Jeff Duncan on Sean Payton 2023 (6 Viewers)

Payton’s interest in coaching the 3 west coast teams is one-sided right now. There hasn’t been indication that the Chargers and Cardinals want to move on from Staley and Kingsbury. Articles are speculating that the teams will have interest based on Payton having interest and assuming the Chargers are missing the playoffs. They have to create the openings just like we need to make our HC position available.

Has a team ever fired a coach one year after extending the coach with guaranteed money?

I always thought the Payton to Dallas thing was more national media driven. You can be good friends with people but that doesn't always mean you want to work for them. If Payton can be retained by the Saints, then this whole thing becomes rather unique. Do you pull for the Chargers to win so they don't fire their coach or do you pull for them to lose because if they fire their coach and secure Payton via trade, you get a better draft pick?

I'm not a believer in the Cardinals job. They just gave Murray a ridiculous contract that will hamstring any future coach. They may fire Kingsbury but that job got a whole lot worse with the Murray injury on Monday night. Murray will not be back until mid season next year. Jameis still wasn't himself before he suffered a foot injury in training camp, the ACL injury from Halloween 2021 was still affecting him a little bit in July, he began working off the side at camp.

There is gonna be a darkhorse somewhere, everyone that has a coaching vacancy is gonna approach Payton.

Would the Chargers really fire Staley if they make the playoffs? Their remaining schedule (vs. Titans, at Colts, vs. Rams, & at Broncos) suggests that they should make the playoffs compared to the Patriots schedule. Seems like they’d have to give those games away and play down to the level of those teams to go less than 3-1 or 4-0 during that stretch and 10-7 or 11-6 overall.

Assuming the Chargers make the playoffs and Cardinals keep Kingsbury 9 months after giving him an extension, it’s more than likely that there won’t be any openings for Payton to coach elsewhere. The Rams don’t have the assets to trade, plus McVay’s extension. Staley has to practically lay down and blow those games to lose his job.

Potential openings are heavily dependent on one coach walking away, another coach falling apart and those teams owners willing to just eat their coaches’ new extension money and give up first round draft picks while doing so.
The Cowboys made the playoffs in 2018 and still tried to work out a trade for Payton.

I was just thinking if Payton is coming back to New Orleans why wouldn't he wait until the 2024 season?
We'll be in better cap situation, and at the top of the draft.

Because when is the last time CSP backed down from a challenge? One of the reasons why a lot of us want him back....Great coaches can go into bad situations and change them....immediately.....see 2006

This year worked out

Da will never get a HC again so he won't be going anywhere

Sean Payton will come back because no one is giving us what he is worth

Gruden got 2 first and 2nd round picks before he even had a superbowl win.... SP changed an entire organization and won a superbowl.

We probably will have TB12 (poor Winston not again) for 1 year

Then SP can see if he can get one more shot at a QB.. if not.. then 2 years from now he's out.

They fired Schottenheimer after a 14-2 season in either 06 or 07.

My feeling is if CSP comes back JW is still under contract next year? He will be the QB next year....CSP is like that....would love to see it happen....

Regardless, I still think we need to consider drafting some one. Also, do we trust Sean with drafting a QB, or blabbing about who we like before the draft?

We don't have a first round draft pick for '23. Need an interim qb for the '23 season and draft one in '24. Winston or Dalton will most likely have to be one of the starters next season and if we hold onto Taysom, he could be the backup option for '23.

All of that could change if a good FA QB is available.

Hendon Hooker or bust in round 2. Dude had a better year last year than this year, he threw more passes this year which is why his numbers were more eye popping. He didn't get nearly as much fanfare last season. In 2022 he was like over 80% completion rate in the shorter passer game and like 43% on the deep ball. You just need to craft an offense around him that he's familiar with.

Surely we aren’t still doing this? Winston is done as a Saint unless Dalton gets injured. There is absolutely no way Payton comes back to New Orleans to coach Winston, he isn’t good at all.

He had decent numbers with Payton last season before getting injured. Really wish he had stayed healthy last year so we'd have a larger body of work to evaluate.
