Lance Briggs - Now Visiting Tampa [M E R G E D] (1 Viewer)

With the depth in this years draft at Lber, I'm not sure I'd want to break the bank on Briggs. Rivers could be had for much less and be just as good a player from Day 1....and we know he'll be there at 10.

After Briggs heard how much they were paying Faine, he got his butt over to Tampa as fast as he could.

On Espn. Boo

I hate to complain, but why not add this to the existing thread on Briggs? This is one of the reasons the board gets littered with unnecessary threads. Besides, I had already reported this development over an hour ago after reading it on the message board of the Bears' official site. If you report it in the existing thread on Briggs, you would see that.

The Bucs have met with just about everybody or will be...

They don't even need Briggs though. They have Cato June at WLB, Ruud at MLB, and Brooks who is the SLB (but has some years left), and a promising LB in Quincy Black.

But I still don't like of potentially seeing him twice a year.

I know there is a lot of euphoria over the Vilma deal. But if we end up this FA period with him as our centerpiece signing, then I am going to be extremely disappointed. The bottom line is he is "damaged goods". I have high hopes that he will fully recover, but there is no guarantee. Our defense needs a lot more help than that, especially with MM's injury. There are times to be bold and this is one of them. Asante looks to be an Eagle, our FO needs to step up and bring Briggs to the B&G.

I can somewhat understand not overpaying for Samuel although he would have been a nice pickup. There are rumors that his deal is going to be worth as much as $13.5 per season although we know that's probably not real money. But if Briggs goes to Tampa, I am going to be VERY upset. You don't break the bank but you have to show that you are serious about contending. Of course, I am MINDFUL that free agency is far from over and has just begun. There is a lot that the Saints can do prior to the draft. But if we think that adding Vilma is enough, to me, that would be a huge mistake. Adding Briggs would solidify our linebacking corp and make that a strength on a defense that has been ineffective. The move would also justify the signing of Randall Gay who is a better fit for a zone scheme. If Shanle remains at WLB, we are not going to be able to run as much zone as we would like as he does not have the speed and range for that. Of course, we could run zone and just allow him to be a liability. Signing Briggs also would mean that our safeties do not have to constantly play in the box and could play over-the-top coverage. But if we allow Briggs to get away and sign either Gay (who's a steady but not spectacular player) or, even worse, Jaques Reeves, this is the same ole story being retold. And we all know how that story has ended for us.

This is not a doom and gloom post. I am optimistic that the Saints will make the right moves. Maybe I am prisoner of hope. I also recognize that you cannot sign everyone and just because you're interested in a player does not mean that the player is interested in you. But you cannot suggest that you are going to add an impact player and only add Vilma, who's great when healthy but, otherwise, is coming a major injury and remains a question mark. I think the Saints have done their homework on him and he should be fine. It's a low risk/high reward trade since we traded a conditional 3rd or 4th for him in 2009. But he cannot be the end-all of impact players we plan to bring in prior to the draft, especially if the reports of us wanting to send a #2 to the Giants for Shockey are true.

I agree.

So far, we have resigned a recurrently injured Brian Young, "Mr.Never attack the ball" Mark Simoneau, and a snafued Vilma.

It's imperative that we do much more than that.
The great thing is, I surmise they will.

We're trying

Apparently it bares repeating. These are not mindless automatons. It takes two parties to come to a contract. Free Agents have to want to come here back.

Obviously we're trying very hard. Maybe some of you need to accept the fact that, frankly, lots of Free Agents just don't want to come here.

Maybe some posters need to accept the fact that frankly,90% of the wonderful fans on this site know:

1.It takes two sides to make a deal happen.
2.Several free-agents would rather play elsewhere.

I'm sure that not having state income taxes helps teams like Tampa. I'm sure the idea of living in Florida also helps draw free agents.

I'm a little confused as to why no one seems to be "the frontrunner" for Briggs. Is he way overrated by us and the media? Seems strange that no team is attached to "having to have him".

I wonder if it has to do with the depth at LBer coming out this year.
