Leah Chase Circle (1 Viewer)

Welp, Leah Chase did not make the cut. She was bumped in favor of "Égalité Circle"

The New Orleans City Council Street Renaming Commission settled Wednesday night on its final recommendation for the traffic circle that once hosted a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee: Égalité Circle.

The proposal, which would actually apply to the circular park surrounding the still-standing pedestal and not to the roadway itself, is perhaps the most debated and closely watched of the commission's recommendations. The suggestions now go to the City Council, which will decide what changes to make to 34 streets and three parks that were named for Confederate leaders and supporters of segregation.

They must have discovered a bad tweet from Leah Chase or something.

This pretty much so will ensure that people continue to call it Lee Circle. They needed a familiar, easy, and popular name that would make people want to use the new name. People are not going to know how to pronounce that name and they just won't use it.

I was having this discussion with someone at work. She was saying "they are removing history" by renaming Lee Circle (she is also very much against removing Lee statue).
I asked her to tell me some information on Robert E Lee other than he was Confederate General. She had nada. So i said, if that statue/name of street helped with people remembering history, it doesn't sound like its working. Maybe people should learn history by actual learning and not from reading a plaque from a statue.

Did Toussaint Circle ever get mentioned? Double-duty name that can commemorate both N.O. musician and icon Allen Toussaint, and Haitian slave-revolt leader Toussaint L'Ouverture.

that last part is interesting. I seem to remember history books saying that the slave revolt was the largest reason that Napoleon turned his attention away from the Americas. He needed the island for a launch pad in his objective to expand here. Selling Louisiana followed not long after I think.
