JD's top 10 plays in Saints history. (2 Viewers)

I think Garrett Hartley's kick to go to the show should be up there.

I agree, it allowed us to actually be able to say the words Saints and Superbowl in the same sentence without being put into straight jackets. I was beside myself because whether we won or lost the SB, pigs had already flown, hell had already frozen over, and the SAINTS were IN the Superbowl!

When you can get fans and both benches to stand up and yell that's memorable

Honorable mention for Turley ripping off the helmet of a defender and throwing it across the field.

Pretty Good list. I would make a couple of changes. Honestly, last year was the most important, historic year in Saints history. I understand that JD may not have wanted to be so heavy on one year, but it is what it is. There's no way the kick that sent the Saints to the Superbowl in Overtime is not one of the top plays in Saints history. If we had lost the Superbowl, that kick would be #1. Can anyone argue that? Plus, I know great plays last in our memory but those tend to get lost on paper. Great plays in games we win will stand through time because at the end of the day it remains as a win and wins are remembered from one generation to the next. Without further ado,

LiveFromDC's top 10 Plays in Saints History:
10. Meachem's Miracle - Meachem single handedly won the game. I almost ranked it higher thant the Turkey Day Takeaway for the simple fact that Meachem's play turned the moment AND scored. Jenkins play although a HUGE play wasn't big enough to help us win the game alone though it comes pretty close! To me there's two reason's TDT is bigger. It was a nationally televised game (record breaker in fact) and....

9. The Turkey Day Takeaway - we beat Dallas!

8. Dempsey's Big Foot - The only play on the list that's a NFL record. It's been equaled since but not broken.

7. Deuce's Dozer. - Big Momentum Play! Playoff game, too! Huge, however its not as big as the next play which sealed the first Saints playoff victory in history.

6. "Hakim Drops the Ball!" - Here's where the firsts begin. First playoff win was sealed with this play.

5. Gilliam's Kickoff Return - First play in Saint's History!

4. Gleason's blocked punt - First game back in the Dome! Probably the loudest moment in Dome history as well.

AMBUSH!!!! Get it, HA, you didn't see it coming! My #4a play is another special team marvel. The ultimate tide turning play in the HISTORY of the NFL. Ambush.

3. Porter's Pick (no.) 4 - Once again, we were on the brink of a lost when the momentum was suddenly shifted the other direction.

2. "You Belong Here" - I can't fathom a way this kick is lower than 2. As much as our #1 play was great for all it accomplished and the exhileration I felt, watching this kick (it was like slow motion) expertly, divinely as if guided by angels...better yet Saints, sail through the air perfectly in line to split the middle of the uprights...was just ineffable. I can't explain the amount of emotions that ran through me in that short instance. Disbelief, relief, excitment, all at once. It's the only play on the list, and I've seen all but one live, that made me cry. If not for what #1 meant (winning a Superbowl), it would be #1 hands down.

1. Porter's Pick 6 - No words necessary.

I screamed with joy for the SB Int, but the Hartley kick brought me to tears as well. As a matter of fact, I was so overcome with emotion even before the kick, that I was brought to tears telling my 6 y.o. that we'd be in the SB if he made the kick.

I think we could do with two lists, then.

Most important or biggest plays
(Porter's Pick 6)
(Hartley's Field Goal)
(Hakim's muffed punt)

and

Most exciting or extraordinary plays.
(helmet toss)
(river city relay)
(Turkeyday Takeaway)
(Gleason's Blocked Punt)

Good list, but it's missing one crucial play in Saints history that should be on it:

In 1987, with about 2 minutes left in the Saints-Steelers game in Pittsburgh and with the Saints up 20-14, Sam Mills made one of the biggest stops in team history: He slammed violently into Frank Pollard on 4th and 1 from the Saints' goalline to preserve the victory and wrap up the first ever winning season in the then 21-year-old franchise's history. Due to a players' strike that year, the season had been shortened to 15 games. That win made the Saints 8-3, assuring them that they were no longer perennial losers. That play will forever be etched into my brain. After decades of futility, finally, we were winners! All hail the Field Mouse! I would put that play above the River City Miracle and even Meachem's takeaway because, in terms of the history of the franchise, it was the Saints' most significant moment until it won its first playoff game.

I would also take Porter's pick of Favre over Hartley's OT FG because while Hartley's kick won the game, without Porter's INT we were done. Not to mention Porter made a big, momentum-turning, game-changing play while Hartley just did his job and made a FG. A great FG, a historic FG, but a FG nonetheless.

River city relay didnt even win the game though that is why I rop it for ambush. Hartley making the FG was good but the pic ended the drive that would have ended our season.

I will argue though that Mechums play was better then Jenkins. meach is a WR that doesnt even play specialteams and he stole the ball and ran back for a TD!!! Jenkins made a OUTSTANDING PLAY but it and the river city relay are 10a and 10b in my mind.

I don't understand why Gilliam's kick return makes the list. It's an interesting footnote, but hardly noteworthy beyond that.

(Gleason's Blocked Punt)

I agree. There is no way Gleason's blocked punt shouldn't be #1 in the grand scheme of things. That blocked punt was one of the greatest moments in sports history and was a great moment in New Orleans history at the same time. On the field it was just a blocked punt but to do it after the first game back in the dome, against the Falcons, on Monday Night after the Saints defense stuffs the Falcons on the first drive for a 3 and out then come out to block the punt returned for a TD is just incredible. Of all ways for us to hit a big play in that situation we do it on a blocked punt which is one of the more rare plays in the NFL. That play set the tone for the game. That game set the tone for the season. That season set the tone for the Brees-Payton era.

The Porter picks were both truely great plays on the field on the biggest stages. Both were to seal the two biggest games the Saints had ever played and both were against hall of fame Qbs. Just in the sport aspect they were easily #1 and #2.

Emotional aspect, Gleason's punt wins it for me.

Meach's play was one of those plays that just doesn't happen. You never see anything like that. Bush's run against the Cardinals was jaw dropping and one of the most freaky athletic plays I've seen. The River City Relay had a combination of things. It was a great play, it envolved so many players, it was so improbable, it came at the end of an aweful performance at a terrible time in the season. It took fans from really low to the highest of highs and back down to the lowest of lows in about 30 seconds. For a team to have one of the greatest last second touchdowns in NFL history to bring the game within one point and have the kicker miss the extra point is just absurd, yet was so fitting to the Saints history.

Hakim dropping the ball was another that had a ton behind it. At the time it was the most significant play in Saints history. It came after the Saints opened a huge lead against the high powered Rams. The Saints blew the scoreboard up and put the game out of reach, or at least most had thought it was out of reach. The Rams make an insane comeback with three touchdowns in a matter of minutes and everyone in the dome and watching on TV new without a shadow of a doubt the game was over when we had to give the ball back to Warner and the greatest show on turf. It was setting up to be easily the most crushing defeat in Saints history in the first playoff game ever played in the dome. Then Hakim, a rather insignificant player otherwise drops the ball and an even less significant player falls on it and is now a household name in the state of Louisiana. The Saints go on to win their first playoff game and knock out the Rams.

I'm a huge Deuce fan, but I'm not sure his "dozer" run should be on the list, especially at the expense of ambush and Hartley's kick in the NFCCG. Otherwise, I'm fine with Duncan's list. It has a nice mixture of historically significant plays and outstanding football plays.
Deuce's Dozer epitomizes the heart and desire of one of the greatest Saints players ever. It absolutely deserves to be on this list. Deuce said, "I was not ready for our season to end."

I don't understand how you leave this play out. It was the biggest play in the first 20 years of the franchise.

To original list

Add
1. Ambush
2. Hartley's Field Goal to take us to the Promised Land

Delete
1. River City Relay - Great fun to watch but in the end meant nothing
2. Duece's run - Had to pick one to remove so that had to be it

Otherwise.. Good list
