Just another day in New Orleans (1 Viewer)

It was the point bclemms was making earlier
I think it should at least part of the discussion of context
I dunno, it strikes me as making excuses for the situation the city is in rather than making a genuine effort to fix it.

To be clear, I'm not saying that the trends in big cities in the south has zero effect, but relative to other factors, it's small.

I don’t think BR cares one bit about the goose sheetting out golden eggs (AKA New Orleans), but what Cantrell does is separate from those problems. Stiffing youth of summer pay, abusing travel perks, expecting the NFL/NBA to give her a a suite in the dome and the arena. birch is crazy, and that’s not BR’s fault.

It never did. Ever.

So there is always a sense of consternation between NO politics and Baton Rouge. Every poltico north of 10 and west of 90, looks upon NO as some derelict with constant sin. They look down, they deride the corruption, all the while, creating a circle of corruption in their respective fifedoms.

So when your city gets snubbed repeatedly for decades upon decades at the State level, no matter who the Mayor is, that City begins to take on a life of its own and create a system that tries to take on State and do its own thing. This goes back decades.

And sadly, N.O. isn't big enough to drag the rest of the state around by the short hairs, like say, Seattle or Portland.

I realized this morning that I moved to New Orleans full time 30 years ago this week. I had been here a lot growing up to visit family but I came here permanently (8 month Katrina evacuation aside) at 22 to begin law school.

There's been a few cycles of good and bad during that time but really the biggest change is that in my 20s all of the dysfunction and crime and crumbling infrastructure and corruption didn't even register with me. I was having the time of my life.

Then I got married and bought a house and had kids and I was like OHHHHH..... damn.

But here I am, having just delivered by youngest to college in TX and I'm still here. At the very least I'm going to try to get back to seeing live music now that we have some downtime. I suppose I have officially become part of the problem because I've pretty much given up on any of the really tough problems ever being addressed. Just gonna ride it out as long as I can.......

I totally get it. Im born and raised here. its part of the allure ( the laissez faire attitude ) Ride it out as long as possible.

i have a good 10-15 years of work left in me. But i fully expect to start winding that down by year 10 with the thought that by 15, ill be where i will be for the remainder. Shoot it may still be here. But like you, i simply wont care about those external things that i cannot control alone.

Im approaching that with my industry ( insurance ) - im tired. And when i get tired, i simply tune out. I love what i do, but the market is dictating now vs consumer dictating market. And its a drain.

BTW- the Thread title says is all, no? " Just another day in New Orleans " lolol.

Not drawing a direct parallel, but I am questioning your analogy- if your kids brought home a 70, you’d probably be a bit upset and you’d question all the reasons your kid brought home a poor grade
If you found out all the other kids in class got a 70, wouldn’t you at least have some questions about the test or the structure of of the class?

That might be your perception but I don't think that's reality. Every place, big or small, has challenges to face - from economic to crime to affordability and so on - but if you're scoring New Orleans a 70, I'd say Austin is bringing home a solid A, in comparison.

I think many cities and towns in Louisiana are struggling much more than a lot of other places, and I don't really know what the answers are.

I don't remember any other administration being this incompetent. Case in point...

I don't remember things being this bad even after Katrina once the city really opened up.

I guess All Star Electric was vindicated in the Hard Rock hotel fiasco?

I'll admit I'm shocked at the selection. I just knew she was going to try to force Woodfork on the Council. Let's see what they have to saw about the selection. I'm just hopeful that, if confirmed, she'll make things better at the NOPD, which should reflect positively on the city.
