McAllister's deal proves there's no loyalty in NFL (1 Viewer)

Deuce signed a fair deal and got paid a fair rate. Things change. It's a business.

I think this deal showed loyalty on both sides. What we saw here was two parties working together instead of letting their ego get the best of them. You always see a player or a team get fed up with these negotiations because neither party is on the same page. At least the FO and Deuce let cooler heads prevail and worked out a deal that benefits everyone, including us, the fans.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't Deuce have a choice in whether or not he would agree to any terms of a contract renegotiation? He will turn 30 this year; he's blown out both knees. Those are two strikes against him. Like it or not, the owners and shareholders in a team are in it to make money. Yes, they do make an unbelievable amount of it, but that's called capitalism. The team has to make sure it is investing wisely in its future personnel.

That said, I hope Deuce makes all the money available to him, but I doubt he will be hurting financially in any case. Deuce's loyalty to the team is admirable, and the team could have easily cut him and moved on.

I'm not sure where your problem is with this.

I love Deuce. I've met Deuce. Deuce went to my alma-mater.

But Deuce has been rewarded for what he's meant to this team. Deuce has collected close to 8 million dollars for seasons he didn't really play in due to injury. And Deuce has already collected 4 million dollars when there was no guarantee he would bounce back from his first ACL injury.

And now he's set to collect more millions despite being older and going on ACL injury #2. Most NFL teams would have cut Deuce by now. Deuce has a lot of reasons to be really appreciative to the New Orleans Saints (and vice-versa of course). Deuce stands to make significantly more money here, next season, then he'd get as a free agent if the Saints cut him.

I think Deuce and New Orleans have both treated each other right.

Don't forget that he also had microfracture surgery along with the ACL... we'll see in the coming months, but Spam is right... Deuce and the team have treated each other right.

I never get mad at a player for "wanting to feed his family" because if they under preform the team will restructure. There are exceptions. Several have mentioned Colston not getting paid yet and how productive he has been but last year before the season he did not complain because he knew he has a little while on his contract and they would get it done once it gets closer to the end of his contract. Trust me his agent is talking to the Saints.

Grant is another one. He got his huge contract last year and then under preformed but because he just got that contract the front office has not gone to him ans asked him to restructure. If it were closer to the end of his deal like Dueces was then yeah they would go talk to him because there would be concerns.

All teams do this and all players should want the most money they can get because the front office is going to try and save as much money as they can.

End the end this is a business. For instance say you are the only person in your area that can do a certain task and their were a ton of companies that wanted someone like you but they could not find anyone. Then you would go to your boss and say "I deserve a raise because I am the only person who can do this and everyone wants me yada yada yada" They will either give you a raise or you will quit and go work for the highest bidder. Then say in a few years there are a ton of people doing what you do now and your company realizes they are over paying you. They will come to you and say "we have some budget cuts. you will need to take a pay cut or be fired" You take the cut or you get fired.

Same thing in football. Yes I know they have contracts but there are things you can do to get out of a contract just like if you had a contract at work you could do things to get them to release you from it

First let me preface by saying I'm a huge Deuce fan but the whole premise of the article is wrong......where is the Saints loyalty to Deuce?......well....asking him to restructure after his second knee injury instead of cutting him outright is the ultimate in loyalty in today's NFL. The "smart" move would have been to let his roster bonus pass thus "releasing" him. Then re sign him to a cheap vet minimum deal. That happens all the time, just look at the Bucs and Kevin Carter. But instead the Saints FO did the "right" thing and negotiated with Deuce before the roster bonus was due. Sorry but if you remove the name Deuce McAllister from the equation and put it like this - what would you be willing to pay a thirty something vet RB coming off knee injuries to both knees? Like I said the Saints showed Deuce as much respect as being a salary cap responsible team will allow.....

The players wanted free agency, and they got it.

Nothing against Deuce. It's obvious he bleeds black and gold. I hope he meets every incentive and more.

This article is spot on. The problem is that the NFL does a better job positioning itself in the media. If players took the time to get good advice and play the media game properly they might not be viewed the way they are.

This is very similar to what happened to Joe Horn. He felt like he had earned is extension. After a season plagued by injuries the Saints said, take a pay cut or you will be released. He took his release. The difference here is that Duece has more class than the Saints and he took the pay cut. Fans will love him for it. Fact of the matter is that Duece has proved to be a shrewd business man and probably is more worried about stability in his living situation and being around his family then he is about the money. He does not have the arrogant bravado of a Joe Horn.

The NFL holds all the cards in the cuirrent CBA and that is why they are the most profitable sports league in the US. That is also why we are heading toward a long labor dispute in a few years.

I saw that article. I think the guy is way off the mark. If they don't renegotiate the only other outcome would have been for the Deuce to be cut. They found a way to reduce the risk if he doesn't recover fully, but to pay him in full if he does. That's disloyal? I just don't see it.

His rookie contract paid him for being a first round pick before he ever played a down. Guys like Colston are the guys that get *^*&^* over.
It goes to show that ALL 1st round rookies should be paid equal GUARANTEED 1 year contracts with heavy incentives. Less money is then paid to 2nd rounders then 3rd rounders and so on ending at UDFA's. Years 2-4 should be renegotiated with the drafting team just as RFA's are now with all the same provisions in place for matching offers;transition/franchise tags;compensation etc.
Then after 4 years UFA just like it works at present.

That'd fix much

What about when Horn left us for the Birds? Where was his loyalty?

Horn was released. Why be loyal to the team that released you? If your employer fires you, will you still feel a sense of loyalty towards them?
