Larry Fitzgerald goes to bat for Sean (1 Viewer)

He basically said if you are the cardinals it’s a no brainer for them. He knows you will have to give up a lot as far as compensation to land him but he is worth it because he is a franchise changer type coach and eluded to how he helped develope drew Brees and drafted guys from smaller schools and developed their talents and also hit on how he developed coaches that worked for him.

If you think we will get 3 you are going to get your feelings hurt. Our best bet would be their 2 this year and a 1st next year.

Eh. I mean…we will almost definitely not get the #3 pick. But weirder things have happened. And when you think about it, does a rookie Defensive End at #3 raise their chances of winning a Super Bowl more than an actual Super Bowl winning head coach? On paper, that kind of trade would make sense.

When you can, it's best to assign a player to a pick when evaluating a trade like you did.

Jalen Carter or Will Anderson or Myles Murphy

for

Sean Payton

That is what Fitz meant by it being a "No Brainer".

This is why when people say Payton is not worth a top 5 overall pick, I disagreed. He's a proven, well respected commodity amongst the players and immediately turns whatever team he signs with into a destination franchise. I would not be surprised at all if all the teams who passed on Payton are looking for another head coach in 2-3 years.

And we've seen how poorly ALL teams draft -- success rate fo 50% and QBs dropping to Mr. Irrelevant. A Top 5 pick for a coach like Payton IS a non-brainer. I wish the Saints could trade for him (meaning that he wanted to come back to NOLA.)

We have people here demanding the 3, and cardinals "insiders" saying the saints have no leverage and they're only willing to give up a third.

So... about right.
The Cardinals are the ones with no leverage. Michael Bidwell is just like his father, cheap. A 3rd round pick for a future HofF coach SB winning HC with a 63% winning percentage? They’ve lost their minds. I don’t blame Payton. I don’t need you. You need me if you want to win immediately.

Yeah, checks out :)

I do think though that the Cardinals know they have to give up a first round pick, it's something they in theory agreed to before the Saints granted permission to interview. The question just becomes which first rounder. My money (and actually my hope) is on 2024 first and something else this year (3rd rounder?) While their next years might not be as good as #3, it shouldn't be too bad, and between a (fingers crossed) potential coaching change here next year and our own 2024 first rounder that should be good ammo to try and get whoever you want early.

Think about trades we have seen from teams trying to get into the top 3 in the past. It has required MAJOR compensation just to go from like 10 to 3, usually a future first round pick and then some.

If SP is reasonably worth a mid first round pick, then using him to get pick 3 likely requires us to throw in a sweetener.

If it was announced tonight that we are trading SP and next year’s first for pick 3, I honestly would not be upset. I don’t think it is quite understood how high those top 3 picks are valued.

Until some how next year we are demolished by injuries yet again and finish bottom five how would you feel then
