Speculation Pat Kirwan thinks Aaron Glenn will be next Saints head coach (3 Viewers)

I would rather an offensive coach and also a coach that hasn't coached with the Saints before.

I don’t think it’s like that anymore.
We’re in a post Sunday Ticket era. You can become a superstar from any market.

Yep. The only way a coach becomes a "star" is by winning Super Bowls and that can be done anywhere in the NFL. I think "big markets" matter more to players than coaches and it's less important to players now outside of maybe the LA market. Frankly, if I'm a coach, I want a market with a docile media that doesn't come for my head after every loss. That's not NY, Dallas, or any of the larger markets.

LOL. I don't ever believe anything Moscona says. He's just trolling for views. He's welcome to his opinion but it's no more valid than yours, mine, or anyone else on this board.

Regardless, of what Moscona thinks, an argument can be made for any of the jobs being good or bad depending on what a coach is looking for. Some might consider the Bears the top job because of Williams. But, Williams has been struggling recently so maybe a coach doesn't think he's going to be a great player and doesn't want to be stuck with him as the starting QB for 3 years. The Jets have Rodgers who has and will get a coach fired. Who wants to be stuck with him as your starting QB and who wants to have the constant heat of the NY media? And Jacksonville is pretty much so locked into Lawrence as their starting QB. He's the 4th highest paid QB in the NFL and he's basically only as good as Derek Carr, or maybe worse, who is the 18th highest paid QB in the NFL.

The advantage the Saints have is an organization who has shown it is willing to be patient, even too patient at times, a solid starting QB, a good organization with an owner willing to pay to build the team the coach wants, and a solid base roster that really should have won 8 or 10 games this year if not for a bad head coach and injuries. The only real downside to the Saints job is it's a small market (attractive to some) and our cap situation. But the cap can be clean in two years and this organization has shown for years that the cap doesn't stop them from giving a coach the players they want. And that's where being an organization with patience pays off.

So, they are all more or less close to each other depending on what you want. No available job, unless Andy Reid retires, is going to be a great situation. They will all have advantages and disadvantages. Which is better will really depend on the specific coach unless some unusually great job comes open which doesn't seem likely right now.
This isn't about Matts opinion, he presented facts. Current roster, salary cap and ownership are the top three considerations followed by the smaller aspects like market, fan base, job location. The biggest IMO is the salary cap. You can own a Ferrari but if you do not have gasoline its not going anywhere. The salary cap is the gasoline. We're not completely inflexible but we are definitely handcuffed to a degree. What id say to defend your point to this argument is that we've been running our cap this way for years and that we're sort of the masters of living on the edge. We saw that we were indeed on the edge, when we lost Mccoy and the glass house shattered. Anyway, we're going to have to convince Ben Johnson that we can still manage a competitive roster in our current cap situation. He may say, spare me the word salad, im going to the team that has the most gasoline.

You can make an argument market matters in MLB or NBA because most of your games are local.
But all of the NFL’s contracts are national.
If Rizz or Glen start 8-2 or 7-3, they are in the main slot.

And I explained why I think Moscoan is wrong about those things. He didn't present "facts". He gave opinions based on how he views the facts.

I frankly think the salary cap stuff is way overblown. This team has for 20 or so years given it's head coach the team they wanted regardless of what the cap looked like to outsiders. And now they can have it fully clean in 2 years or less. We do need to stop singing older players to long deals with void years, but the idea that we are in "cap hell" has been said for almost 10 years straight and it never turns out to be really true. Once Ram, Demario, and Cam are off the books, which is likely to happen after this year, our cap situation is fine. If I were looking at the Saints job, I would be far more concerned with their drafting and draft strategy, which could likely be changed if you hire the right HC. Anway, the point is how good each job is depends on a number of different things not just how much cap space you have. Weird things like where the coach's wife is from or where their kids go to school come into play sometimes.

The Saints job isn't going to be top of the list for every coach or maybe even most coaches, but it might be for some. Regardless, there is plenty of head coaching talent out there that would take the job and some of them will be great at it. You just have to find the right one.

And just to add, because of Payton and Brees, the franchise is a nationally known commodity now.
You can market the Saints in ways you couldn’t when Hasslet was the coach.

If it aint Rizz, then I want an Offensive HC.

And on this next point I am totally biased...

The Saints just fired an Aggy HC (the Aggiest Aggy ever), and then follow it by bringing in a new Aggy HC?

giphy.webp

So you're saying the Saints should hire Mac Brown or Sarkisian?

But all accounts, Aaron Glenn is an exceptional coach and I think he would be a good hire. I'm pulling for Rizzi and I am in the minority that we give Kubiak an interview if he's interested and Rizzi isn't selected. I really love Kubiak's approach. I'm pulling for whatever keeps him here in the building. I think he will be great with a little more seasoning.

I knew I would need to clarify.

DA and AG were not Head Coaches at Aggy.

Sark and Mack have nothing to do with my point, but if you need a haha, then, haha.

My point is, I do not want a Saints HC who comes from a culture where their football program aint done jack since 1939, and, it's a co-ed school that does not allow female cheerleaders.

It’s interesting that you mention that - because I feel similarly but I’ve noticed a trend in the media lately where pundits are saying that these teams in need of coaches need to reach out and strongly consider former players as their coaches.

The argument being that a former player knows what the player culture is about and understands the fan base and upper management/ player relationships better and has a pride in the franchise.

I’ve heard numerous pundits cite cases like Dan Campbell (former Lion, now Lions coach) and Demeco Ryans (former Texan, now Texans coach) and Jerod Mayo (former Patriot, now Patriots coach).

Well, the ones I’ve heard mention Glenn don’t mention his coaching stint with Saints, only that he was a former player in 08’.

So it’s a weird mental gymnastics to get to that narrative - but I think the reason they are all pushing this narrative is because they want to see Deion Sanders coaching the Cowboys and are almost trying to wish it into existence. The media would lose their collective minds if Jerry were to pull that off.

Anyway, I think Glenn has proven to be a great candidate for a head coaching gig but I’d rather a young offensive minded guy who isn’t so directly from the Payton tree get a shot.

Lol. Sorry to get you all in your fells with your A&M hate. I assumed your post was a joke so I responded in kind but apparently you are serious so you do you.

Oh and horns down.

One positive about Glen is that he’s familiar with the organization, but hasn’t spent decades within it.
Part of the problem with DA is that except for a brief stop in Oakland and Denver, he’s always been in the Saints.
Glen is more of a Campbell guy now.
I do think Aaron Glenn will be better than DA that’s for sure. Maybe not as a DC, but as in connecting with the players.

Have to admit…….that Aggie yell is pretty cringe. Although, I have two cousins that played for them, so I don’t bring it up too much at family reunions 🤣

I disagree. We need to win AND have a Drew Brees type of superstar QB to get back to the level of national games we used to have (5 per year). Or get a coach with a name like Belicheck. Payton didn't want to come here. He wanted the Packers job. Not a large market but a historic team that doesn't need the market. The last time we hired a coach Daboll took the Giants without even looking around.
