N/S Payton critiques old Broncos staff, says Jets are setting themselves up for a hard fall, etc. (1 Viewer)

I am grateful for the culture change but he rode this horse into the ground. Once Drew was done he was done. To be fair I was tired of him. Tired of trying to be fancy all the time. Throwing when he should be running etc. I also seem to recall yelling at the tv frequently to hurry up to the line and get the play off. His teams seemed to be very lackadaisical.

Drew and SP made each other. It was a perfect storm. Saying that we should have won another championship. I blame that on him. He was the captain of the ship.

I will forever be grateful for that Super Bowl but I don’t care for how he left. I think he gets exposed this year.
To me this a measured, fair take. I don't think SP ever planned to stick around for a rebuild after Drew retired. All indications were that he was going to ride the Drew bus for as long as he could and then bail out. Looking back it was pretty obvious. There was never a plan for life after Brees. He knew he wasn't going to be around to clean up the mess so he traded draft picks for new toys and helped nuke the salary cap. He ran up the credit card and then left town.

It's not so much that he left, it's how he left. I totally understand an older coach not wanting to waste years of his his career trying to rebuild without quality draft assets and a less than ideal cap situation. Rebuilds are hard enough already but then you throw in the fact that he didn't have much to rebuild with, I don't blame him for leaving. But there's a right way to go about it. He tried to snake his way to Miami and got busted. So then it turns into burnout. He didn't even try to hide the fact that he would be back to coach another team as soon as possible.

Then he comes back and basks in the spotlight with the world waiting for him to pick which team he would coach next. To his surprise the Chargers weren't interested and the teams that were interested were awful. After milking all of the attention he could he finally settled on the Broncos and he's been running his mouth ever since. For the life of me I can't understand why Saints fans are rooting for him and the Broncos. Obviously I appreciate what he did for the Saints and I'm sure in time my feelings toward SP will change. But right now I'm not rooting for him and I'm certainly not yelling, "Let's Ride!".

I just wished he'd been a little more honest and not insult some individual Saints fans intelligences with his half-arse, not-believable reasons for leaving, which clearly werent true and created some residual bitterness and resentment. It felt like a not-too well-executed con that no one bought as opposed to Jim Mora's reasons for leaving and quitting being understandable because unlike Payton after the 2021 season, he really was burnt out and needed a break.
He was honest. He said he would most likely return in his farewell press conference.

He also bashed our food didn’t he?

Yeah, that part came after he got busted trying to worm his way to Miami and after he got exposed, his rationale for departing was "burn out". Also, as Drago eloquently explained above, he had no intention of staying for a rebuild post-Drew, so he ran up the credit cards and left Saints FO, and his successor with not a lot of talented, skilled players and began running his mouth even at his farewell press conference that he would likely return to coaching.

I agree with Drago, it is how he left that leaves a tinge of residual bitterness because his reasons for leaving were bullshirt, and self-serving but he knew that wouldn't be received very well by MSM sports outlets so he came up with a bunch of half-arse excuses as to why he didnt want to be Saints HC anymore.

He also left his successor in a bit of a bind that he's only recently been able to dig himself out of, at least on paper.

But what would you rather happen?
Stay with the Saints his entire career? Unless you’re with the Steelers or BB, that type of run hasn’t happened since the 80s.
Stay until there is a real riff like Jones and the Cowboys?
Just stay retired? Like I’ve shown, the majority of coaches leave for a second run at some point.
Leave and badmouth the organization?
Watch Payton go a few losing seasons only to leave and find even greater success like Reid leaving the Eagles?

I think his intent was to motivate his players by saying that the issue was not the players, trying to give confidence to them. But it was a pretty stupid thing. There are better ways. Thought he was smarter than that.

I don't know exactly. He was going to leave at some point, post-Brees retirement. I think most Saints fans at SR.com realize he wasnt going to be here for a messy, perhaps unsuccessful rebuild. Thats understandable and I can live with that, the NFL is a business, first and foremost. He could've just left with a little more class and not given some Saints fans and reporters the sense or notion that he was glad to be leaving and couldn't wait to coach somewhere else soon. Like coaching the Saints had become this "massive burden" he couldn't longer handle and it was a relief to be free again.

That sort of exit does run some people the wrong way even if its unintentional.

But, you're also right, in a certain sense. What would or could have been the right way for Payton to say goodbye and move on to his next coaching challenge?

But other coaches have felt that burden too. It’s been reported that Lombardi felt burdened by being the Packers coach. Then during his year off, decided he missed it by not returning to the Packers, but to Washington.
Jimmy Johnson felt burdened by being the Cowboys coach and Jerry Jones. He ended up in Miami.

I think in Jimmy Johnson's case, the burden was having this meglamanical, egotistical, shallow butt crevasse of an owner who could never just stay out of the way, had an elitist, entitlement streak that he felt was being honored sufficiently by thinking he wasnt getting enough of the credit for building the early 90's Cowboys SB dynasty.

Some budding, potential historical sports dynasties can be upended by the stupidest, idiotic of reasons. Jerry Jones had spent literally the last 3 decades of his life as Cowboys owner trying to re-create something he once had and blew it up recklessly and carelessly due to his own arrogance.

So, your points are noted and well-taken.

Very true statement! Hell, the Cowboys won a Superbowl with Switzer......the team was that loaded. Minimum 2-3 more Lombardi's if he doesn't run off Jimmy Johnson.

I know everyone says Payton has always been petty or a smack talker, but while I agree I also seem to remember it being more calculated and he’d actually admonish people for going overboard.

Remember him sending jars of peanut butter and sand to Gregg Williams the week of the Super Bowl?

I get the logic of him saying what he said. He wants to build his team/players up and install a new culture. Yet, I do think burying Hackett and throwing shade at the Jets could come back to haunt him. Of course if he rights the ship in Denver and gets Russ to play better all of this will just add his lore. So it is a gamble but he has always been a gambler.

but I do think Payton of 2009 would send 2023 Payton a jar of sand.

Payton is catching some heat for his comments...

Th ole "walk it back" routine. Predictable. But Sean knew exactly what he was doing......everything is very calculated with him. He accomplished his goal and now has to play like he screwed up.
