Jeff Duncan on Sean Payton 2023 (2 Viewers)

That sounds nice in theory however, we need a long-term commitment, not a one-night stand. One of the reasons we are in the situation we are in now is the "tomorrow doesn't matter" cap management style via Loomis from Payton. If he leaves, we do not want a repeat.
Two years in coaching isn’t a one-night stand. It’s more of a commitment than most marriages, lol.

Of course. My point is that being a “fallback” doesn’t lead to a lack of commitment.

Two years is a long time in coaching.

This isn't a possibility I even considered a couple of days ago and so I'll admit I can't weigh it without some serious skepticism. Skeptical that there's any real merit to it, but if there is, skeptical that it's a net-win for the Saints *unless* it comes with a renewed commitment from Payton that New Orleans is where he wants to be longterm, backed up by an extension. There's always the possibility that being away from the Saints has made him long for what he had, but then it would sure be nice if the reporting put the Saints in front for his return. That's apparently not the case.

So that leaves me wondering if there's an angle here that isn't obvious beyond the initial excitement of: oh, hey, Payton might want to come back! Two years isn't that long in coaching if it's a pre-determined split again in two years.

I know there has been some debate about how exactly the Saints rights to Payton work; whether it's the remaining two years through 2024 or if it's the remaining two years through perpetuity. If it's the latter, then something has to give for Payton to make a return to coaching, which could be the undercurrent to these emerging rumors.

Something I hadn't considered before but what happens to his rights if Payton expresses an interest in returning and the Saints pass on re-employing him?
Fire the entire front office and teepee their mansions, and I'd bring the pitchforks. That would be incredibly stupid. It's one thing if Payton doesn't want to be here and we trade him, but if he himself wants to come back, you don't hesitate. Two seasons or not.

Problem I have is if DA get the boot (which I hope) and then the Payton/saints dance thing drags out and he ultimately goes somewhere else and we’re 2 weeks behind every other team in finding a head coach. Just like last season. Hope the chargers force the issue by firing there head coach prior to the season end.

I get the sentiment, but the trade-off to bringing him back for two seasons, without an extension (if that was the case), would be the possibility of his walking away and the team getting nothing in compensation once his contract is honored.

I guess the hypothetical becomes:

Would it be better to have Payton back for two years, and only two years, or trade his rights in the offseason for whatever the team can get?

Sp just a sucker for the flare..

If saints organization was really moving on... you think they'd promote co captains as Defensive Coordinators

Dude just wanted a year off to hang out with his 24 year old wife.

This thread reminds me of the Suh and Watson threads. We know how those turned out.

I can see that side. I guess it’s a matter of opinion.

Personally, I’d much rather have him back without any guarantees. Either we get a QB in 23 and he gets to start molding, or we’re positioned for a top draft QB in 24, who he gets to pick and work with. To me, even that would be more valuable than a draft pick or two.

As much as I like the idea of getting rid of DA, do we really want Payton playing come and go like this? I hate to use a relationship analogy, but it's like an ex returning after leaving. Yes, you two had something special, but he chose to leave and considered other options.
Sometimes getting back with your ex is better than the first time around. You focus on the things that worked well and maybe experiment with some things to make the things that didn't work so well, better.

This is still a football analogy, right?

It's weird to ask for a long term commitment as a team after dumping a coach only one season into it. Granted, Allen isn't exactly new to all of this. So his is probably considered a unique situation.

As for Payton, it's pretty simple, if Gayle decides she wants Payton back and he wants back in, you work in a healthy extension to both ensure the coach will be around a few years and have leverage if he tries to bolt for another team.

Another general point. Him considering the LA teams is pretty reasonable since it's near where he lives currently. I'd fully expect him to do all due diligence he possibly can before looking at the Saints. And regardless, he has to wait for Allen to be fired anyway. Nothing he can do until that happens.

We all know it’s not about who can offer the highest salary between the saints and any other team. I’m sure there’s going to be extension talks. Gayle will pay whatever it takes to get him here if it’s a mutual want to. Now the chargers may up the salary a little bit, but they will blink faster.

Payton asked Jeff Duncan to put this story out there in order to raise his own value with other suitors like the Cowboys, Chargers, Cardinals. Why aren't the Saints putting a cabash on it? Because it helps them to raise his value. Payton had every opportunity to take a one year break from coaching and then come back to the Saints. Instead, he created a parade. I don't think anyone is going to want him unless it's the Cowboys.

There’s a market but not anywhere he wants to be. I think he really wants the chargers job but if they make the playoffs I doubt they fire their coach. There’s nothing attractive about the other possible openings. The boys will be in the playoffs so I doubt Jerry fires McCarthy

I was just thinking if Payton is coming back to New Orleans why wouldn't he wait until the 2024 season?
We'll be in better cap situation, and at the top of the draft.
