We need bodies for sure. AK is going to need some help.
With Williams, TH7, Robinson and Mims, not to mention the rookie UDFA from ULL, I’m not concerned. … At least not yet ... if KM is out longer term, than you're right and we do need another camp body at least.

Call the Bears. I think Khalil Herbert can be had for a late round pick. They're all about D'Andre Swift and Rochon Johnson now. Herbert is a decent back, 5-9, 212 pounds.

Maybe the Pack is ready to part with AJ Dillon now that they have Josh Jacobs and Marshawn LLoyd. AJ has never really panned out, but I think he could benefit from a change of scenery and opportunity. He's a real tank at 6 foot, 245.

Round 1-3 is considered high draft capital for running backs in today's NFL.
Yeah, I probably didn’t think that through enough before I made that comment.

But still, I’m less judgmental of taking a chance on a high-upside guy at 3 than I am at 1 or early 2.

Teams that whiff on Top 100 picks are typical teams that miss the playoffs. He was selected at 71, a high 3rd pick.

I also believe he could blossom in Coach K’s offense, but he’s shown to be injury prone as a Pro.
That is a totally false statement.

Almost half the Super Bowl Champions in the history of the NFL did not get starting minutes from their 1st draft selection in their rookie season.

Meh.

You've got $1 dollars(20th pick in the draft) in your pocket and you go to a store with the intentions of grabbing a box of cereal prior to a hurricane. Problem is you're competing with other people (teams) doing the same thing. You arrive a late (Outside the top 15 picks) and most of the quality items are gone. For example, instead of Kellog's cereal(top 15 talent) there's only the great value cereal left. But then you see it...a box of Frosted Flakes(Top 13 talent)...sitting way in the back. Problem is, the reason it's there is the box is open, and the bag has a little tear in it (slight injury history, or questionable character concerns).

You take it to the front, and while the cereal is regularly priced at $1.25, the owner is willing to give it to you for 75 cents. If you really have a preference for that cereal, you likely take the discount and walk out the store feeling lucky. Yes, there's a high chance it's stale...but there's a chance it's not and because you started the night at a disadvantage (fewer picks than other teams, or drafting late) you saw a potential bargain that you otherwise wouldn't have had a shot at, and you take it.

The Saints, since 2006 have had a top 15 pick only 6 times, not counting trade ups. They've picked in the top 5 only once in that time span (2006) not counting Sed Ellis.

It makes 100% logical sense why they take chances on players that otherwise they wouldn't have access to...because if you hit (Ryan Ramczk, Bryan Bresee etc) you hit big and if you miss, you got him at a discount anyway. Sure, they could take the great value cereal and end up with a steady great value player level player, but this is a talent driven business, so they go after the more talented players despite them having some issues.

It logically makes sense from their standpoint and as long as it makes sense, the decisions can be justified. It's when they do things that don't make sense that are questionable, but passing on players you aren't interested in because they don't fit what you're looking for is completely plausible.

I digress

Overall, a pretty good analogy. I would have chosen a box of Corn Pops over the Frosted Flakes when choosing a Kellog's brand item to make your point.

Afterall, Corn Pop was a Bad Dude. The last thing you would want to end up with is a Flake. :biglol:

I would never consider a 3rd round pick a "high" round pick.
Don’t kid yourself. The number 71 pick is worth 235 points on the trade chart. That’s good enough to move from the bottom of the second round at pick 64 all the way to the 40th pick in the draft. High round pick carries great value.
Or you could trade it at 71 and move all the way to the 43rd slot.

The Saints may find themselves searching the waiver wire or the veteran free agent route after cutdown to secure the depth at the RB position.

Miller will need to return to camp and prove himself with some meaningful reps at some point. If he can't stay healthy, he may find himself placed on IR until he can. I don't see the Saints giving up on him yet. He obviously has talent, but you can't help the club while you're in the tub. Mims looks to be the guy who is making a case for himself to make the team. He has been shining so far in camp and with Miller hurt he has been getting more reps in practice than he otherwise would have. I haven't heard much about Robinson or Kibodi to this point making any plays that have them standing out. Beyond the free spirit character of Williams, is he just another guy or is he a player that can get it done?

The Saints will host the 49ers for at least one joint practice on August 15th, 3 days ahead of their preseason matchup game on August 18th, 2024.

The 49ers depth chart at RB has Christian McCaffrey as the undisputed starter with Elijah Mitchell as his primary backup. He rushed for 961 yards as a rookie but has missed 18 games the past 2 years. The team expected Issac Guerendo to compete to be the main backup this year. He pulled a hamstring last week and is expected to miss several weeks. The 9ers also have Jordan Mason on the roster. He was an undrafted free agent in 2022 and hasn't gotten many opportunities, but he has shined when his number has been called. He has averaged 5.6 yards per carry so far in his career which is higher than anyone else on their roster. He has been shinning so far in camp and is making a play to be the main backup to McCaffrey. One of the 3 backs behind McCaffrey may not make the 53-man roster and could be traded or be subjected to the Turk on cutdown day. These RBs will be ones to keep an eye on when the Saints scrimmage and play the 49ers in preseason. Of course, Klint Kubiak is familiar with all of them. He already knows who's who and what they can do.

Here are some backs that could be had from other teams. You can bet there are several other teams that will cut some backs that may be better than the last back on the Saints roster as they head into the regular season. Hopefully our own guys will show they belong.

There are also a number of free agent veteran RBs still available on the open market. Dalvin Cook, Latavius Murray, Kareem Hunt, Matt Breida, Melvin Gordon are some of those out there with plenty of experience. Do any of them have any gas left in the tank? Most of them won't get signed until after week 1 of the regular season so that the team signing them won't have to guarantee their salary for the entire season.

Who is fooling who? Its a pick with potential upside....

2017 Dan Feeney
2018 Royce Freeman
2019 Dre'Mont Jones
2020 Justin Madubuike
2021 Aaron Robinson
2022 Velus Jones

Had high hopes for him. He showed some quickness and power at times last season. I’d hate to see him get cut. We will never hear the end of it if Spears tears it up in Tenessee.
Miller will be on the opening day roster and big a contributer to the running game along with Kamara and Williams

Bub Means will be on the opening day roster and will contribute to the passing game.

This roster is being managed as it prepares for the season opener and a hamstring and or shin injury is not going to out at risk talented players because a lesser player was more available during camp.

I doubt that he gets cut, but hopefully he can stay healthy somehow.
