N/S Payton critiques old Broncos staff, says Jets are setting themselves up for a hard fall, etc. (1 Viewer)

How many bailed mid contract?
Lombardi resigned to go to Washington.
Parcells retired and then came back.
The Cowboys and Johnson agreed to “part ways.”
Holmgren resigned from the Packers, one of the cornerstone franchises to sign a eight year contract with Seattle.
Vermiel retired and then suddenly came back to the Chiefs.

All true, but for Vermeil there was a gap of 13 years between when he retired from Philly and came back to coach the Rams.

Everything in that article reminds me what a great coach Payton is and I'm shocked at how so many here are forgetting the things he did when he first got here. Allow me to run through it:

"Sean Payton says Broncos analytics 'on a different level here"

This is not a (direct) dig on Saints analytics. It's to put the public spotlight on a well-funded analytics department that needs to perform better and it's a way of holding them to account publicly.

"I’m going to be pissed off if this is not a playoff team,”

This communicates to the team that he expects them to make the playoffs. Compare this to the "take it day by day", "punch-the-clock" approach Allen takes. What are the expectations for the Saints? Does anyone even know? Show up and hope for the best?

"It doesn’t happen often where an NFL team or organization gets embarrassed,” Payton said. “And that happened here. Part of it was their own fault, relative to spending so much (expletive) time trying to win the offseason – the PR, the pomp and circumstance, marching people around and all this stuff."

Do we not remember how much of the pomp and fluff Payton eliminated when he came here? Remember that Benson used to be _selling cars to the players_ after practice? Payton knows how to set boundaries with owners. Who gives a blip if they're embarrassed? They _should be embarrassed_.

With respect to Wilson, the only logical decision is to clean the slate, set boundaries and rebuild his confidence. Everything said there reflects that.

"Everything I heard about last season, we’re doing the opposite,” Payton said."

"When these baby iguanas are hatched, they pop their heads out of the sand and they’ve got to get to the cliffs,” he said. “There are runner snakes all around, and they feed off the babies. So, the message is, ‘We’ve got to hit the ground running. There’s a sense of urgency. Let’s hit the ground running.’ ”

These sorts of visual anchors and phrases are hallmarks of good motivational coaching and identity building. They're the Broncos, they should be running.

The problem with this is that the majority or good portion of Super Bowl coaches have gone to a different franchise at some point.
Most of them also don't invent BS stories about being burned out or wanting to retire as the factors in why they left and then all of sudden are acting like their former selves, fired up, determined, energized and filled up with gusto and boundless energy and creativity.

Payton might've been "burned out" but it was from being Saints HC, not NFL football, in general. But, as a public sports figure, saying that so bluntly and matter-of-factly would be insulting, and smart-alleky to most of the fanbase who stood by you for so many years, so Payton decided to subtly insult or belittle our intelligences by saying he was burnt out and tired.

We now know he was far from being burnt out and tired. It was sort of the lack of honesty, and transparency that bothered me. When Mora left the way he did and quit midseason in 1996, he wasnt lying or telling a convenient cover story, he really was forking burned out.

Parcells left the Giants because he was burned out. He went to the Patriots and then the Jets.
Lombardi was burned out then went to Washington.
Stram spent some time as a commentator before going to the Saints.

Vermeil left the Rams to go to KC.
Vermeil has actually stated on multiple occasions he made a mistake leaving the Rams after winning Super Bowl XXXIV to take the Chiefs job. When it came to him stepping down as Eagles HC after the 1982 season, dude, Ive talked to quite a few older Eagles fans and they've told me that Vermeil was sleeping in his office for weeks and not going home and he slept next to a projector and his assistants and Eagles players were worried about his mental/emotional/physical health. Vermeil himself even said he almost had a nervous breakdown sitting in his parking lot spot at Eagles training facility/headquarters.

By 1969, Jack, Lombardi's health was not in the best place. In fact, one of the major reasons why he retired from Packers after winning SB II was due to his increasing health problems.

Some of Lombardi's biographers have stated he had cancer when he agrees to become Redskins HC before the 1969 season. Even though Lombardi led Redskins to their first winning season, (7-5-2) in 13 seasons, the collective, cumulative stress hurt and damaged his precarious health even more.

Hank Schramm likely would have succeeded in his 5-year plan to rebuild the Saints team, but taking into consideration how impatient Mecom was and maybe how the game had sort of passed Hank, he never was around to see the fruition of his rebuilding program.

But this talking point of Payton abounding the Saints seems kinda false.
This isn’t like a college coach leaving Western Kentucky to go to USC.
Coaches leave. Championship coaches leave. It’s a part of the League.

I just wished he'd been a little more honest and not insult some individual Saints fans intelligences with his half-arse, not-believable reasons for leaving, which clearly werent true and created some residual bitterness and resentment. It felt like a not-too well-executed con that no one bought as opposed to Jim Mora's reasons for leaving and quitting being understandable because unlike Payton after the 2021 season, he really was burnt out and needed a break.

Payton has gone full gangsta

Don't feel he ditched us...He ditched us
Sean making friends all across the NFL. lol Who among us really believed Sean would stay beyond Drew? Not me! I didn't think he would stay the one year. Living in New Orleans isn't for every one.
