Video Dennis Allen has the locker room fired up after win vs. Browns (4 Viewers)

It’s always a big deal when a dome team can go into a frigid miserable cold environment and get the win over a team that was fighting for their playoff lives.

That was the most I’ve enjoyed a Saints game in a while.

I don’t know what it will do for the team going forward - but to be able to go blow for blow with a team who’s used to playing in a harsh environment and win a game that - albeit maybe temporarily - prolongs your season another week.

That’s good stuff.

Congrats DA. Been a wretched season but that was a nice little fun Christmas present.

I really don't like a lot of what he's done.... QBs, game management, and the undisciplined look of this team...

But all along, as I look for signs that he's lost the locker room, it's just not there. The players have been playing hard for him. That is clear. And if ever there was a game that would show if they quit on him, this would've been it. But the effort was strong.

So I'm re-evaluating. Not ready to endorse another year of Dennis Allen yet, but I'm a little less sure. 2 more games to watch.

man, some of you people put waaaaay too much emphasis on locker room speech delivery. you think belichick is a ra ra guy? any reid? only thing that matters is respect.

It’s a leadership trait that most coaches (and professional leaders in general) possess. Leaders that give bad speeches, stutters and stumbles, etc. generally don’t command the same level of respect or inspire confidence to a room full of alphas, especially when the team is already failing.

Belichik is a cheap counter-example to this that’s convenient for you to use. He’s stoic by nature though and isn’t TRYING to be ra-ra. He is a rare breed and more importantly, has the skins on the wall to command the respect he gets.

Not sure if you’ve ever played sports or been around a locker room environment, but for me, this guy just doesn’t look the part in this setting. He’s “acting.”

By the way, Andy Reid is one of the best in the business at locker room speeches and firing the guys up.

I'm not quite sure I'd call that fired up........ Maybe my idea of enthusiasm and yours is a bit different. Thought it was still awkward and kind of looking for words. Not horrible but doesn't give me any hope that there's a leader in there somewhere.

This. You can tell he has no idea where he’s going with his words.

Some people just don’t understand that there are certain traits a leader of a testosterone filled locker room full of alpha males are supposed to possess, and the ability to fire up the troops confidently and not stumble with words is one of them.

I think part of the reason Allen hasn't lost the room is that players know who he is and know him well. He's coached in the league a long time and in spite of the sometimes cringe post game speeches, the players would still run through a brick wall for him. Us fans aren't around for the moments when they're building camaraderie and friendships during the offseason and training camps. As the proverbial saying goes, you don't know until you know.

I'm ambivalent about Allen because the way he calls games makes me pull my hair out at times. He doesn't take risks and is entirely too conservative for my liking. My concern is I'm not sure he's the type of guy who is the answer at HC. He's a very good coordinator and assistant coach, but I don't think he's built to be a HC. It's not an insult, it's just what it is. 95%+ of people aren't built to lead. That doesn't mean anything is wrong with them. Just that we need a true head coach guiding the team. I hope Gayle can convince Payton to return because he's a proven leader and I think he'll return refreshed and ready to hit the ground running.

Even if Benson/Loomis trade Payton for picks, I hope they'll do their due diligence and move on from Allen. All due respect to Allen, I don't think he's the answer at HC.
