Giants and Saints still talking? (1 Viewer)

Some of you guys seem to think our Offense is top notch amazing and all we need is a good Defense. Our offense is not perfect, we could certainly use Shockey's help to actually SCORE more points. That will help with Defensive problems as well. Shockey is an established Offensive Star. Some second round rookie may or may not effect our Defense at all.

when do you have a better feeling for reaching the Super Bowl ?

with a Offense ranked #1 and a defense ranked #29
or a offense maybe ranked #5-7 and defense ranked #10-12 ?

for my own , i know the answer , but thats just me

I never said they didn't. But even if they hadn't had a good defense, I think that offense would have still taken them to the playoffs.

with a defense like we have ? i doubt it

2001 - Reggie Wayne Wide Receiver Miami (FL)
2002 - Dwight Freeney Defensive End Syracuse
2003 - Dallas Clark Tight End Iowa
2004 - No First Round Pick
2005 - Marlin Jackson Cornerback Michigan
2006 - Joseph Addai Running back LSU
2007 - Anthony Gonzalez Wide receiver Ohio State

Since 2001 the Colts have taken 4 Offense and 2 Defense when it comes to First Rounders. Seems to have worked well for them. During all these years their Defense was considered their weak spot and their Offense was their strength. If Offense is your strength you darn well better be sure you can KEEP it strong. I am not saying we shouldn't work on our Defense but we better keep adding to our offense or we will really have no chance.

two things : the draft goes 7 rounds and the last two years the defense brought struggling offense through the playoffs ( one time to the Super Bowl ) ... they are really effective the last couple of years sending a quick turnover heavy defense to the race.

The Patriots offense averaged 36.8 points per game during the regular season last year. Our defense gave up 24.2 points per game. I didn't say they would go 16-0 and it's certainly not the most desirable situation to have your defense giving up a lot of points, but they still would more than likely have made the playoffs.

.

So you're saying by not acquiring shockey our D goes from bottom of the league to 5-7?..what player are we going to get to make that happen???? a second round draft pick will do all this?????

The Saints suck at 2nd round and beyond picks so why not go with a proven commodity.

I would actually rather keep the pick and use it to move up in the 1st round to get Dorsey or Ellis, but if they go high then lets get Shockey and a defender in teh 1st.

Shockey can help our defense as much as some second round player could, in my opinion. If we were to get Keith Rivers/ Sed Ellis in the first, and use our second to get Shockey, have we not significantly improved our team??? Besides, Shockey can take this offense from pretty good to elite. The Pats greatness this year was due to their OFFENSE, not their D. Their O put up so many points that all their D had to do was sit back in coverage and let the game come to them. If we are that close to being elite on offense, why are so many just satisfied with our offense being good enough? That really irks me to read that kind of stuff. The Colts and Pats certainly could take the "good enough" approach, but they don't. They don't rest on their laurels.

Saints aren't "good enough" at anything until they win a Super Bowl.

GoldRush, I couldn't agree more. I am all for getting Shockey (but no more than a 2nd rd pick), AND I would LOVE to get Chad Johnson. Id go by my Saints Chad jersey in a heartbeat! Think of a healthy Deuce, Pierre, Bush, Stecker, Brees, Colston, Miller, Johnson, Meachem, and then add BOTH Shockey and Johnson?! I'd think NFL defenses would be in fear and our Super Bowl odds go WAyyyy up at that point. And that, would be even if we only got part-time starters for the defense out of this draft.

Shockey as a Saint would be what Witten is for the Cowboys. Whether you like him or not, he would complete this offense and will help Bush out in the run game and the open field.

I am for the Shockey trade assuming we do not give up more than a second round pick and a marginal player. I like the possibility of another viable target being on the field that could draw additional coverage. I like the fact that he is a good blocking tight end. I think the change of scenery would do him well. There is no one that I can think of in the second round that would be as intriguing to see playing for the Saints and that could be as big a benefit to the team. And for those worried about him be tempted by the vices in NO It’s not like those vices did not exist in NY.

but does anyone just find shockey irritating as hell?

As far as I can see, we know 2 things:

1. Shockey is available. The Giants asked us for a 2 and Harper, we said no.
2. Of all the people who frequent this board, all the Giants fans, everyone who has an opinion about Shockey, the person who has probably THE best feel about the man happens to be a member of the Saints already.. and he also happens to be the one in charge: Coach Payton! And Shockey adores him! For once, this will be an easy decision.. it's whatever Payton wants done.
