How would you feel about drones flying around, checking things out?

How is this different from cops driving around, checking things out?

There's just a greater chance for abuse. Some nameless desk jockey flying a drone around that people may or may not see...

It goes back to how much power you are willing to give to the state to ensure your safety. And how much abuse of that power you're willing to tolerate.

OK, but then how is different from police helicopters flying around, checking things out? I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but this has been going on for years. So I don't understand the current outrage.

Well, for one I'm not seeing all that much outrage... merely questioning if this is something we want.

Also, it's just a matter of degree. This is another tool for the state to use -- and that can have good and bad implications. On a practical matter, someone operating a joystick removed from the situation is likely to feel more detached from their actions - so I think that's one area this can be abused.

It's like security cameras on every corner. It can be amazingly practical and very useful for everyone -- it can also be a tool the state can use to start tracking people it deems "dangerous", or "undesirable", etc. It isn't that people think it's likely to start right away, but it isn't that irrational to feel uneasy with a state that can literally see everything.

Come on it's not like this is still the Bush Administration, you can trust our feds and police now...

No, thanks.

I feel the same now as I did when ChimpCo was in charge. Once you give the position the power, the next guy to fill that seat you might not like so much. But he'll still have the power you gave to the guy you did like.

I see your point. Imagine what East Germany would have done with today's technology.

Let me see if I can figure this out.

Nellis Air Force Base is near to Las Vegas.

Many of the USAF drones are controlled from Nellis AFB and training excercises are always needed.

The Venus Pool at Caesers Palace in Las Vegas is topless

Hell, they aren't worried about any of us. They are making sure that there aren't any terrorists over at the Venus Pool. :9:

I'm not trading anything! They're not spyplanes. And again, if you accuse every technology that COULD possibly be used that way of being not worth it, then we'd have to take down all the satellites, airplanes, and the cops can't use helicopters anymore.

I'd be for taking the cops' helicopters away. Even up the odds a little bit. It would make World's Wildest Police Chases a little more exciting to watch if, once in a while, they could escape without the whirly-bird cheat code preying from above.
