New Orleans set to finish 2019 with lowest murder rate since 1986 (1 Viewer)

wait...then that would mean Nextdoor tends to the hyperbolic and hysterical *shocked face*

but seriously, i assume this is part of a national trend like a similar change in crime in the mid 90s - or is NO asymptomatic?

I'll take it. Who is this guy?

I do not mean to downplay the good news of a drop in the murder rate but the city is currently plagued by a massive spike on car break-ins. Uptown, Irish Channel, Lakeview, Mid-City... entire blocks are waking up every day to having all their car windows smashed. Supposedly looking for guns/money/cash but I think half of it is just anger/sport, I don't know.

But's it everywhere. My block has been hit twice in the last 6 weeks. They only got me once, but my neighbor got it both times. Because of the NOPD/DOJ consent decree the police will not engage in a chase anymore, so it seems word is out that - outside of a stray homeowner with a gun getting invovled - there is about 0.0% chance of getting stopped or arrested.

Unfortunately one woman was killed recently trying to stop a break-in as it happened. --> https://www.wwltv.com/article/news/...-say/289-77653588-3664-4ec4-a56f-d936935c052b

That is good news but is it possible they are coding some murders differently to make the numbers lower?

30 people per 100,000! Holy shoot. I’ve always wanted to live in / around NOLA (and still do, of course), but the rate down here in Australia is 1 per 100,000. That’s significant. Any indication as to the US national average?

Between 5-6 per 100K. NOLA still has an astronomically high murder rate, though as noted in the OP the trend is positive.

It would be interesting to see the breakdown of victims known to the perpetrator, although I am not certain that information is necessarily available.

This data is somewhat dated now, but the breakdown here is interesting:

Only 10% of victims were strangers to the perpetrator and only 13% of the overall number of homicides occurred by gunshot wound. I imagine the numbers might be slightly different in NOLA/the US.

It’s true
I was talking with a friend who’s car got hit right around Audubon - I was reminded of what it was like having a car in NYC in the 90s
Everyone had detachable faces for the da audio system - clubs that locked the steering wheel - glove boxes left open showintnthere was nothing in the car - notes informing would be thieves that nothing is in car
He was saying his friends in SF now also leave their trunks open and doors unlocked to avoid being ‘broken’ into

Same
There are the anecdotal instances that Sparkle noted about someone confronting vandals, but the vast number of murders are victim/perp knowing each other and happening in ‘expected’ parts of town

Exactly. Which is why - for residents - the drop in murder rate is welcome but not really noticeable compared to the rash of smashed windows.

My neighborhood feels much less safe than it used to despite the drop in homicides (although we also had a homicide near me this year for the first time ever I can recall).

it makes you feel really alive though when you are once again not in that number. And I have also benefited from lower rent rates by living in some of these areas where it’s the worst. It’s a double edged sword ( or double barrel gun more likely )
