Meanwhile Sean Payton is Sean Paytoning in Denver {Thread from September Bumped } (6 Viewers)

I mean, I don't think it's trashing Payton to say that he didn't adjust his offense to account for the loss of his Hall of Fame QB or the fact that teams started to play different against his offense. It was no doubt dominant for more than 10 years. But, you have the adjust in the NFL and he didn't appear willing to do that. There is a reason why the constant refrain was "Run the ball Payton" for many years.
It was use of the word good riddance. He also missed the context that I meant good riddance to the scheme, not everything Sean did for this city and team.

He’s also older and that generation views criticism of elders as disrespect. It was either discuss all the good or say nothing at all.

I get it lol, I understand and respect his view and how he got to it 100%. I’m also trolling him a bit too, like id do my dad who’s going threw a time in life where he’s more annoyed than usual.

Kind of how I knew he’d not take the age joke well. It’s all psychology

I’m thankful for what Sean Payton did for us. I was ride or die with him…until his last season here….it was the same thing over and over. I’d watch Pete Carmichael in post games conferences and he could care less. “We just have do better.” Type answers. It was getting to a point o wasn’t even turning on the TV. Dennis Allen becomes HC and I was really pessimistic and Dennis Allen proved that there was a reason to be. It was a very sad time to be a saints fan. For me at least.

But,something changed. They began taking their time with coaching hires and actually making good hiring decisions. I was excited and optimistic. It just felt different. A feeling I hadn’t felt in many years.

We are off to an excellent start and hope it continues. Because this team is fun to watch again.

With that said…it’s kind of funny to watch Sean Payton hire Pete Carmichael and have a disaster of a season appearing to be on the same track 🤣

Who dat!

Yeah Payton just hasn’t adjusted to these modern wrinkles. One knock on Payton was using short passes instead of relying on the traditional run game. That can be effective but being able to run over a team the way Kubiak’s system allows is so demoralizing on an opposing defense. You could see the Cowboys getting flustered and beaten down.

I think the problem for Payton, in addition to the more two high Safeties that Ellias mentioned, is that teams have been putting LBs on the field that are better in coverage and playing more 4-2-5 defenses as a base in response to offenses like Payton's that created mismatches for RBs and TEs by getting them on LBs that can't cover as well. The Shanahan/Kubiak scheme takes advantage of that by using outside zone runs against those DBs in the 4-2-5 and smaller coverage LBs. Eventually NFL teams will adjust again an it will be time for systems like Payton's to shine again.

I see your point. Which is valid it was a mistake to not adjust. There many games where he refused to adjust so it must be a personality thing with him. Some people are stubborn as I am very stubborn so that type of thinking or trait works against you more often than not.

Let Denver win against every NFC team they play… as long as we beat them in the Dome later this year. That’s all I care about.

His system works with a completely manic HOF clutch QB.

Most systems do. Remember when Shan was as offensive genius with John Elway as the QB?

That system Shanahan ran with Elway in Denver is essentially the same system that Kubiak runs with the Saints now. There are some tweaks and added window dressing with motion, but it's the same basic offensive system.

Funny how when a coach or player leaves no what the terms of their departure all of the past achievements and all they have done for their franchise is just trashed for no good reason.

I did not remember seeing this type of opinion when we were winning he was a genius.
Can never forget Payton for winning us a SB, but on the turn he cost us potentially 2-3 more also.

My guess.
He retires and gets a ceremonial role in the front office.
Ambassador or something.

When Payton retires, I think he's going to want a GM job somewhere just like his mentor Bill Parcels. But, personally, I would not want Payton the GM. Payton head of scouting offensive players, maybe, but not as a GM.
