Giant Movies That You Never Hear About Anymore (2 Viewers)

This may sound like a quirky, odd question but do you think it’s fair to still consider Maryland “a Southern state” in terms of its regional attitudes, perspectives, maybe not so much political because Md. is a safe blue Democratic state but in terms of its history and any lingering sentiments?

I know Baltimore had some of the worst anti-Union riots early on at the beginning of the Civil War and the state probably would’ve seceded if Lincoln hadn’t arrested pro-Confederate lawmakers and kept them under house arrest for the entirety of the war as well as Baltimore and Maryland was not allowed habeus corpus and the area remained essentially in a semi-martial law state until conflict’s end.

I also know Maryland was a hotbed of Confederate supporters, sympathizers and there were several poorly-conceived plots to kill President Lincoln in the Md. countryside that failed abysmally. The woman who owned the boarding house where Wilks conspiracy plots took shape in Washington D.C. was from Maryland and was a Confederate sympathizer who met clandestinely with like-minded individuals, including Dr. Mudd, the now-infamous rural Md surgeon who worked to try to splinter Booth’s broken leg after jumping down an entire floor of steps and landing awkwardly on the theatre stage at Ford’s Theater, supposedly yelling “Sic Semper Tyrannicus”—thus be the fate of all tyrants in Latin and also Virginia’s state motto.
Interestingly, Maryland isn't as blue as you might think. While trying not to get political, the city of Baltimore still leans heavily blue, and since that's where the largest percentage of the population is in Maryland, the state remains blue. However, the county I live in is about 2/3 red to 1/3 blue, and neighboring counties are very similar. They just don't have the population to influence the overall state's vote due to having a lower population.

As far as regional attitudes and perspectives, it took me a few years to get used to life here. It's definitely not as friendly as the South, but it's also not as abrupt as the North (generally speaking, of course). There's an influence of both in the area, and once I got used to it, I like living here.

The four headliners were all a HUGE deal at the time. Its pretty shocking how irrelevant all of them are now.

Also, Cruel Intentions (half of the same cast)

Disagree ...it’s a decent teen slasher film if you’re into that sort of thing. I’ve seen it shown on cable as a sort of late night guilty pleasure

Though honestly I was disappointed in the ending ... I wanted some twist like the killer being a manifestation of Sarah Michelle Gellers own guilty subconscience..

Yeah, Maryland from a geographical standpoint, is kind of an elongated state. Essentially, a country, nation, or states or territories in Canada that have unusual shapes, sizes, or established topographical features, for example Chile, Belgium or Holland have unique geographical, natural features that factor into the country’s topographical shape. I know Md. state size and overall square territory miles is equivalent to Belgium.

I was born in Baltimore, but my father moved us to the eastern shore when I was 14. If you think the cultures are different now, you should have been here in 1974. The eastern shore is historically much more red, as is the western portion of the state. The I-95 corridor with the heaviest population is very Blue. The people here tend to be friendlier overall perhaps than on the western shore, but less tolerant of "come-here's"

Maryland is a cool state with an interesting cultural mix of city and rural. If you live in Baltimore you're 2 hours from the beach or 1-2 hours from snow skiing. There are many of museums in and around Baltimore like the Walter Art Gallery and the B&O Railroad Museum. @zatsnzapps we need to get together for a few cold ones if you're down this way, or I make it to Catonsville to visit relatives :)

Odd fact-Baltimore's Federal Hill, which is near the inner harbor, is so-named because during the Civil War the Union placed guns on the hill. These guns were not to defend Baltimore's harbor, but instead the guns were aimed toward the city to thwart any rebellion by Confederate sympathizers.

Never pay any attention to @zeetes impressions of Maryland. He has no idea how to get off the I-95 corridor :hihi:

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves has been on recently

I forgot how much I liked it

It was huge at the time, second highest grossing movie of 1991 only behind Terminator 2

I was actually thinking about giving it a rewatch. Haven't seen it in forever.

I want to say the soundtrack was good, but I can't remember, lol.

Saving Private Ryan...

FWIW, never got all the hype around it. The opening was incredibly powerful though. I felt Band of Brothers was better overall by a significant margin.

FWIW, my father was a WWII vet, he didn't land at Normandy, he landed about a month later at Omaha beach. He tended not to watch WWII movies but he had a reason to watch this one (he had been interviewed by the T-P and folks that worked on the film). He did say the actual battle scenes were the most realistic he had seen to date. Man, I miss him.....

Kevin Costner not even trying to do an accent was most of what I remember from that. And Sean Connery showing up at the end out of nowhere.

I love the opening credit score

Speaking of Costner and accents- Have any of yall ever seen a movie called Thirteen Days? Holy Christ, Costner’s Boston accent was absolutely atrocious.. like, I’m no expert on Boston accents, but just watch the first 2 or 3 scenes he’s in, i have never seen anything like it.. i mean, he makes Quaid’s NOLA accent in Big Easy, and Cruise’s Irish “brogue” in Far and Away seem like they are dead -on perfect... I coulnt tell you how good or bad Thirteen Days is as a movie, since i literally had to turn it off about a third of the way in due to Costner’s butchering of the accent.. and i actually think he’s a decent actor, i like a lot of his work.. but wow, if he has any self-awareness whatsoever , he must cringe when he’s reminded of this role.
