I want no part of Aaron Glenn as a HC (2 Viewers)

Lions injuries 2024: Players on injured reserve

*Indicates expected to be out for season.

It’s an excuse for Aaron Glenn but not for Dennis Allen.

Is there going to be a "I want know part Joe Brady as a HC" thread too?

No double standard here. Brady is my #1, but if Buffalo comes out and scores 3 today, Im going to think twice about Brady. As long as he doesnt lay a full egg, he is still an option.

45 is laying an egg.

Sure its 1 game. But its 1 game in the playoff pressure cooker. Much more revealing than a regular season game. If detroit lost 28-24, Id say Glenn was still an option. But 45? You do next to nothing right when you give up 45. And they couldve given up 50+. Washington demoralized the most motivated team in the NFL, because of the turstile the Lions trotted out there on defense.

Here is the problem thats developing with the excuses. People want to give Glenn the injury excuse. Well, he is going to have injuries here, so thats that. The "injury excuse" led the Lions defense to 30th against the pass, 26th in yards per play, 20th in yards, 21st in penalties and giving up 45 and being 1 and done in the playoffs.

You get the injury excuse when you are in the upper half. That means youve outcoached your talent. But to be 30th against the pass in a pass happy league and being 26th in yards per play and well into the bottom half in total yards? That just means you were the DC. It doesnt mean you did it all that well. Injuries, in and of themselves, arent a reason you should be a head coach. You have to outcoach those injuries for it to be a feather in your cap.

I started this thread to emphasize the thread I started a couple of weeks ago stating I did not want this protege of Dennis Allen as the HC. IMHO too much macho man to man esp in end of half/game situations while leading instead of strategic thinking with disguised looks.

I will defend Glenn to a degree that its easier to play man to man if you are shuffling around DBs and LBs than it is to play zone. Zone requires players knowing eachother and understanding when and how to pass off coverage. I dont blame him much for that, if its due to shuffing guys because of injury.

In his case, I wouldnt consider it macho. It was likely a necessity.

To be fair, the problem was Goff + the Lions D. That game just goes to show you can’t win the big games anymore in the NFL w/o a great QB. Nevertheless, I am a little nervous about Glenn now and not so sure he’d be the right choice.

Agreed, QBs tend to get sloppy when they have to press to try to keep up with a team running a track meet.

Underhill doing what he does best. Mickeymegaphone.

Dan Quinn had led a pathetic franchise to the SB. He won a SB in Seattle as DC. His resume is well more established to withstand 1 game than Glenn.

Glenns Defense rankings, yards

Be objective with this. Glenn in 4 years has never really been close to having an upper half defense. Compare him against Dennis Allen, and even that boat anchor deserved his shot at HC more.

2024 - 20th
2023 - 19th
2022- 32nd
2021 - 29th

Are those honestly the defensive rankings you want to see when you hire a DC as a HC? If any of you supporting Glenn for this job were given those rankings without a name, youd skip right past them.

Thats why 1 playoff game giving up 45 matters a bit more than Dan Quinn. Its a SUPER short sighted response by Underhill. Par for the course.

I was underwhelmed with Glenn when he was a position coach here and he hasn’t been a standout as the DC in Detroit.

Hiring him would feel too much like both an extenuation of the Allen era and yet a downgrade defensively.

I have said I recognize that he might possess traits and qualities that are putting attention on him as a head coaching candidate, but I have concerns about him in other areas of coaching. I’ll support him if he gets the job but he’s one of the candidates I’m least excited about. I’d prefer the team move in a new direction and hiring an Allen assistant wouldn’t feel like that at all.

I would’ve passed on Quinn because I don’t believe in hiring a DC as HC and you’re seeing why. He might lose his OC already. But Quinn is a much better DC than Glenn and he’s here because he fell arse backward into a franchise QB.
Losing an OC is overrated on this board. It’s not ideal, but it’s not the death of the offense if it happens, particularly if you have a head coach and FO with a plan. If you are changing systems every year, that’s a different kind of problem (also known as having no plan). As an example, DA had no real vision for the offense.

2022: keep the same OC for system continuity

2023: sign Carr because he allegedly fits the system better than Dalton

2024: change the system that Carr is allegedly best in because Allen’s seat is getting warm (despite finishing 5th in points and 10th in yards down the stretch after moving Peat to LT)

Even if the HC calls plays on Sunday, he isn’t doing all the work of an OC. Brees spent more time with Carmichael during the week than he did with Payton because Payton’s main job was managing the team, not sitting in the QB room all day. Payton hasn’t been able to field a top ten offense in the last three seasons coached because offensive output is more a function of talent than coaching. Better players (see Detroit) will make scoring points easier.

Both Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson have had multiple OC’s, but they are lighting up the scoreboard week after week. Nobody laments how changing OC’s has failed them.

It's still only on half of football where his offense has turned the ball over 3 times, including a pick 6. I don't even really like Glenn's defense and he's not my choice for HC, but it is an overreaction to call Glenn's defense trash based on one half of football when compared to his career as a DC.

So you are in agreement in principle; they are just using more colorful language than you.

I asked Matt Mascona if he thought that the front office would consider the fans opinion about this coaching search. He said. “Not even for a second”. I hope he’s right.
Foolish if they did.
