a ruthless female dog when it comes to ppl that criticize her.

* This coming from a 37 year old dude who has no reference other than his teenage neices

I guess. I'm just saying we should all be free to say something sucks if we think it sucks. And, I personally I'm not a fan of Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks, or Dave Grohl. And those aren't even close to my most controversial music opinions.

I just find it a little odd that people are so protective of Swift and not of Garth Brooks or Gohl for that matter. Though, I do may my own pet theory about why Taylor Swift is such a big star and why she might be protected where as others might not.

Well ‘biggest pop star’ is always going to have some built in controversy because popular and great seldom have much Venn diagram overlap
Tom Clancy is always going to outsell Cormac McCarthy
The most popular sitcoms are always going to be pedestrian stories with non-complex characters
There has to be something middlebrow to appeal to the largest number of people
A bjork is always going to be a more challenging artist than TS
Same for Tom Waits and Garth Brooks
TS and Garth Brooks will always fall short on critical analysis

I don't disagree with much of that, but I think there's a difference between saying someone sucks and deliberately trying to tear someone down, whether from jealousy or whatever. Like saying her music is blah, ok, but saying she's lip synching when that's probably not true or that she's being inauthentic or whatever if not justified isn't really fair to her, or Brooks or whoever.

Justified criticism I can deal with. Irrational hatred, not so much.
