Is Old Music Killing New Music? (6 Viewers)

One thing to remember is that they often highlight artists from the city that hosts the game - so this year’s lineup is very L.A. (the stadium is in Inglewood, which is always up to no good). It’s not just the best artists they can get.

I’m sure it will be a spectacle, I’m gonna watch. But I get it If some people think it’s not their thing, it’s understandable.
Awesome reply Chuck !

The 60s had a lot of great, classic iconic songs, had a lot of great underrated, lesser known and unknown songs but it also had a lot of crap

The 70s had a lot of great, classic iconic songs, had a lot of great underrated, lesser known and unknown songs but it also had a lot of crap

The same is true for the 80s and 90s

And the same will be true of the 2000s and 2010s

When todays teenagers grow up and start making TV shows and movies we’ll see how many of todays music shows up

First Wilson Pickett was awesome....loved his stuff....

In a general sense I agree with above, but my personal feeling is something fairly drastic happened to music from the 70's to the 80's....with the advent of MTV and such it wasn't any longer so much about the music but about the video....MTV wasn't the sole culprit but I really believed that popular music was moving away from great musicians and instruments (at least rarely at the fore front)....and that has very much continued.....

The age of the great musicians being famous and at the fore front of music has long since passed.....Just one old man's opinion.....

Face's point is well taken, I think unlike Led Zep, Pink Floyd, the Allmans, Rush.....how many bands that started in the 80's and 90's will stand that test of time? I think we already know the answer to that....

One, two, one, two, three, four, ow
People moving out, people moving in
Why, because of the color of their skin
Run, run, run but you sure can't hide
An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth
Vote for me and I'll set you free
Rap on, brother, rap on
Well, the only person talking about love thy brother is the preacher
And it seems nobody's interested in learning but the teacher
Segregation, determination, demonstration, integration
Aggravation, humiliation, obligation to our nation
Ball of confusion
Oh yeah, that's what the world is today
Woo, hey, hey
The sale of pills are at an all time high
Young folks walking round with their heads in the sky
The cities ablaze in the summer time
And oh, the beat goes on
Evolution, revolution, gun control, sound of soul
Shooting rockets to the moon, kids growing up too soon
Politicians say more taxes will solve everything
And the band played on
So, round and around and around we go
Where the world's headed, nobody knows
Oh, great googa-looga, can't you hear me talking to you
Just a ball of confusion
Oh yeah, that's what the world is today
Woo, hey
Fear in the air, tension everywhere
Unemployment rising fast, the Beatles new record's a gas
And the only safe place to live is on an Indian reservation
And the band played on
Eve of destruction, tax deduction, city inspectors, bill collectors
Mod clothes in demand, population out of hand, suicide, too many bills
Hippies moving to the hills, people all over the world are shouting, end the war
And the band played on
Great googa-looga, can't you hear me talking to you
Sayin' ball of confusion
That's what the world is today, hey, hey
Let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya
Sayin', ball of confusion
That's what the world is today, hey, hey
Let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya
Ball of confusion

Why does great art survive? This song was written in 1968. It could have been written today with the same
powerful message.

There was an article in my hometown's newspaper about Bad Bunny being the most streamed artist in 2020. The picture with the article, he's wearing rabbit ears and holding what looks to be a gold purse. If you hear one Bad Bunny song, you have heard them all.

The guy who was the half time show last SB, he basically does disco.

That said, there is good music out there, as well as good entertainers.. but what music today lacks, IMO, is the cultural/social/generation defining act... what's the 2010's version of Fortunate Son? Born in the USA? Smells Like Teen Spirit? Nothin' But a G Thang? There are no Bob Dylan's, Bruce Springsteens, Pearl Jams, NWA's, Arrested Developments anymore. The so-called gender movement doesn't come close to the 80's coming out movement with acts like Erasure, Bronsky Beat, Depeche Mode, etc. Even covid doesn't compare to HIV in the 80s - you have to remember, countless deaths from AIDS went undiagnosed, and AIDS was very much a death sentence, plus no one was denying it was real.

Even in the Spanish speaking world, it' been a long time since Facundo Cabral, Nidia Caro, Alberto Cortez, Oscar Chavez...

Good. No one on my lawn.

IMO, today the air waves are over saturated with pop/hip hop/country, to the point that the songs are starting to sound the same, and those are the ones that will become forgettable. But, when something unique comes out, then that should stand out more.

Land of 1,000 Dances is one my all-time favs. Straight 🔥.

And my favorite video performance of it is from the 1971 Soul to Soul show they did on Independence Day in Ghana. Pickett is (as always) electric, but the scenes from the audience are so interesting - some of them are just awe-struck.

I hadn’t seen that clip before

Thanks for posting

The days when you didn’t need a bunch of dancers with fancy dance moves, lasers or pyrotechnics

Just a smoking hot live band playing real instruments, a man and a microphone who was going sing his arse off and you’re going to love every minute of it

Most of my viewing list on YT Music is 80s and 90s rock, some pop, some rap, lots of Madonna, Prince, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Van Halen but I do listen to more recent pop music on occasion. I like some of Lady Gaga's stuff and a lot of Miley Cyrus, especially her cover songs, which she does really well.

Interestingly enough, my youngest daughter bought a record player and has been getting into music on vinyl. She likes it. And she's listening to all kinds of music, mostly newer alternative and lesser know artists. I think she likes those because they typically do smaller, more intimate concerts.

Our house has always been full of music and always encouraged my kids to learn to play. All of them were in marching band at some point in HS. So we trade suggestions for music on Spotify and YT.

I'm definitely gonna watch the halftime show. Always have. Some are pretty great, others are ok and only a few I would call forgettable.

There's a finite number of melodic combinations that the human ear would find pleasing. We will, eventually, run out of "good" music.

Agreed, most music coming out in a calender year is crap. Great art stands the test of time. If I say 1969,do you remember
Woodstock or the #1 song of the year Sugar Sugar by the Archies?
I def. was singing Sugar Sugar last week.

If he was trying to get me to join a cult, this would have done it. Man oh man I am filled with the spirit. If I was driving and this came on, I'd stop the car and get out and start dancing.

Pickett grew up singing choir in the Baptist church in central Alabama with 10 siblings. Can you tell? He could summon that power at will.
