Kellen Moore expected to be Saints coach [Feb 10 — Fletcher Mackel: mostly done deal; intro press conference to be later this week] (57 Viewers)

It's hard to judge Moore because of the insane level of talent he has at his disposal.

The best offensive line in the league.

The best running back in the league.

A true #1 receiver in AJ Brown.

A true #2 maybe #1 on some teams in Smith.

A very good TE as well.

Pro bowl caliber QB in Hurts.

That's seriously game breaking amount of talent and he most likely will never have that level of talent ever again.
Now replace Moore with Ben Johnson and it basically mirrors the concerns. But Johnson is considered the next big thing.

This is as good a comment to springboard off as any, but when asked about the nature of his pregame speech, Sirianni mentioned Pacino's speech in Any Given Sunday, said it was "awesome...but it don't work that way". Said his job isn't to inspire but rather to remind the players of what they already know, and said winning usually comes down to being the toughest, the most together, and the most detailed. I found that interesting in light of the discussions that have taken place on this board and what fans want to see in a coach, and relevant to how it depicts the culture Moore is a part of in Philly.

No doubt that I think we as Saints fans have become overly obsessed with having a vocal, in your face, "leader of men" type that hypes up the team as the HC. And I think it's because those were things that we could see that DA obviously lacked. But I think it was his lack of attention to detail, lack of offensive and defensive aggression, lack of ability to relate to the players on a personal level, and failure to correct the small errors that were his true downfall. If he did the rest maybe it wouldn't matter that he was not a dynamic personality?

Sirianni strikes me as the type that creates those personnel connections to players and is authentic with them. That earns him respect along with his knowledge of the game. I think you are right that is more than likely the approach Moore will take if he comes here.

In the end there are many ways to lead and being loud with a dynamic personality isn't the only one. Some of the great coaches were quiet, "smartest guy in the room" types, i.e. Bill Walsh, Belichick, Tom Landry, Mike Shanahan, etc. And we see it today in guys like O'Connel. Of course there are the dynamic guys like Dan Campbell.

I don't really disagree with anything your saying, but everything in the NFL is a calculated risk. Most coaches only get one shot at being an HC and so it behooves him to at least look at other options.

Like I said, I think Moore will take the job, I just think it's stupid for him to not consider all the possibilities.

Maybe he has considered those possibilities and feels better about the situation here? Or doesn't want to gamble on the unknown? Hell, it's even possible he might be excited about the challenges he'll face here.

He did pretty well in Dallas too where as always the talent is solid but overrated by media.

2019 - #1 offense, #2 passing, #5 rushing, #6 scoring

2021 - #1 offense, #2 passing, #9 rushing, #1 scoring

2022 - #11 offense, #4 passing, #9 rushing, #4 scoring

*2020 - Dak missed all but a few games - #17 offense, #8 passing, #17 rushing, #17 scoring

I hear ya, and I can agree with THAT! If the Eagles had lost, I think it would have been very tempting to run it back and try for the Lombardi again. Winning changed the calculus, IMO. Unless Saints do something monumentally stupid, he's on his way!

All coaches are somewhat dependent on talent. But they also make talent better than they are. Hurts had what is probably his best year with Moore. And while he's a great all around QB, he's not a great passes and as ELIAS pointed out seldom throws to the middle of the field. Plus, the game plan and play calling has been impeccable regardless of the talent executing it.

We also shouldn't forget that the Philly offense fell apart in the second half of last year despite all that talent (minus Saquon) and Moore came in, fixed it, and took it to a much higher level.

Beyond that, he did a great job in Dallas which likely had less talent.

Thoughts on maybe Jamar Cain as DC? He’s SP and Vance Joseph’s D line coach. Denver led the league in sacks. He’s got a lot of coaching experience, a little run with LSU as well. I know KM likely already has someone in mind maybe even a position coach at Philly or a college coach.

TBH I’m perfectly fine with going back to the philosophy of “hey we can drop 50 on you, now try to out score us”. SP survived for years with that philosophy and horrible defenses. Yes, we had DB9, that is our most glaring need but I think KM has his own plan for our QB situation. Something tells me we will be able to generate points next year. We just need an opportunistic defense again.

DA is like our very own 28-3, the sad gift that keeps on giving.
laugh all you want, when saints were most healthy, we beat the brakes off 2 teams and lost by 3 at home to eventual super bowl champs who destroyed kansas city and finished post season play with an per game average margin of victory of 17 points.

I’m ready for it to be done so Moore can start assembling his staff and getting on with what needs to be done. He’s got a big job ahead of him but after seeing his unit’s performances in the playoffs it’s hard not to be excited. Hopefully Loomis does what he did with Payton - let his HC tell him what wants and needs and just have Loomis figure out how to pay for it. Loomis being solely in charge of player/personnel decisions has not worked out well.

Yeah i'm not disagreeing with anything you said. Moore is a fun option for the next HC and im definitely excited.

It's just worth noting that this Eagles offense is stacked on levels we haven't often seen in the history of the NFL and that makes it a little difficult to judge.
