Jameis Winston played a heck of a game against the Saints!!! (1 Viewer)

And when I say that people don't really watch football like that, this is a prime example of what I'm speaking about. I'm guilty (lol) but when we picked him up, I did my due diligence.

Great Defenses? I will leave the 2019 season out because that is an entire discussion in itself but looking at it year by year:
-2015: 26th Points Allowed; 10th in Yards Allow
-2016: 15th in PA; 23rd in YA
-2017: 22nd in PA; 32nd in YA
-2018: 31st in PA; 27th in YA

Great Run Game? The only season he had a great run game was 2015. Let's look at this year by year:
-2016: 8th in attempts, 24th in yards, 31st in TDs, 28th in YPA
-2017: 26th in attempts, 28th in yards, 27th in TDs, 28th in YPA
-2018: 22nd in attempts, 29th in yards, 26th in TDs, 31st in YPA (Winston was 2nd in rushing yards)

And just because I had a little time before my day starts, I took a peek at special teams/kicking:
-2015(2 kickers) - 25th and 36th of 36
-2016: 33th of 36
-2017: 21st of 35
-2018 (2 kickers): 27th and 29th of 35

In what world are those rankings considered "great?" I went through this little exercise to show that you don't have to explain anything to me. The fact that you said that the Bucs had great defenses and running game shows that your view of things are off. That defense didn't start getting fixed until Arians hired Bowles and even then they struggled early. Teddy Bridgewater got a $60 million contract, in large part, because he destroyed those Bucs. lol

Andrew Luck is primarily propped by his win percentage but if you actually looked at Luck play and then , their playstyle is way too similar. Andrew Luck is seen as this major "what if" and generational but we never hear anyone bring up his completion percentage (60.8), interceptions (83 INTs in 86 games), passer rating (89.5), sacks (174), ANY/A and everything else associate with QB play.

Now, if you want to dive into a more nuanced conversation about the matter (and it won't just apply to Winston), we can do that over PM....lol

Who said anyone is blameless? The problem is too many people can't have an actual football conversation so they have to resort to these type of comments. You can say or feel however you want about me but everything I ever say on here has been balanced and more often than not, I'm right (especially when we talk) because I do my best to remain objective. One day, you will learn that when I told football, I'm not driven by feelings....lol

We might need to start having those tough conversations....lol

I agree that JW has the ability to be a viable backup in the NFL. Do you think he could be a starter anywhere? If you do you are in the minority, He was available and not pursued by any team for a starting position in a time when starting qbs are in desperate need.

Still all excuses, deflection and denial. Whether it's this post or any of the many others on SR.
Just to substantiate that, here's just some of the excuses Stans have offered on SR, for any time Jameis has failed or been criticised:-

The scheme
The playcalling
The coaches (subcategories include: Bruce Arians, Dennis Allen, Pete Carmichael, Ken Dorsey)
The vertical shots taken by Jameis (somehow both to his credit and blaming the coach calling them?)
The interceptions not being the QB's fault (while pointing out how many INTs other QBs have had?)
The almost interceptions being not as big an issue as other QBs' almost interceptions
The way fans evaluate QB play being 'wack'
The receivers
The run game
The defense
The special teams
The team Jameis was playing on at the time
Drew Brees being too good
Tom Brady recruiting his own receivers
Having to be in a competition with Taysom Hill that one time in training camp
Andrew Luck being successful (despite arguing that QBs and wins aren't related)
'Emotions' / 'Feelings'

BONUS! New excuses:-
COVID (which obviously only affected one team).
Taysom being too good at football.
The system the QB is in being the real reason historically great QBs are/were any good at all.
Those 2019 and 2024 seasons obviously just being statistical outliers, that should be discounted from any discussion.
The schedule being too hard.
Throwing interceptions that the other team doesn't score from don't count as bad quarterbacking 🤪🤪

[EDIT] Bonus !BONUS! Newest excuses coming soon from a Stan near you:-
Throwing too many* passes 🤪🤪

* AKA the more you perform your basic skill, the more your limited capacity in that skillset is exposed

Do you notice one reason not listed for Jameis not being successful or receiving criticism? That's right, it's never Jameis.

Blameless Jameis.
The man, the myth, the NFL backup.

He made some really pretty throws. A couple that made me wonder, "Where was that when he was here?"

Good dude, glad to see him getting love from all our guys.

I like Jameis more because of his personality, but I do think Carr is a better QB ... It's good to see Jaboo out on the field and I would love to see the Browns keep him for a season or two while grooming an eventual top-level replacement they're likely to draft next spring.

Yall are saying this like we didn't get 21 points from Taysom having his annual super saiyan game...lol.

It's also why not looking at the totality of the game is equally as bad as relying on stats alone. We didn't win because of QB play and they didn't lose because of QB play. Crazy concept; I know. But there are things outside the QB position that determines wins and losses, especially when a QB accounts for 400 yards of offense alone.
Last year when taysom scored like 5 touchdowns Carr was praised for the offense moving the ball lol

In my unprofessional opinion he plays too hot and cold to be a starter. For whatever reason most NFL coaches believe he doesn’t have what it takes to start any longer. My point was he can have a career in the NFL as a backup and the Saints could’ve used him this season.
And what do you feel about Carr

Relax, dude, he is what he is. He’s been in the league for 8 seasons….and has now started 100 games exactly.

He’s 43-57.

You can have all the stats you want…..but that, my friend, is not a winner.

Over those 100 games he’s had great defensives, great running back games….but one consistent. When he starts, the team loses more often than not.

Not sure how else to explain it to you. You are what your career record says you are.
The Bucs defense was trash lol

76-91 I’m not a fan of the guy don’t feel like he fits the city and honestly don’t think his teammates present or past like him very much not many players under contract are going to say that though

I can’t wait until he’s gone and they really get serious about building a contender again

He has already done what Watson could not do. I can see Watson getting moved this offseason.

Watson will be around next year. I think the contract and injury make it difficult for them to move on. I did read something today saying they would bring in competition for him next year either through free agency or the draft.

And what do you feel about Carr
Carr is more reliable, he’s not gonna take a game on his back and carry a team to victory like JW can but he’s not gonna fold like a cheap tent like JW does too often. I think JW is a solid number two and is better than either backup on our roster. Why NFL teams didn’t pursue him as a backup was a head scratcher, he seems to have a good attitude and is a team player. Maybe most teams want a younger backup, Idk.

Do I think he can be a starter? Yes....why:
*Since coming into the league, he has never rated below 16th in terms of stats and metrics tied to QB productivity when starting at least half the season.
*He got better each season as a Buc, being a top 10 QB in 2018 before being thrown into a brand new offense in 2019.
*In 2019, even with throwing 30 interceptions, the Bucs were #3 in total scoring and top 10 in points per possession.
*30 interceptions didn't keep the Bucs out the playoffs. Matter of fact, they were eliminated during a 4 game win streak. The first 8 games tell the story of the 2019 Bucs season (what was Teddy Bridgewater's best game during that 5-0 run?)
*He sits a year behind Drew, which he stats has been the best thing that happened for him in the NFL
*In 2021, where our roster is in shambles because COVID destroyed the salary cap, he has a 5-2 record while being top 10 in nearly QB stat and metric, being top 3 in at least half. And this is while throwing to UDFAs and Kamara (who would have obliterated his career high in TD receptions)
*He played 2 out of 3 games in 2022 with a broken back and ruptured tendon, yet we care more about the 2 losses than any other game he played as a Saint, for whatever reason.
*This season, he took over an 1-6 team who was near or at the bottom in every offensive stat and he is currently graded as a top 10 QB, while leading a top 3 pass offense since taking over as a starter, being 2-2. If it wasn't for Taysom, we probably lose that game.

Sometimes, some things aren't based on what happens on the field.

As far as being in the minority, it has never bothered me. I always try to approach thing as objectively as I can, so you will always find that while you might not agree, my logic is sound. And truth is, more often than not, my points are proven right. Crap, I told folks why Russ would fail under Sean Payton 2 years before it was reality and I predicted what would happen last seasons...lol.

76-91 reliable to do what exactly ?
