Fix Netflix (2 Viewers)

If people can whine about threads getting too political, can I whine when they get too financial?
There is no bigger turn off for me than that blather

You started the thread about fixing Netflix, and the only reason why you did, was because Netflix is in the news, and Netflix is in the news because their stock went down. Finances are are integral part of the topic.

seen some news about netflix about to crack down on password sharing.
I know it has been rumored for a few years, but now they seem serious about it:

Netflix estimates that about 100 million households worldwide — or roughly one out of every three households using its service — are streaming for free. “We’ve just got to get paid at some degree for them,” co-CEO Reed Hastings said during a shareholder call Tuesday.

Netflix has already been experimenting in Latin America with programs that use a soft touch to convince the unsubscribed to sign up. In Costa Rica, for instance, Netflix plan prices range from $9 to $15 a month, but subscribers can create sub-accounts for two other individuals outside their household for $3 a month. On Tuesday, Hastings suggested that the company may adopt something similar in other markets.

We started Netflix when it was just DVD, no streaming yet. We got it when we had kids and realized that the few times we got to the theater was always for kids movies. At least all of the theatrical movies we missed could be watched at home on DVD.

Then streaming took over, and even the titles Netflix couldn't stream would always be on DVD a few months later.

Now I cancelled my DVD portion because there are no worthwhile theatrical releases to get at all.

personally, i think the ad supported version is good, as long as its the same library as the premium tier.
But Tubi, Crackle, FreeVee(formally IMDB TV), Xumo, Roku and a few others all use that model, but they are free. So it'll be intersting to see if it takes off.
I don't understand the fuss over them cracking down on password sharing, I get it. I honestly don't see how you can complain if they charge a little extra for sharing accounts. I hear about people who share their passwords and charge the ones who use it. Sharing with family is one thing, but if you are sharing with 3 or 4 other people who are just friends, then c'mon, it was good while it lasted, but thats the reason we can't have nice things...

Bc they password sharing issue is not why they’re slipping
It’s just some corporate bs to distract from the actual issues

A few years ago they were actively promoting password sharing on social media. Password sharing was a common thing all through their spectacular growth. They're doing the typical corporate thing of ignoring the actual problem and creating a strawman so it seems they're actually doing something.

I mean, their issue is that they are not making money so their stock is dropping. So, to them, that is part of the issue. It's a lot of money they lose that they have chosen to be "cool about" for many years. But, it does violate their ToS and lots of other companies enforce it more strictly. Frankly, I think their model of just charging a small fee if you want to share the password is reasonable.
