Lance Briggs - Now Visiting Tampa [M E R G E D] (2 Viewers)

I know there is a lot of euphoria over the Vilma deal. But if we end up this FA period with him as our centerpiece signing, then I am going to be extremely disappointed. The bottom line is he is "damaged goods". I have high hopes that he will fully recover, but there is no guarantee. Our defense needs a lot more help than that, especially with MM's injury. There are times to be bold and this is one of them. Asante looks to be an Eagle, our FO needs to step up and bring Briggs to the B&G.

Same here. :9:

Get at least one big name, starting, type guy before the draft.

I am starting to be optimistic about our linebacker group. Actually I would love to get a big OLB capable on blitzing from the outside. Two big linebackers to play on Vilma's sides makes sense to me.

Actually, worst case scenario is that we may grab Rivers (who is a good rusher) in the first round if we can't get one of the tackles or corners (and I think we will). I also think that there will be very interesting choices on the second round and we may have good chances to grab a starter there.

Now about Shockey, the second round choice, for what I have read is pure speculation, we are not certain that it is the price the saints are willing to pay for him.

With the depth in this years draft at Lber, I'm not sure I'd want to break the bank on Briggs. Rivers could be had for much less and be just as good a player from Day 1....and we know he'll be there at 10.

He'll be there at 10 if you want to draft to way before his value. This draft is NOT deep at LB. Rivers is the best of a mediocre class. He's no where near as talented as the top LB from last year. If we move down, then sure. Then, after Rivers there's a drop off in talent. Yeah, a drop off in talent from the top player who himself is a drop off in talent from the top LBs last year! This is a weak class of LB bunched together and indiscriminate from each other.
Rivers close to Briggs on day 1. seriously?

I agree that Rivers will not be as good on day 1 as Briggs at WLB but I would prefer to see Rivers on the Saints and use the other financial resources available to improve DT and CB.

Briggs wants a mountain of money to play a position that really doesn't warrant $10+ million dollars per year. He played in a system where the WLB was used differently than in New Orleans. That's not to say that he couldn't do it but he may not be as good in the Saints scheme. We also have to take into consideration that he will no longer have the luxury of playing behind Tommie Harris, next to Brian Urlacher and in front of Mike Brown. He will be, more or less, on his own in New Orleans and he has yet to show that he can handle it. Rivers has proven nothing but he would cost less and has fewer miles on him and the savings can be used elsewhere.

(Off subject)I know everyone is worried about Vilmas knee but if what I just read on another thread, and ESPN, he did not have micro fracture surgery he just had some bone chips removed from his knee. Either way he started jogging a couple of weeks ago and seems to be on track for a full recovery. I have alot of faith in the saints medical evaluators, they have earned it

Eeyore, the problem with that strategy is you have a far better chance to improve DT and CB in the draft right now than you do in free agency. You could add Briggs right now, draft Ellis or Dorsey in the first and get a guy like Flowers or Patrick Lee or Tracy Porter in the second. Of course, this is assuming you also sign either Florence or Gay at CB.

Now, if we wait to get Rivers in the draft, who will cost a first rounder, and let's say that we do get either Florence or Gay, what DT will we get that can be a difference maker? You can argue Stroud but he's being linked to Buffalo and Atlanta right now. Plus, we would have to make a trade for him, which means we are giving up picks. If we have to give up, say, a second, then that prevents us from using the second round to grab another CB since we will likely need to add two given McKenzie's injury.

So, I think while it is true that Rivers would cost less (and I like Rivers a lot), I just believe that adding Briggs makes more sense in terms of allowing us to address other critical needs on our defense.

Finally, I am not going sweat the fact that Briggs is visiting Tampa. Charles Grant visited them last year. It means nothing. Tampa could be trying to drive up the price we may have to spend on him. Right now, they have Brooks, Rudd and June and a guy name Black waiting in the wings. So, I think the Briggs thing is more for effect although you can never be too certain.

Anyone wonder if Brook and Briggs could co-exist ? Both wants to be the undisputed leader of the D#. Some of the Bucs fans seem to think that signing Briggs would mean that Brook would be gone....

Brooks is a non-factor I would think. He's gotta be near retirement.

The only problem is Briggs is a Pro-Bowl OLB that plays every down and the remaining crop of CBs and DTs don't have comparable value.
