I'd Feel Better about the Saints if... (11 Viewers)

The Saints' obsession with finding the "prototypical DE" should go down in the annals of history right next to the Raiders' fascination with 40 times. If for nothing else, I'm happy to see Dennis Allen leave so the Saints can close the book on that idiocy.
I worry that Loomis and Ireland had a part in that too. They are still here. Hopefully it was DA.

I'm not an idiot, but I do absolutely detest the constant whining on this forum.. It's why a lot of us have not been around much the past year or two. It's as if a very significant portion of Saints fans have no clue that the NFL is a competitive business with parity as it's foundational model or that winning in the NFL is hard.

Too many want to blame the strategy that led us to 15 years of phenomenal success for not continuing when a couple of the key ingredients changed. We've got people here who are under the delusion that the salary cap and implications of years of successful strategy could just be ignored after Brees/Payton. Others are seemingly ignorant to the fact that we have been plagued by injury the past 2 years for sure.

Whatever crud you posted above wasn't too useful so I guess I'll just go back to ignoring the whining and silly takes and wait for the ebb to subside.

I think you're being a little harsh on the Chase Young contract. His contract is slotted between Bryce Huff and Dayo Odeyingbo. Huff was an absolute bust of a signing last year for the Eagles and pretty much relegated to the bench. He only has one year of playing more than 30% of the defensive snaps. Odeyingbo was signed by the Bears this year and has less of a resume than Young.

I can understand not wanting the player, but it wasn't an overpay.
Well its an overpay relative to Fowler's deal. Not sure if comparing Fowler to Young is apples to apples, but I think I would rather have Fowler than Young. Young just didn't look like a forceful player to me even though the ranking services have him fairly high in "pressures", but low to average in sack totals. And you don't know if the Saints had a shot at Fowler anyway.

15 years of "phenomenal" success is a little generous. There was one year that was phenomenal, which was before the cap strategy took root. In fairness there were a few years of above average success that were thwarted only by a no-call, a bad defensive coaching call and a bad play by a safety. I mean one could argue that the Loomis strategy held the team back more than it delivered other than those few years, especially given we had one of the greatest quarterbacks to play the game in his prime. But for the most part, it was great fun to watch and to be a fan at that time. Not to whine or complain, its just a fact which is obvious, admittedly in hindsight, that Loomis clung to the strategy 2-3 years too long and really whiffed on too many player personnel and contract decisions.

What??? Say it ain't so. I'm still looking.

To not expect whining, confusion, or concerns regarding our team is shocking. This IS a fan forum. Not every post you will agree with or like and you don’t have to bc that’s your prerogative. Personally, I welcome all opinions, even if I don’t agree with them. If the state of our team is lacking, then tell me how you really feel. It’s healthy if it’s within the forum’s guidelines

If they......

1) have a really good draft this year
2) are able to stay healthier as a team

Those are the absolute keys for me at least....

Unfortunately, right now I would feel better about the Saints if ....... Loomis retired.

I think the NFL has passed him by and it's time to get some new ideas.

I don't really understand the Loomis hate.
Zero pro bo drafts since 2019.
Multiple busts.
Absolutely horrible Eagles trade that we got fleeced on and set our franchise back several years.
Hired DA
Didn't fire PC.
Didn't fire DA.
Continue to put us in cap hell trying to compete despite the fact we don't have the talent.
Zach Baun goes from unplayable to DPOY canidate.
Chose to move up for Davenport (yikes) when we had Trey Hendrickson who has gone on to be absolute monster.
Our current roster has a severe talent issue.
Always seems to do wonders with the cap and should've been expected to have a few down years after Payton/Brees.
Correct. So why on earth does he keep forcing trying to contend?

I worry that Loomis and Ireland had a part in that too. They are still here. Hopefully it was DA.
DA gave them the prototype he wanted. Unfortunately he wanted it all, a big DE that could hold up against the run and also rush the passer. Usually second effort kind of guy that would get there if coverage held up.

Staley is more versatile and the tweener type pass rushers are back on the menu. It opens up our draft options significantly and you can still find those guys in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

In all sincerity? What do you want him to do? I was annoyed with him for his refusal to fire Dennis Allen, but that eventually got done. He's hired what looks to be a competent offensive minded head coach and they have assembled a pretty good looking staff on paper. They've also began assembling a team that's equipped to run the coaches' offensive and defensive style. We should've all expected that.

I know you had a thread of what you'd like to see the front office do this off season. Some of us tried to point out why that was unlikely given the wheel was already in motion with most of these contracts. It really didn't make sense when the cap would take care of itself with many of these contracts and the Saints would still have to sign a Carr caliber QB if he was still in New Orleans or not. He got Mathieu to take a pay cut. He got Jordan to take a pay cut. I'm assuming they'll address Taysom when he's not injured if at all.

As far as free agency goes. Juwan Johnson was a candidate to walk in my book, but the contract helps deal with dead money and its not outrageous for a player like him. The Saints offered even more money to Ward so I can only assume Adebo didn't want to be here. Theyve trued to land Kupp but thankfully didnt overpay although they were in it. So what is it that you want him to do that makes you feel this?

i don't always agree with him but he's far from a bad GM. He's not let Saquan Barkley walk in free agency bad and he's not profits over winning frustrating either. The main gripe has always been the cap this or that, but the cap hasn't prevented the Saints from being in on free agency from day 1. And much to the shock of the entire league and oddly some Saints fans, the Saints are going to enter February 2026 not in the cap hell people have long predicted.

I want him to be less arrogant and more self reflective about his failures. Instead he’s basically doubled down on most of his worst decisions and I am convinced DA would still be the HC had Gayle not stepped in. We’re running it back this year with largely the same roster after the worst season since 2015. It’s time for him to be done.

I get that. I think more changes are coming but there's many changes that just couldn't happen this year. Also, let's see how much of the roster issues was inadequate coaching. I think Allen wasted a talented roster 2 years ago and made questionable decisions to the roster as well. The roster is better than what Allen showed it to be.
