Jonathan Vilma Arrested - Confirmed (1 Viewer)

Without knowing how the officers were treating him, how do you know it was arrogance? Let's be honest, cops have about the same chance as being calm and respectful as they do being angry and disrespectful. I just think it's funny to hear several people say they lost respect for Vilma when they don't know exactly what happened, only vague details. What if it comes out that the officer was in the wrong as far as the arrest is concerned? Would you regain your respect for Vilma? Or is the act of daring to question a cop, no matter what they do, ground for immediate lost of respect? Let it be made clear I do not think the cop has done anything wrong, but this black-and-white perspective just seems out of whack. Is it smart to question a cop? No. But do a lot of them DESERVE to be questioned? You betcha.

I understand where you are coming from and yes absolutely the respect I had for him can be regained. I hope if he returns to the Saints he will contribute to the city with charitable work like every professional athlete should do. I honestly think with their contracts and how kids look up to them it should be a requirement from every team especially in the NFL. How else can fans regain respect from the players in the NFL? But then again it's not like nobody is watching the NFL but even so it is their duty because of the obscene contracts and especially since a lot of them come from low income backgrounds.

I don't want to get off the topic on this police issue but. I agree with your points. You are correct in the lack of education in law enforcement but when these department don't exactly pay well what do you expect. Thankfully I am not in that category.

As far as this incident I didn't lose repect just because he questioned the COPS? I lost repect when from i read he was driving like a reckless maniac. Now if you did something like that would you say why do i have to get out of the car? I know Vilma is pretty well spoken and seems like a smart guy although he went to Miami(lol) but if I did something like that I would just say to myself damn I got caught. Listen I have locked up a lot of guys who have done stupid stuff but they were man enough to admit wrong doing. My problem is it doesn't sound like he is a stand up guy. You messed up cops caught you, oh well, don't be a jerk about it is all I'm saying.

I understand your point but given the fact that he was stopped by an plain clothes cop in an unmarked car in a city that has previously had trouble with bad guys impersonationg cops wouldn't you have been careful ? I think most of us would react like you described if we were pulled over by a marked patrol car with a uniformed cop behind the wheel. When we rented a car in Miami only 3 years ago we were warned by Hertz about people impersonating cops and what to do if we were pulled over.

there are ways to mitigate concerns when getting pulled over by an unmarked police vehicle and not in uniform police officer - remember it was 3 pm, daylight. you can pull into a place where there are lots of people, you can pull into a fire station, city building, police station, etc.

I never claimed they weren't smart. Most of them lack an education higher than high school, which is true in most cases.

And really, your last statement says more about cops than I ever could. According to you, an officer wouldn't assist me because they didn't like my stance? And this is supposed to change how I think about them? :jpshakehead:

that statement could not be further from the truth.... most dept. require some college education and many require a degree.

in the state of ga the police academy alone is equivalent to 40 college hours and that does not count toward the mandatory min. college required by the hiring dept.

I am going to assume , based on your examples previous , that english credits are not heavily sought after by said department .

Scenario:
Individual is driving a vehicle and an unmarked car pulls up behind it with it's lights on. The individual pulls over and the unmarked car pulls behind it. The plain clothes officer approaches the vehicle, but cannot see through the tinted glass.

Officer: "Sir I need you to step out of the vehicle" - the first words coming from an officer when he approaches a car and is unable to determine who is in the vehicle, how many people are in the vehicle and the intent of the occupants.

Occupant's response: "Why what's going on?"

Officer responds: "sir just step out of the vehicle."

--- would you be willing to step out of a vehicle with no clue as to why you got pulled over?

Officer: "Step out of the vehicle now"

Occupant complies, steps out of the vehicle and is ordered to put his hands on the hood of the vehicle. The officer has yet to tell the occupant why he has pulled him over, and got immediately defensive when the occupant didn't get out of the vehicle and the officer was already nervous for his/her own safety. The occupant finally complies and puts his hands on the hood - there's a little pulling away from the officer as the officer tries to restrain the occupant to perform what would appear to be a warranted search of the vehicle.

Who is in the wrong?

I don't blame the officer for being nervous about the situation, nor do I blame the occupant of the vehicle for being apprehensive about the plain clothes officer who had not made his intent clear. Poor communication and probably an exaggerated situation. I've been the passenger in a vehicle which was pulled over for making a right turn just as a light turned red, the driver was ticketed for wreckless driving and "nearly hitting pedestrians" who hadn't even considered stepping into the roadway at the time.

Sorry for double post - but come on you people are now attacking other people's "english" in a thread whose discussion is regarding Vilma's accident? Maturity goes a long way down both lanes of the highway of life.

*besides - this is an online forum not a grammar class

yeah, use the OJ & Vick defense - it's someone else fault. that will get you a lot of mileage.:hihi:

I know you're joking to an extent but Vilma is far from your typical Miami player and a far cry from OJ and Vick. He graduated from Miami with a Finance Degree and around a 3.5 GPA. The guy is incredibly well spoken and I can easily see how he could take offense to being treated like a thug.

Nah , just messin with him as we've gone back and forth a bit , hence the little toothy guy . But thanks for standing up for the integrity of anonymous internet discourse . I do drink lots of milk , so I've got that going for me ... Oh , and the highway metaphor , on the traffic stop thread , if intentional is $$ .

as heavily as say your job.....

glad im not at work.

What if the closest "fire station, city building, police station" was a block or so away?

I suppose that would give the plain clothes policeman grounds for saying that he was evading arrest as well.

I only have one point to argue with this. Has anyone seen Jonathan Vilma? He is absolutely terrifying. He could crush my skull with one hand. I'm 80% sure that his diet consists of a steady flow of newborn children. He is the last person I would ever want to get in a confrontation with.

So my point is, if Vilma was "resisting arrest" how the hell would he not get away with it? Mere taser guns and handcuffs cannot contain a man like Vilma.

hell, i'm not a star athlete and i'd be suspicious of an unmarked car.

I agree completely. Half the time I'm suspicious of MARKED police cars. Not all cops are great people you know, they have more than their fair share of ********. I'm surprised so many people are acting like they've never had a disagreement with a police officer before.
