Alert! Patriots trade DT Davon Godchaux to the Saints for 2026 7th round pick (95 Viewers)

It appears they are doing so based on his perceived recent decline in play and salary.

I guess I get the salary part, but we will see how it looks after they rework it. But, overall, even if he's just a rotational guy that only plays on 1st down, he's easily worth a 7th round pick. Especially a 2026 7th round pick.

In 2023 he played more snaps over the Nose, in 2024 he took moresnaps as a DT. Last year he had his best year w/ run stops. The schemes look slightly different. He seemed to do more penetrating in 2024 than 1 gap and a 1/2.

For reference, Sheldon Rankins was just signed a 1 year deal worth 7 million. Godchaux hits us for 5. Not bad

I really don't understand how you grade any trade that is for a 7th round pick two years from now as a D+. Most 7th round picks get cut in training camp.

Basically the author wants the Saints to stop spending any type of money and retreat out of sight until they have $75 million in cap space.

IF ESPN hates it, then I'm all in :)

Saints trade for DT Godchaux
Saints get: DT Davon Godchaux
Patriots get: 2026 seventh-round pick

Saints grade: D+
Patriots grade: B

How can gaining a 7th round pick in a future draft garner a B? They basically have him away.

This article goes into depth about Staley's defense. Where do you see Godchaux playing?

Coming out of LSU, he was projected as a 3-4 DE at 6'3" 310lbs, but now it looks like he's 330lbs.

I am curious if they seem him as a 330lb guy now in the middle or have him drop some weight and go back to the 3-4 DE he was coming into the league. I think we are back to having coaches with a vision who can teach and develop.

Sounds like a guy happy to be coming home.

Edit: Twitter is having major issues this morning. So, here is the quote from Godchaux until Twitter is fixed:

"Home is where the heart is! Excited to be coming home and playing for the great state of Louisiana! A dream come true to play High school ball, College ball, and now NFL in the same state! So ready for this opportunity to play in front of WHODATNATION!! God makes no mistake"

Honestly, IDK. Prior to last year, he'd played mostly as a NT w/ over 60% of his snaps coming from that position. Last year he took 60% of his snaps as a DT via some 4i snaps and only maybe 20% came as a NT. He even lined up over T's and on the edge.

In the 2024 scheme he produced his best year as a run defender w/ 35 run stuffs.

In my earlier post I said NT, and they could certainly put him back there...but his best value may be as one of the DT/DE's in the 4i position. You could potentially see Nathan Shepherd cut.

@Rouxble , will have better insight into his 2024 alignments but he def played less NT last year.
