Expect the Saints to show interest in Chiefs OC Matt Nagy for HC per Dianna Russini (1 Viewer)

Bill Belichick was on some show a week or so ago, and they asked him about rebuilds, and the timeline it takes to take a team from the dumpster into the building.

He pointed out the Broncos under Sean, and how the right hire was able to overcome the >$40M dead cap that was left over when the team moved on from Russ Wilson. The Broncos under Sean are in year 2 of marriage and their rebuild is ahead of schedule.

The right staff that can create a winning culture isn’t the easiest thing to find, but if fans see someone with skins on the wall, they will give that staff time. Fans had DA on a short leash because he was a known commodity. Fan expectations were justified.

The majority of fans realize that our roster next year will have a lot of holes, and will be operating behind the 8 ball due to our salary cap problems. Starting the interview process with rumors of Matt Nagy would not instill confidence in the fan base, and only signal that we are more lost in the desert than we are close to finding the next Sean.

I guess that depends on how you define exciting. I have never thought of what Vrable did as exciting football. It was winning football for quite awhile, but I wouldn't call it exciting. I tend to think that in order for a rebuild to be exciting, you need a young exciting QB.

I do very much like the idea of switching to a 3-4 defense regardless of if it's Vrable or not. I think it would work better against the current NFL offenses and offers some advantages in the draft. But, it's going to take some time to rebuild the defense whether it's a 3-4 or 4-3. Basically the entire DL needs to be rebuilt for a 4-3 and we don't really have anyone to play OLB in the 3-4. Foskey might actually be a fit at OLB in the 3-4 but you obviously can't count on him for anything. That being said, we don't have the players for either scheme right now so now would be a good time to switch and I think the 3-4 allows you to take better advantage of value in the draft. Most teams are playing 4-3 so guys who are only fits for the 3-4 tend to fall ruther in the draft.

Anyway, in the end, I don't really care what style they play as long as they win.

I consider winning exciting football. Sure, dropping 40 burgers every week with a high flying passing attack might be more exciting, but bullying a team 21-0 through a punishing rushing attack with mixed in shot plays and a suffocating defense can be just as exciting and both are still Ws. Defense and running the ball wins in Nov through the playoffs and it travels.

They saying is run a 4-3, if you can get the big guys for the line. That tells me, it's easier to field a 3-4 now. I think we have more pieces in place to run a 3-4 than people think. Bresee and Turner can both play DE in a 3-4, Ridgeway might be able to play NT, especially if he gets stronger in the lower body. If not, then let him play DE as well rotating with Bresee or playing opposite should be want to go big. Foskey is probably more of a OLB in a 3-4, looking back at his draft profile, it's just as good if not better than a lot of the guys coming out this season and he's already on the roster. We know that DA and Grantham failed many players on the defense, he could be one of them. Any way we look at it, we need new talent across the board, but this team is not void of young talent and putting in systems that can capitalize on the strengths of the talent we have the best makes sense.

I don't disagree that winning football is exciting football. I'm just saying that no matter who the HC is, barring a miracle like Payton pulled in 2006, we are at best looking at a team hovering around .500 next year and mostly likely think I am overly optimistic with that.

And, yes, I do think we have some pieces for 3-4. But we do still need the pass rushers whether they are 4-3 DEs or 3-4 OLBs. Foskey may be an option, but you obviously can't count on him and Payton Turner is a free agent at the end of this year. Anyway, I do think it's now easier to draft for a 3-4 and you can get better value. For instance, if Abdul Carter somehow drops to #10, he would pretty much so be ideal as a 3-4 OLB where as I think he's probably light to play DE in the 4-3. There are lots of those tweeners that you can draft later because they are better fits for the 3-4.

I wasn't tracking that Turner is a FA, good. He can re-sign for cheap or sign somewhere else perform well and hopefully net us a comp pick.

Mike Green is someone to watch in the draft as a 3-4 OLB as is Jihad Campbell. With my above scenario, I'd go Jeanty at 10 as I doubt Carter will be there and then Campbell or Green in the 2nd.

Nagy?

I’m not saying we shouldn’t interview as many head coaching options as possible, but let’s be practical here.

When Brennan’s is looking to hire a new head chef, they aren’t bringing Jeffrey Dahmer in for an interview (despite the fact that he knew how to cook rare meals).
