Patrick Robinson retiring (1 Viewer)

I feel like this retirement is a result of him not beating out anyone for a starting spot or role in the rotation. It even seems like Ken Crawley had supplanted him. He was struggling to see the field, so it probably took the excitement out of the game. He was left with practicing extremely hard with no time on the field to show for it. Not to mention, he was on his 11th year.

I guess the real question is, why would he participate in training camp then proceed to retire during said training camp. Pretty stupid in my book, you have obviously been thinking about it considering how abruptly your decision was. All you did was waste time, my time, the team's time, your own time, and your coaches time...great timing is the story of the 2021Saints off-season.
I think it's more of he may have thought he still had a year or so in him and wanted to go but found it hard too. I'm sure it was a difficult decision for him. It's interesting b/c he struggled early and his best years were late in his career, esp on the Eagles he found success but glad he came back here to retire a Saint.

Look at Josh Hill, same thing kinda happened to him. He retired thinking he still had more left but those injuries catch up to you and P. Rob and Josh Hill have had some injuries that may just be too much at this pt.

There wouldn't be an acceleration of dead money if he were to be traded now. There is a post June 1 trade clause where the acceleration takes place the following year.
But even then it's $16 million now and $16 million next year.

The Saints simply don't have the cap space to trade MT13. I hope that a 1500 yard, 100 catch, 10 TD season when MT13 comes back will remind people how dominant a receiver he actually is. Maybe then they will forget the annoyance of being unavailable at the beginning of this season.

It's not uncommon. Every year there are training camp retirees, typically older guys around who maybe want to give it one last year but decide their body just doesn't have it for another year.

Believe me, the Saints weren't relying on contributions from P Rob. They've been vocal about a need at corner and that was with him on the roster. If he trotted out at #2 corner to open this season, something would have went very wrong.

This. If P-Rob was in good enough shape physically and mentally to play a big role this year, it's VERY unlikely he'd be retiring right now. We needed corner help before, and we still do.

The way this off-season has gone I won’t be at all surprised to open SR tomorrow and read the headline “Saints Headquarters Burn to the Ground”……
I'm sorry for how hard I just laughed at this.

Nope.

If he were to be traded now his 2021 cap hit would go from 10.1M to 8.9M This tears signing bonus charge) for a savings of 1.2M.

Next year his signing Bonus charge goes to 22.7M but that is 2M less than his combined salary, roster bonus, and 1 years worth of signing bonus.
