Head Coaching Candidates for 2025 (2 Viewers)

I don't see the Saints as being a very attractive organization for an established coach. We are in cap hell, probably for a few more years thanks to Loomis' "magic" and the Saints have a problem with holding people accountable, otherwise DA would have been shown the door at the end of last season.

The Commanders added a 4 time Pro Bowler and fleeced the Saints on Lattimore. The Chiefs always seem to find a way to bring in good players, while the Saints sign practice squad players. Except for Shaheed they haven't hit gold on any draft picks or free agent acquisitions since the 20017 draft.

I know we haven't seen an entire season with him, but what Liam Coen is doing with the Bucs offense is incredible. They are still a top 5 offense despite the injuries they have had. I typically would be hesitant to hire someone after only one good year, but I would not be entirely opposed to looking into him when the season is done.

Yep. I think he should be on the list. And he's a guy we wanted for OC a couple years ago. I think he has a chance to be this year's Kevin O'Connell.

Our cap situation will hamper our ability to get a high quality in demand coach. It seems we're relegated to the lesser teir young coaches. OR a great retreads w/ baggage. Which is like, you finally land a super hot girl, but then you learn she has 7 pet boa constrictors

I don't think it's that bad. It gets pretty clear in 2026. And really clear in 2027. There are only 32 of these jobs and we have good ownership. If you have your heart set on Ben Johnson or Mike Vrabel you may be disappointed. But we can get a good coach. And the guy we hire could be better than those guys.

I'm truly interested in seeing what Rizzi can do in his audition, as well as Joe Woods. If he wins just double the games Allen did, keep him.
The problem here is that fans want what they consider to be a 'proven' commodity. They want to believe that the new head man already knows all the nuances of the job and will understand how best to fix the problems that exist and can even improve on what may be working. But this doesn't always happen. But Rizzi is the unknown. The unknown is scary because getting a new head coach is also a time commitment. Time wasted on a new regime that doesn't get results just sets you back at least 3 years from getting to start the process all over again.

But we really don't know what will happen with any knowledgeable football coach taking the reins. Even a guy like Belichick may be a failure if the right pieces doesn't come together. It's understandable why a guy like Rizzi may not get serious consideration for the job, because no one has given him a chance to build that resume' yet.
No one knows what kind of head coach he could be. But these coming 8 games is his chance to give us all a clue.

So no one's willing to give Rizzi a chance?

One thing about offensive-defensive minded coaches, since Bill Belichick comes up a lot on this thread... Bill Belichick was a DC.

So you think if he goes 4-4....Beats say the Browns, Giants, Raiders...and one more....You'd just hand him the job and a 4 year contract?

He is getting a chance. This is it right now. I personally think we need a total change. We've already gone through three years with one of Payton's guys. I don't want to do it again.

Yeah, not to keep the "continuity" thing going...but I'm really like Rizzi so far. If he makes noise in the 2nd half of the season, I'd be completely fine with giving him a shot.

I really want new blood to come in with no preconceived notions and take a fresh look at everything the organization does.

But, I'm willing to give Rizzi a chance and he is going to get that chance in the next 8 games. I tend to think he needs to just blow it out and win 6 of 8 to get the job, but if the team is playing well and we see a return to attention to detail, it could sway me to think he should get the job regardless of the actual record given that we have no WRs.

Then again, outside of the WRs, this team is mostly healthy at this point so he should be able to do much better than DA if he is the right guy for the job.

Nah, I was prob lowballing because the bar is low. I agree w/ a previous poster in 6 wins or more being a more realistic # Hell I'd argue a 4 game streak would be enough to sell me. Haven't seen one of those since 2020

From Loomis back in ‘06 talking about hiring Payton:

"Every day after the day we hired him, he does something to affirm that it was the right decision," Loomis said.

Here’s to the team finding that kind of guy again.

Saints are just as attractive as an organization as what they have always been previously in our history. Hiring of ditka, haslett, Payton post Katrina and Dennis. If anything we might be slightly more attractive than seasons of past. Bad cap for a year or two isn’t horrible but we do have strong pieces and core.
