Is Kellen Moore not impressed with Rattler? (2 Viewers)

57% comp., 4 TD, 5 INT, 40 QBR... 0-5 W/L.

On its face, there's not much to be impressed with. He absolutely needs to bring in competition there.
I heard Ewers did better against SEC competition than Rattler did. If Rattler gave us some small chances and showed some flashes but couldn't handle increased pressure, imagine what Ewers could have done as a backup.

I can see moore wanting to choose his QB. A lot of new coaches want his guy under center.

I can also see a new and very young first time head coach wanting a younger QB. Moore and Carr are around the same age and even played against each other in college. Lack of an age gap could become a rub in respect and chain of command. Especially if things dont go well early on.
So is McVay and Stafford lol.

Rattler did the best he could with zero o-line, WRs/TEs, and no running game

Agreed.

It’s a very small percentage of QBs (players in general) who ever pan out at a high level so fans who want to take the surest route to being right can proclaim a guy will “be out of the league in five years” or “never be more than a backup.”

Rattler understandably struggled given his inexperience and the supporting cast he worked with, but I thought there were some encouraging signs, too. One of those is, I think, really underappreciated, and that’s how unflappable he seemed to be. It’s how he was able to put up some good stretches of play under a lot of pressure. And we can easily compare that to how Haener looked in his one start, playing with the same group.

Of course that’s not a prediction about his future, just a reason I look forward to seeing how he develops.

I think there is this tendency to downplay inexperience. Every young player has a learning curve and will face challenges and setbacks.

For some perspective, Drew didn’t get much playing time until his second season, in which he faired okay, and then was downright bad in his third season. So bad that it was easy to dismiss him as the sum of his negatives; too short and lacking arm talent - the knocks on him coming into the league. He put up a 2-9 record that year, completing 57% of his passes and throwing more interceptions than touchdowns. Anybody who argued that he would go on to be one of the greatest of all time would have looked like a sunshine pumping fool.

I’m not saying Rattler will have the same career arc, I’m saying we don’t know what his future is. We haven’t seen enough to know.

Right now, I trust Moore enough to sort the position out no matter what that means for any of these players. Time will tell if he’s deserving of that confidence.

Ewers played on a much better team in the SEC than Rattler did.

Why would Warren not fall to 9, there's going to be two WRs, a RB, a QB, and a pass rusher going. There's also the first OL pick. Raiders don't need a TE. Panthers need defense more but if they don't get a Kuechly 2.0 that's their funeral. Only team I'm concerned about getting Warren are the Jets.

I was joking.

Yeah it helps that Ewers actually had an offensive line that was capable of blocking in college as Rattlers OL was near dead last in rankings at South Carolina. Not to mention Ewers was throwing to Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell, Matthew Golden, Isaiah Bond, Gunnar Helm, Jordan Whittington, Ja'Tavion Sanders, Bijan Robinson, Roschon Johnson, and Jonathon Brooks while at Texas.

Rattler's 11 game season in 2020 at Oklahoma is statistically more impressive than anything Ewers did in college. Rattlers final season at South Carolina is better than Ewers final season as well in many different metrics. Such as completion percentage, lower interception percentage, more yards passing yards per game, more rushing yards/touchdowns, yards gained per pass attempt, nearly identical QB Rating with a much worse supporting cast.

This doesn't even factor in "traits", which Rattler blows Ewers out of the water in terms of arm talent, ability to escape pressure, extending plays with his legs, accuracy, etc.

I’ll up my bet limit on this one. Name the number. Rattler is on the roster.
I’m not going to bet. I hope he turns into the next Drew Brees, but if he shows improvement his ceiling for next season is third string running the scout team. I am also pulling for Haener. I also liked JW when he was here. I believed he was a solid backup, but would be hammered on here for not believing he was an elite starter who would take his next team to the Super Bowl. Same reaction for stating my opinion, some of you take things personally.

Ewers is it a bit of a tough assessment to me. The player he became seemed in contrast to the player he was coming out of high school. In good ways and bad. His maturation was notable, growing into a reliable and respected leader, but I thought he also settled into being a system guy more than a playmaker with a killer instinct. Living in Texas, I’ve become somewhat of a casual Longhorn football fan - there are many opinions much better informed than mine - but I thought there were times he didn’t seem to play up to the moment, as if his game had become too safe and reserved. I think his durability is a concern, too.

There are two types of QB's. One's you can win with, and ones you win because of. Teams are always on the hunt for the latter. Rattler had a pristine opportunity to show he was the because of type in the Washington game, and he just missed the mark. Could he still develop into that guy? Absolutely, but if were going off initial impressions you have to operate as though you still don't have a because of QB.

While I don't live in Texas, the Longhorns have been my favorite college team since around 2001, so I pretty familiar with them as well. I'd agree with much of what you said about Ewers. Definitely wasn't a "big game" player. He had so much talent around him, but really didn't do nearly as much as he should have if he was a legit top tier QB prospect with that surrounding talent. Arm is nothing special, ball placement/accuracy is decent, not particularly athletic, and crumbles in big moments. I see nothing more than a Case Keenum/Colt McCoy type backup career for him in the NFL.

How about we get through the draft and then OTA's and minicamps will follow not too long after.

We'll start really finding out who the new staff likes or doesn't like.

The new coaches have seen a ton of tape, but they need to see it all in person too. What is Rattler doing in the offseason to get better? We don't know yet, but we will as this very interesting offseason continues to play out.

If the Saints draft Ewers, they'll have to develop him and they'll have to light a fire under his butt. My worry is if he can really improve the speed of his mental processing, and an offense's tempo. I have the same thoughts about Derek Carr.

The problem with a non-mobile QB is that the defense can stay in base packages and tee off on passing downs. Escapability is a MUST-HAVE skill in today's game. Not many less-mobile pocket-passers can be elite.
