Derek Carr was a top 10 QB in 2023 (1 Viewer)

I agree with those who say we are having this convo because of the last 4 games.

However, I would not discount those last four games. First, they were all late-season games against teams that were still alive for the playoffs - two of which actually did make the playoffs. Second, as has been pointed out, he was in a new system, so you might expect him to be worse at the start - if he now understands the system, the last four games are potentially a truer test of where is at. Finally, the Saints fired OC Pete Carmichael; we'll probably never know for sure, but is it possible that Pete's role was minimized late in the season, especially if the Saints knew, and Pete could surmise, that he was a goner at season's end? IF that's true - admittedly a hypothesis - that bodes really well for Carr.
How would you not discount those last 4 games? Those games were not against teams still alive for the playoffs bc 2 of those opponents were in our 💩 division that none of the 4 NFC South teams were good enough to put a stranglehold on the division. Our entire division was average at best, yet we (with our alleged top 10 QB) failed to win the division. That’s just common sense. No one out side of some of you Black and Gold sunshine pumpers has DC4 as a top 10 QB. I challenge anyone to go find end of the year rankings and show me 1 that has DC4 in their top 10. It won’t happen bc he wasn’t. You can’t cut it down to a 4/5/6 game sample size bc that’s not how it works. I will say it again……I am a HUGE DC4 fan, he is a true warrior, he finally got it to click at the end of the season, he showed us something that we can feel good about going forward, and if we get a viable OC then the sky is the limit, but in no way shape or form, was he a top 10 QB for the entire 2023 season. We didn’t have the greatest of season, many things went wrong, we didn’t play up to our potential, we didn’t seize the moment many times, there are many things that we did late that we can build upon, and that’s fine, but you have to be willing to accept reality. DC4 would even admit that he didn’t play 2023 as a top 10 QB. Plus the fact that we are having this discussion is proof that he wasn’t. Any top bonafide 10 QB does not need verification that they were. So, once again, I challenge anyone to show me a ranking that had/has DC4 in the top 10.

Mahomes wasn't that good this season. I don't know what games you were watching...lol
Mahomes had a down year due to his own standards. He was good enough to get his team to the Super Bowl. It’s the goal of every team and QB. He is playing for the ultimate prize and we are here arguing if DC4 is a top 10 QB…….SMDH
His worst season is a career year for most QBs. Dude is a 2 time champion and people are already talking about him being the GOAT if he wins this Super Bowl. His name should be not mentioned at all in this thread bc he has done what every other QB desires to do.

Mahomes was good his receivers couldn't catch or line up right
Funny that nobody blamed the receivers when Alex Smith was having the same issues with his receivers. Mahomes drop rate this season is about the average for Alex Smith from 2013-2016, and that's with Smith having less "bad throws." LOL. But again, another topic for another day.

Not a knock but sometimes, you gotta know who is driving and who is along for the ride.

*those 2000 Ravens...SMH. Allow 2TDs the entire playoffs....TWO*

And I don't adhere to that GOAT talk. It would interested to see what he does without Big Red and Kelce. I'll let his career finish out before I place him anywhere.

You're comparing apples and oranges. And a lot of the time is not the amount of drops but when they happen. See Chris Olave

The last two games he was top 10..
about 10 games he was bottom 5
5 games he was top 15

The most important thing for 2024 is improving our ability to score in the red zone.

When I go back to TC 2023... a handful of players showed up...

Marshon Lattimore showed up every day and chose violence...

the culture needs to change because after Sean left.. that culture died.. the team just went from "Payton use to hound us every day about every little tiny thing".. and now its ... "maybe I can wing it"

The last 6 games DC has the 2nd best QBR in the league, They were also in that time one of the best RZ teams

Respectfully, you’re reaching. Stats don’t lie but I’ll take a shot at arguing subjectively.

Lawrence is two years away from competing for a starting job. Rodgers is on the decline. Dak is a choke artist. Goff is a choke artist. Stafford is brittle. Love is a choke artist. Hurts is a choke artist. Cousins is a choke artist. Jackson is a choke artist. Tua is a choke artist. Mayfield, you guessed it, a choke artist.

Your list of players you place above and on par with Carr is trash. Respectfully.
The fact you can list that group of players as "trash" while hyping up Derek fricking Carr is the definition of irony.

Carr is a career loser, who put up average stats on a historically easy schedule. He's never won anything of note and our own players don't seem to like the guy. He was getting booed in the Dome, not even halfway thru his first season here. And rightfully so.

If we couldn't win the South this year with Carr, we'll never win anything with him. This was as easy as the division and schedule are ever going to be and we blew it with him leading the way.

Let's look at who we played those last 6 games.

Vs Detroit (33-28 Loss)
Carr was 17-22 226 yards 1 TD, 1 INT

Vs Carolina (28-6 Win)
Carr was 18-26 119 yards 2 TDs, 1 INT

Vs NYG( 24-6 Win)
Carr was 23-28 218 yards 3 TD

Vs LA Rams (30-22 Loss)
Carr was 27-40 319 yards 3 TDs, 1 INT

Vs Bucs (23-13 Win)
Carr was 24-32 197 yards 2 TDs

Vs Falcons (48-17 Win)
Carr was 22-28 264 yards 4 TDs

So looking at the numbers and seeing who they were against really paints a more accurate picture than everyone just repeating the line that he was a top 5 QB for the last 6 games.

Was he better? Sure. But we were also playing the easiest remaining SOS for those final 6 games. Link

After they play the Lions in Week 13, they face the two worst teams in the NFL in back-to-back weeks (Giants and Panthers) before closing the season with three teams fighting for playoff spots but that rank #20 or worse (Rams, Bucs, Falcons).

On the season, the Saints are 4-1 vs. bottom-10 teams and are 1-5 vs. teams ranking outside the bottom-10 teams.

And we aren’t even talking about elite teams. The Saints have played the NFL’s #4 easiest schedule so far this year. They’ve played just one top-10 team this year (and lost).

The Saints should notch a couple more wins through Week 15 but then must use that springboard to a winning streak vs. more competitive teams to close the season or Derek Carr will once again find himself on his couch watching the playoffs.

And that would mean 10 years in the NFL for Carr without a single playoff win to his name.

Context matters. Derek Carr didn't just start playing better, the teams he was facing, later in the year, were bottle of the league. Do I hope he can build on that and look improved next season? Ofcourse. Do I see any reason to be optimistic for that outcome? Hell no.

Derek Carr is who he is and sadly, he fits this team like a glove, for where it is today. Hopefully we won't be stuck in this place for long.

So based on @TruSaint ’s graphic, we’re selling Carr short. He has a legitimate argument for best QB play in the league. That’s crazy. We should build a float making fun of how terrible we think he is.
