Alert! Patriots trade DT Davon Godchaux to the Saints for 2026 7th round pick (97 Viewers)

There's some examples of him read gap 1/2 in this highlight video. He comes off the ball quickly, gets maybe a half yard or a yard deep and then holds. If the ball goes other direction he sheds and gets in on the tackle.

I like the thought of a veteran NT vs a Rookie NT. The young players take time to develop and you did draft a young NT last year that still has room for development.

Good value on the trade. He's a 5mil cap hit this year, relatively low. Don't think you'll have to extend him.

Shepherd is 3.6M and Saunders is 3.2M savings as a Post-June 1 cut. I think one of the two are gone.
I see that same number on Spotrac's contract management tab for Saunders, but it doesn't make sense.

Cap hit right now: $4.6m
Dead cap hit after June 1: $700k

Looks like $3.9m in savings, but their calculator says $3.2m.

Another transaction that has Louisiana ties.
Interesting

I was going to ask that. DTs do take some time to acclimate to the NFL, right?

Nathan Shepherd, Khalen Saunders, John Ridgeway III, Khristian Boyd.
Don't see much 3-4 positional flexibility with these guys, expect 2-3 of these guys to be gone by the end of training camp. with Shepherd amd/or Saunders cut in the next couple days.
I thought Ridgeway was a 0 or a 1. Maybe not

Not crazy about the player at 30 but he's a much better scheme fit. So could work out well. At his current contract its not bad at all. Have to see what they do there though.

I'm not a huge fan of the age either, but he's still a very good player that shows no sign of decline. And big run stuffers can usually play until at least 34. And this DL needed a serious talent upgrade no matter how it comes. Also, IMO, it's hard to expect a DT you get in the draft to come in and start except maybe a guy like Graham who is unlikely to fall to us. That's a position that requires some time to develop. Plus he will work well in a rotation.

IF ESPN hates it, then I'm all in :)

Saints trade for DT Godchaux
Saints get: DT Davon Godchaux
Patriots get: 2026 seventh-round pick

Saints grade: D+
Patriots grade: B

I really don't understand how you grade any trade that is for a 7th round pick two years from now as a D+. Most 7th round picks get cut in training camp.
