Jeff Duncan on Sean Payton 2023 (1 Viewer)

I wouldn't be about this at the beginning of the year but Dennis Allen's incompetence has changed my perspective. I'd happily take him back.

His QB is already in place since Winston was hand picked by him and winning with him. The only new question is his durability. He can draft a guy like Hooker to develop since Dalton has everyone ready for a succession plan. Weapons have been added to the offense and we added to the o-line.

He'd also add a buzz to the franchise. We've been playing so bad that everyone is talking about Payton. Everyone would be watching his return. Free agents could follow.

Weird that New Orleans is the place in the NFL where several first have occurred: a coach suspended for a whole year and a program punished. Plus all the other first the Saints have notched over the years: worst defense the year Ryan was DC. So a coach coming back to a team he left? Only in New Orleans
Bud Grant returned to Minnesota after a one season absence.

Not biting Scooter, but if you’re right that goes a long way in regards to me respecting you again (not that any of that matters)

To me this seems like wishcasting.

Why leave for one season and why would DA agree to be a fake HC for one year?

The only way this would make any sense is if Payton was in more trouble for the Dolphin thing and was facing another suspension and instead of all that drama he agreed to just step away for a year. But that still doesn’t answer as to why anyone would willingly be a HC placeholder
Why would the suspension just go away though? If he truly was facing a suspension then he's still facing it whenever he returns. It didn't just vanish, Goodell hates him.

If Payton does come back...

What do we do?

-We have to purge $60 Milly.
-No 1st round pick
-Super old team with pending suspensions
-No QB of the future

Payton would have to go back to staying to up 4 am every night to outcoach other teams with the talent deficit and still probably lose 7-10 games.

That's what got Payton burnt out in the 1st place.
He's always going to stay up that late to game plan.

maybe that’s why they kept the staff intact? when he comes back DA goes back to DC? he may have been burnt out and needed a break.

When Payton retired, wasn’t there reports that Gayle Benson had offered him a sabbatical if he wanted it? Obviously he didn’t go that route, but if he ended up getting one and coming back, great.

You have got to be kidding me....his last season here with record setting injuries the team still had a winning record and was a Rams lame collapse from making the playoffs....maybe his best coaching job ever (other than our SB year).....
Yeah, missed the playoffs. Such elite coaching. Injuries blah blah blah.

No thanks.
