Galloway eager to face Saints man to man coverage.... (2 Viewers)

I don't understand why everyone rags on our corners so much. They are ranked 9th against the pass this year, 14th last year, 12th in 2004 and 8th in 2003. These are the same corners that are playing man defense. I think that is pretty damn good. I know we don't have much depth and Craft can look like a rented mule at times but come on. Everyone wants to talk about how bad they were against the Ravens because they gave up 159 yards passing. I don't know if you guys realize it or not but 159 yards per game would rank #1 in the NFL if the season ended today. Somehow that performance gets the blame and our "great, can't stop us" offense turns the ball over 5 times and get worshipped for lighting it up when they were down 28 points late in the 2nd half.

We could always trade for Chris MCallister since he is a shut down corner, will make the Pro Bowl and he gave up more yards Sunday than our entire team. How about we go after Deltha O'Neal and Tory James since they get a lot of interceptions and made the Pro Bowl last year. Just so happens they both also play for the Bengals who had the 26th ranked passing defense last year.

I think our corners have played well. I also think that we need to get younger and deeper at the position. I would love to see them get more interceptions but not if it means they are giving up huge plays by gambling. I would love to see them play more of the confusing zone schemes but then defenses would run all over us like they did in 2003-2004.

those stats are like that because during those years....teams kept running the ball and got success outta of it.

I was just joking but apparently hit a nerve :)

I actually think McKenzie has played waaayy better than people think. He gets burned from time to time which would be okay if he would mix in a few big plays. But he hasn't... hence the "he stinks" attitude of the fans.

Thomas is an average possible second stringer. Period.

we should adopt more of a zone and cover 2 defense and do our blitzes from our zone defense, that man to man defense just dont really work anymore not with slants and pick plays etc. atleast zone man defense so the players is always covered depending were in the zone he is.

Exile, I wasn't referring to you. I have just been seeing a lot of bashing the last week.

Meily, I agree we should do a little more blitzing out of our zone defense but it is very easy to recognize the difference between man coverage and zone coverage presnap. This means we would be tipping our hand if we blitz everytime we ran zone coverages, also the zone coverage is much less effective out of a cover 2 because you would have huge holes with only 3-4 guys dropping into the zone and would leave a huge void over the middle. If we run too much zone we will get it run down our throat, if we run too much man we will get killed on Slants, deep outs and pick plays all day.

A good MLB cures all of these problems because we wouldn't have to keep 8 guys in the box to stop the run.

i hope we do something to contain galloway though...

that guy ALWAYS torches us or hurts us in some way.

Teams have done an effective job on Galloway the past couple of weeks. They are using the 0 coverage. What you have to do is stand across from him at the line and when the Bucs snap the ball let Galloway run his route uncovered and Gradkowski will hit him in stride and Galloway will drop it.

The reason we are 9th in passing defense is that they never get burnt, they just allow the WR to catch the ball for a 1st down THEN tackle him.

That tactic has won us 5 games not to bad!
As long as they can keep them in front of them and not chasing them.

Great post. Unfortunately all the haters will ignore it and wait for a CB to get burned once to say "Cornerback X sucks!"

I like MM and Freddie T a lot, it's Craft that worries me. I'm still a fan of getting a young cornerback or two in the system since Freddie is getting old and we can use better nickel and dime cornerbacks.

Yeah we are ranked 9th against the pass, but what kind of irks me is we always seem to play down to our competition:

- Brett Farve played horribly his first game and the next game against us throws 300+ yards and 3 TDs
- Bruce Gradowski, a rookie startinghsi first game, had the best game of the year against us, throwing 270+ yards and 2 TDs
- Steve McNair was playing horribly all year and comes into the Dome and has the game of the year, completing 70% of his passes, and throwing around 200 yards and 2TDs in the first half alone, with no picks. They abandoned the run by the thrid since they were way ahead but he probably could have put over 350+ on us if he wanted.

Its like we're some magic elixer for struggling quarterbacks. I know you can only do so much in a year if you can't make all the necessary personnel changes, but thats how it was in the Haslett years and I'm tired of it.

I know our secondary had decent games against McNabb and Delhomme, two of the better passing attacks in the league, so why can't we handle the guys we should be able to handle?

We are not the first team Farve has lit up and we wont be the last. The guy can still wing it. McNair had below his season average in yards and Bruce Gradkowski was starting his first game against us. Plus he only completed 9 passes to his WR's, the other 11 went to the TE and RB's so our corners can't be blamed for that.
