Speculation Despite Bad Stretch of Games, Sam Darnold's Market is Still North of $30M Per Year, According to James Palmer (38 Viewers)

Darnold turned out to be who we thought he was—a guy who freezes in the pocket and doesn’t pull the trigger when he’s got open receivers and who hears footsteps and creates too many negative plays. Not a true NFL starter.

Darnold hurt himself the last two weeks sure but it’s not like McCarthy is set in stone as the starter.

The Vikes would be wise to wait and see what develops before doing anything. There is no guarantee JJ pans out, is fully healthy etc.

Not sure how it works in Darnold’s situation being a pending FA but if possible one would think that the Vikes could franchise tag him.

Not ideal for tagging a QB due to cost but one they could explore if need be (and possible to do.)

Pat on Moving the Chains suggested a contract offer in the range of two years, $50m, with incentives if he can continue to produce and keep the starting job. I think that's about right.

I could see that. Will be interesting to see what he thinks his value will be on the market.

Darnold is in odd spot, this really only his first good year of production and slumped at the end.

The flip of this the league doesn’t have enough quality starters for all 32 teams as it is. This means the mid level starters like him (Carr is another) will get looks and dollars if for no other reason than there are worse alternatives.

That shouldn’t be confused with anything other than what he and others are: starters only because the team doesn’t have a better alternative. The Vikes were planning on him being the starter, it was more of a happy accident he played as well as he did.

He may be in the $30 million range but with Jefferson, Addison, Hockenson and Jones, I'd be worth $30 million throwing to them.

He had an incredible supporting cast to elevate his play. I always go back to Joe Flacco with the Ravens. He was a Super Bowl winning quarterback...........with Anquan Boldin. No Boldin, not that great.

It's funny but that's the market for a bridge QB.
The reality is there are only one true elite QB in the NFL. Then there are a handful of great QBs, who can be considered franchise QBs. Everyone else is just running up the rear and can be replaced

The Vikings can sign Daniel Jones to a similar contract that they signed Darnold to as insurance for JJ.

Let Darnold walk, and Jones and JJ compete is how the Vikings will roll imo.

Jones is much better than a lot of people give him credit for, and he can be signed for cheap. The current Viking roster would be the best roster he's played with in the NFL.

The Vikes are at 70 million in free space to start and could resign him if they want to.

Jones is an unknown quantity with the Vikes but his body of work with the Giants is hit and miss. Just because he would be cheaper doesn’t mean it’s the right move.

Darnold clearly clicked with his team this year. The right move might be to sign him to a contract with what is being talked about.

You sound like Nick Wright—Mahomes and everyone else. I think there are at least 10 QBs that I consider elite and have HOF potential.

Darnold was an unknown quantity with the Vikes last year. He was meant to be the back up.

If I was the coach or GM, I would let Darnold walk, take the following year comp pick.

Sign Jones to a small contract and see what happens with McCarthy. Invest the other money into big needs in FA and use the draft for BPA picks or accumulate picks in later drafts.

You have a 1st round QB on a rookie deal ,another former 1st round on a " prove it " deal for backup. This past season success allows you some free time to see what they can do. Sure there will be a lot of fans who will be upset you let Darnold. However, if Mccarthy pans out , you won't have to worry about a significant salary hit for a couple more years.

Take advantage and shore up a defense to face the Lions, Packers twice a year. Get another stud WR opposite Jefferson or runningback to help out young QB
