You can say whatever you want about our arch rivals in Atlanta, but their decision to play Penix now is brilliant. True, the money spent on the lame duck Cousins is crippling, but they simply had to go out and get a starting caliber quarterback at the time they did.

But the Falcons always knew that Kirk wasn’t the answer. They were looking to the future. Their plan was to have a teachable kid with some raw football skills to eventually take the reins and start building around him. Yes, Cousins wasn’t happy with that draft pick, but the Falcons simply refused to die under the worn out wheels of a has-been, ineffective quarterback.

So what do they have now? They have a young QB who has had some time to work with his players and has some confidence once he got the official call as the new starter. He is perfectly healthy going into the home stretch of the season. And they also have a fairly decent emergency QB if for any reason reason something unforeseen happens to Penix.

Now that they have the division lead, it seems that everything has fallen into place for them to have a chance at some real success going into the playoffs. They had a plan that is working. We did not… and now we’re starting all over again.

I’ll be hoping for the worse for the Falcons from here on out. But they sure made some good decisions. 😢

How did all you guys miss the line I wrote about how crippling the money spent on Cousins was? My OP post isn't about the mismanagement of their salary cap. SMH :jpshakehead:

It's about having a healthy and prepared young QB ready to take at the most important time of the year in the NFL.

You touched on something that is very important. You referenced Penix as teachable, which is 100% correct. What 99% of this board doesn’t know, is that Kirk is the type of QB, that is the type of QB that you WANT to mentor your young QB. I read something awhile back, about the Shanahan coaching tree that is currently in the NFL today. All of those coaches specifically say Kirk Cousins’ name, when they talk about the almost perfect QB. It’s not bc they feel like his talents are vastly superior to anyone else’s obviously. They all said that Kirk (specifically) does exactly what they ask him to do at all times. He executes their vision and commands, better than any other QB they have worked with.
So, while many think sinking $100 million was a bad investment, the Falcons paid handsomely to guarantee themselves that they were getting the perfect QB to mentor a potential 1st rd draft pick. If they didn’t draft a player in the 1st, then they still had a viable veteran QB. And that is what no one seems to understand. To them it wasn’t a waste of money, it was just a very rich investment for their future, and/or future investment on the young QB.
If literally could be a brilliant strategy for them, if they somehow become the top of the NFC South in the immediate future

Right after they gave cousins that money. They just assumed that “ hey, we’re the falcons and we probably made a mistake, so we better draft a qb right away”.

can't plan for the littany of injuries we had. My hope was alwaya that Rattler would have the ability to wait and develop for at least a year. I don't see where what we did was anything different from them other than they had a higher draft pick to access one of the top tier QB's.

I went back and looked at the full Falcons game. I thought Penix was poised, a bit statuesque, and yet delivers a nice ball. His ball location is better than Rattler's and his height helps him to see/have more clear throwing lanes.

Giving Cousins that much money instead of Lamar Jackson when they had the chance was indeed a very, very bad decision. However, I give them props for moving on instead of doubling down on a bad decision. The Saints are currently the type of team to double down on a bad decision. At least that what it appeared like until the owner got involved. I'm hopeful the front office has had a wake up call.
