Jeff Duncan on Sean Payton 2023 (1 Viewer)

I'll believe it when I see it, don't understand why he would write that unless he really believes that source is correct.

When it comes to the Saints:

Better chance of this happening then we ever had at Deshaun Watson coming to play here. By the way thank goodness that didn’t happen.

Theory/opinion on this:

Let’s say for a moment the “source” is Don Yee (Payton’s agent) or someone affiliated with him.

If the same source told Duncan last year that Payton wasn’t retiring (to hide the Dolphins tampering), this could also be a trial balloon to signal to the Saints that he really is interested.

Lots of “ifs” but honestly it’s the bye week of a lost season, so what else is there to talk about?

Oh Lord, please no.

If you want to see the New Orleans Saints turn into merely "The Tom Brady Show", that's what this would be. Look at Tampa - they have zero identity now other than "the team that Tom Brady plays for".

No thanks.
Not gonna happen because SP is too strong a HC figure and commands attention

It's over. He is not coming back. He left largely because he believed he could no longer contend for a championship with the Saints and he did not want to be part of a rebuilding project. If anything, the past five months have shown the team is even less competitive than he thought. And then there are the draft picks we traded to the Eagles. It's a mess, and he is not coming back.
I don't think so, I think he was exhausted, couldn't keep going with out his partner Drew Brees and didn't want to endure a rebuild.

If this means DA won't be back I'll play.

SP needs a good qb. He couldn’t find a Bree’s replacement so he left. He will choose a team with a proven qb.

If Payton does come back...

What do we do?

-We have to purge $60 Milly.
-No 1st round pick
-Super old team with pending suspensions
-No QB of the future

Payton would have to go back to staying to up 4 am every night to outcoach other teams with the talent deficit and still probably lose 7-10 games.

That's what got Payton burnt out in the 1st place.
I've seen you say we're a super old team a few times. I think that's misleading. While the ave age may be high, only 3 or 4 players of significance are up in age. Davis , Cam, Dalton and Taysom. The other players over 30 will be gone next yr or hardly play. Most of our core are either young or in their prime

The reason I figured Payton would never come back is because I never envisioned that Allen would be in jeopardy of losing his job after one season. Most of us thought this was a playoff team, and you don't fire a playoff coach to bring back the old coach. (And Payton probably wouldn't agree to come back if it meant firing his friend.) But if Allen is going to get fired anyway...

If Payton wants to return, he could do worse than New Orleans. There is probably no other place where he would be as comfortably in charge as he would be here. Others have already mentioned that some of the teams he's being linked to are cheap. And even if he would be given a lot of control to start, that can change very quickly.

So I could see him coming back. I don't think it's particularly likely, but I could see it.

Interesting.

In any case, if Payton has the itch to Coach again, New Orleans holds the rights for 3 years. So, they have to be first on his list, because they DON'T have to trade him (assuming they'd want to replace Allen). Otherwise, they will trade him, for hopefully a king's ransom.

If he comes back to us, I can't see us retaining Dennis Allen. I'd have to imagine that would 'make things weird'.
