Jordan Schultz: Bears Job is a Two-Horse Race Between Mike McCarthy and Ben Johnson (5 Viewers)

Yep, our only chance to get a quality head coach was to act fast and persistent. The Saints (Mickey) could be in denial, pretending like they have options. Forcing the Bears to make a decision yesterday, for Mike, or the Jets for Glenn, could’ve given us an advantage. We do not need to have face to face meetings with either of those guys because they both worked here.
We should have already completed our candidate evaluations since we fired our coach mid-season. McCarty is the only guy we may not have a complete dossier on, but considering he was our OC in the early 2000s, it should not be difficult to update.

Unless Tom Brady has a lot of pull there I just don't see the appeal in that franchise.
Top ten draft pick and possibly more control (select your own GM). We are the team it's hard to see the appeal with.

McCarthy hasn't worked here since the early 2000s and Glenn hasn't worked here in 3 years. It's a totally different team and situation. You have to meet with all these guys in person and talk over what their vision is for your roster and your team. It would be negligent to hire any coach without an in person interview.

They need to do a full set of interviews and only then make the decision. You don't rush this or you do what they did 3 years ago and end up going with Dennis Allen because you never really gave other coaches a chance.

And we have just as good of a chance getting a quality HC, maybe a better chance, if we go through a through and full process before making a hire. Truth is that often time the hot coaches aren't the ones that end up with success. That was certainly the case when we hired DA. Nobody would have predicted O'Connel as the gem of that HC class or Payton as the gem of his class.

That’s what they’re saying. The Raiders were a team that he wasn’t going to consider but Brady sold him enough to consider it.

This is where I heard it.

I’ve been thinking about how a coach would view the different head coaching openings. The Raiders would have to be the worst. Ben Johnson would have to be crazy to take that job. He’ll be guaranteed to lose the division race for the next 5 years, pretty much. (KC,Denver, SD, Oak). The Saints from a competitive perspective would have to be the best choice. Isn’t that what they are signing up to do, to compete and try and win, first your division? With that said, Ben Johnson should still be a strong possibility for Chicago. Pretty stiff competition in that division as well, GB and Minn and Detroit! The jets have Buffalo and the new Vrabel led Pats and Miami to deal with. The Saints, all a coach would have to worry about is a 9-7 Tampa /Atl team. Maybe this is why we feel we can be patient.

That's a valid point, but you know why we hired the deer, that decision was made, and we went through the motions. We fired our coach mid-season, so the candidate dossiers should be mostly complete. I disagree with the interview part with Glenn because he was in our building; you probably have more intel on him than anyone. I can understand McCarty was 20 years ago. I've served on a few job search committees in my current job, and usually, an interview just confirms what's on paper between the person's CV (resume) and references. I'm not saying these guys need to be hired tomorrow; the process is not complicated, considering we knew we would be here three months ago.

the saints will take forever. they will not rush this and could possibly lose out on a few, but in the end they will get someone they are confident in. question.l is will we lol

Brady has said that he’s not desperate to jump at the first HC offer - if he gets one - and that he’s content to stay in Buffalo if the right situation isn’t available.

So Brady isn’t a given, even if everything else falls as some have predicted.

This is where I’m starting to think that it’ll be Rizzi if McCarthy and Glenn go elsewhere.
We could end up with Rizzi.

Hopefully. I suspect Joe Brady would be better then both of them.
I'm not sure about that. Joe seems to possess a very solid offensive mind. Think about this. The two places where he was successful (LSU) he had Joe Burrow and Buffalo he's got Josh Allen.

He struggled with not much to work with in Carolina. I'm not sure he's ready for the top spot yet.

That's what we keep telling ourselves, but the market will give us an objective view by the end of this.

Those are just facts. Mark Davis is a terrible owner and we also have a top 10 draft pick.

People said the same thing about the OC position last year. Lame duck coach, no QB, no talent, incompetent GM, etc. so we can't possibly hire a good OC and we would be forced to promote Ronald Curry to OC.

But, we got one of the hot OCs who is now probably getting another NFL job as an OC very quickly.

Now, it's no QB, no talent, incompetent GM, etc. so we can't possibly hire a good HC and we would be forced to promote Rizzi to HC.

I get that people are down on the team and the organization for good reason, but we can get a good HC candidate just like we got a good OC.

Even if you know a guy, you still need to know how he plans to fix the issues you have, what his vision is for the roster, and what his plan is for the QB position. Most of the good candidates show up with a full plan on how they are going to address all the issues and build the roster. You need to find out what plan all the options have first to see if you think it is a good plan and second because you are getting a fresh set of eyes looking at your organization and suggesting ways to fix it. That can be helpful and provide new ideas even if you don't hire them.

Brady was brought in to bring some legitimacy to what is widely viewed as a slipshod front office. Also Brady, is obviously highly regarded by players and coaches - so if he’s making the push for Johnson, it’s going to be very enticing and Brady will likely do what he’s capable of doing to lure him over.
