New Orleans Pelicans hire Stan Van Gundy (1 Viewer)

I feel better about the hire after hearing Kendrick Perkins say that Marc Jackson or Jason Kidd should have been the hire.
Yeah, the combination of Perkins and the 2 guys who are the last people on Earth I wanted to get the job push this over the top for me. Stan is looking pretty good at this point, haha.

I fancy myself as knowledgeable about NBA matters but I know very little about SVG, reading the above posts eases my mind.

I do recall him getting a bad hand dealt to him to finish out his time in both Miami and Orlando, but I wasn’t aware of his coaching ability.
I lived through the Jeff VG days as a Knicks fan
I’m glad we got the good van Gundy

From what I've read, Gundy is a great strategist (in and out of games), relentlessly hard worker, and employs sound defensive principles. All those things will pay immediate dividends for the team. Reddick respecting him will go a long way towards Zion doing the same, and he seems very teachable. This is a good hire, and I'm relieved we didn't settle for the likes of Jason Kidd, which sends the wrong message if Griffin is truly trying to build a high character foundation from the inside out.

All in all, I really like this. I expect to see much better rotations, and execution on the court. At minimum I think he will get them playing up to their potential by years end.

SVG is also not a great game analyst so he doesn't have a lot to fall back on. That should help him focus. ;) JVG is a better analyst than him but not a better coach.

Any coach that brings discipline to the team is all right with me. Team was wayyy too undisciplined on both sides of the ball with Gentry.

But listening to past players talk about SVG, he might be too far in that other direction. A real grinder of a coach. Thats why Perk thought Kidd or Jackson might be better because he doesn't think players today can handle coaches like SVG.

Hopefully the time off taught him to be more flexible. I know Sean Payton went through that "grinder coach" phase and eventually changed.

Listen to JJ Redick’s take on SVG is enough of an endorsement for me.
