Im So Upset With Day 2 Draft Strategy (1 Viewer)

What?!?! We killed it IMO!! We got 3 top 40 players!! Vonn Bell was a huge steal!! He will do wonders for this team!! Yes me may have lost a 4th rounder, but we added the top cover safety in the draft! Huge!! Saw him mocked in the first in many of media mocks. We are killing this draft. Now we just need Westerman, McGovern, or Vadal Alexander to fall to us in the 5th which is not out of the realm of possibilities! We have hit homeruns at guard in the 5th before, so I don't doubt we can this time too!!

And coach is smart and sees we needed a bonafide starting wide receiver really bad!! We lost Colston and Watson and have replaced them both. We may be back to be a scary offense again which we were not last year IMO. The Michael Thomas pick is by far my favorite!! We have added to our defense!! We lost some to our offense, so if we wanted to stay at the top offensively we needed to replace Colston IMO. We still need a 5th receiver, so I hope we get a good UDFA or we have one at the end of the bench now.

I understand a lot of people don't like what we've done so far but I for one love it. We've drafted three players who've shown they can be productive at least in college, the exact same approach we took last year. They're not getting cute. They're not trying to out think the room. They're just drafting good ball players.

We've drafted for value and need. And not only have we addressed needs, we've addressed needs with three players who were universally recognized as being in the top 5 at their position. I can understand the questions about drafting a WR so early but to me WR is a pretty clear need. I mean, were we really about to go into the season with a 1st round pick and a few undrafted free agents? Who is our 4th WR? That's not a rhetorical question. I honestly don't know.

Agreed! The days of Drew being able to make everyone on the offense easily better is not as strong as it once was and now Drew needs better weapons around him. The idea many have that we can magically grab WR's anywhere to play and the system and Drew can make them great is a little far-fetched, we need talented WR's and Thomas seems like just that.

We addressed some real needs with some really talented players as u mentioned and sure we still have some but you can't do every single thing in one draft. I think we have done very well so far.

Come here son, sit down. Lets talk about you acting like a man from here on out.

Saints needed 3 bonafide defensive çontributors. Drafting someone like Alabama DT Reed would have given the flexiblity to move Rankins around on the line.

Keeping your third and 4th round selections would have filled your OG and WR need with quality instant contributors with someone like Vladal Alexander and any number of WR Marques Colston possession clones.

In a draft where you need immediate impact with holes to fill, the Saints and Mickey Loomis let Sean Payton have his way with his toys and the drafting of a DB leaves a lot to be desired as these {mod edit} have proven they are incapable of picking that position with the misses, misutilizations, and lack of growth, development, and scheme fit considering the resources and ROI weve had at DB under this regime.

We truly need a REAL GM who has the balls to be anything other than a Yes man for the head coach.

Bottom line, yoy can get an instant quality end or DT or LB in round 2, but you wont find that in rounds 3 and 4. What you will find in rounds 3 and 4 are immediate impact guards and receivers.

This front office is terrible at drafting, terrible at determining value with both draft picks and contract negotiations.

We are in and have been in this position perpetually and fail to look in the mirror and realize "hey, we havent had success at this position year after year, perhaps we need to hire someone that knows how to spot and develop where we keep swinging and missing.

Tom needs a moment of clarity

See ya.
Let me know which team you eventually save.

You've been perpetually upset for like the past 3 years.

We already have the players on DL to move Rankins to DE if we want on early downs. Not sure how that's even an issue. It's not like Fairley and Rankins were gonna play side by side on 1st and 10 anyway.

First, have YOU been HAPPY about the last three years??? I know I haven't. There have been some happy moments, but overall the last 3 years have been disappointing overall at best. Other words that come to mind are frustrating, upsetting, maddening, confusing ...

So, I don't think you have a leg to stand on when you infer that someone is missing something if they are upset about the last 3 years.

Second, I was upset about the 2nd day as well. The Saints biggest holes going into the draft were DL, LB, CB, G, not necessarily in that order. With the #1 passing offense in the NFL and the WORST DEFENSE IN NFL HISTORY, the one position they had absolutely no business drafting was receiver. They had to go full defense except for guard.

How much better can the offense, especially the passing offense REALLY be?? They're the BEST IN THE NFL RIGHT NOW.

So, drafting a receiver, especially TRADING UP to draft a receiver, is just another sign that Payton really can't control himself. He's still go the virus in his blood. It will never really go away.

The Saints needed someone in the middle of the DL to stop the run, AND they needed a top-flight game-changing edge rusher. At the very least, they needed another starter at linebacker ... are we going to the 3-4 OR NOT??? I don't get it. Who are the 4 starting linebackers right now?? Mystifying to me.

Then, you draft a FS, I guess to replace Byrd?? This is just an admission that Byrd was a HUGE HUGE HUGE MISTAKE.

I know it's hard to swallow, but, other than Rankins, I don't think this team improved.

Who is going to take Evans's spot at G???

Yeah, I hear Payton's reasons for taking those picks, but I don't see that those were needs that were higher than the ones I listed, which were the same ones that everyone in the country listed for the Saints ... because they were OBVIOUS to everyone. We had a hard time protecting Drew Brees consistently last season, and we must protect him more every year the older that he gets. And, we hve the worst defense in NFL history. So, let's get a WR and a S where we already have a 1st round pick and the most expensive FS in the NFL.

Just shaking my head.

I will pull for the Saints like I do every year. I hope they win 16 games and go to the Super Bowl. I hope I'm wrong about these picks and Payton is right, but Payton is far from perfect in his selections over the last 10 years, especially recently.

.

Three years ago they went 11-5 and won a road playoff game for the first time in franchise history. If you couldn't be happy then, you have bigger problems than 7-9 seasons.

There are no more Saints fans here, there all Saints general managers...

That's what the draft is about ... making picks, discussing picks, personnel moves, etc. So, you just want rah-rah-rah's no matter what picks and personnel moves are made??? Soooo, what, ... no dissenting opinions? Just be a fan and say that everything is just awesome even if we have another losing season with an embarrassing defense???

Okay. Have fun with that. I'll continue to see past the pom-pom's and the pep rallies and wonder what this team really needs to turn around a 2-year losing trend and 3 of the last 4.

I also have major issues with our draft, day three as well as day two. And my issues are not with the individual selections, but with a draft strategy that reeks of hubris.

Drafting players is hard. And after the first two or three rounds, I don't expect a team to draft starters at specific positions. Statistically, it doesn't happen often enough. And that's the reason that statistics show that usually trading down and getting more draft picks works better than trading up and giving up draft picks.

The Saints are not two or three players away. We lack depth at a number of positions, and if there is another team in the league that is weaker at guard than we are, may God have mercy on its quarterback. I like doing it by the numbers. At times, there are good reasons to trade up. But most of the time, teams need to resist the temptation because the numbers show that the guy they are trading up for is no more likely to make it big than the guy they will pick if they don't move up. And the numbers truly show that the more draft picks you have, the better off a team is.

We went into this draft with six picks. We are ending up (but there's still time to trade away more 2017 picks) with five picks and one less pick in 2017.

You've been perpetually upset for like the past 3 years.

He's not exactly wrong is he?

The Saints have just six players remaining from the 2011-2014 draft classes: Cam Jordan, Mark Ingram, Kenny Vaccaro, Terron Armstead, John Jenkins, Brandin Cooks. You can argue five of those picks may rank among the top 10-12 players on the Saints roster.

Those five hits haven't saved the Saints, though.

Here's a look at the results of the Saints' draft classes from the four-year span.

Saints' NFL draft results 2011-2014
Remaining players:6 Total drafted:22 Rate:27.2%

27.2% is laughable.

The group think and blind faith on this board is hilarious. The OP speaks the truth and everyone gives him a thumbs down. The Loomis/Payton regime has run the Saints downhill with bad contracts and drafts for years now. The 30 to 25 million in dead cap space annually is a fireable action. Who wastes 1/4 of your cap and is considered a magician?
