Payton on being one of the least injured teams in the NFL (1 Viewer)

Outside of McCoy and Miller, the Saints injuries seemed to have nothing to do with conditioning. Olave- concussions, Taysom- torn up knee, Shaheed- knee, meniscus, Ruiz- knee, Kamara- one of the most well-conditioned players in the NFL had a groin injury, Adebo- broken ankle, Carr- abductor injury suffered from hit to ribs and broken hand. Saints' injuries were more about bad luck than conditioning.
Glad someone said it. A sport where freakishly large and fast humans are slamming into one another during practice and games, and they’re all going emerge unscathed??? Give me a break.

I don't think Payton was referencing the Saints organization in any way. I believe he has firmly put that chapter of his coaching career in the rearview. And what good would come of bashing a team that he is three years removed from. We as Saints fans tend to look into things with former players and coaches that fit our narrative and at times, guilty as charged.

No, I think he was talking about the former Broncos coaching staff and their culture and their procedures and what he has done to help them.

Payton doesn't care about the Saints anymore so we should stop caring about what Payton says. Yes, it was a nice interview before the Saints/Broncos game and his time in New Orleans but he is a Bronco now. As they say, he gone...........

The Saints, whether real or perceived, have certainly had issues on the medical side over the years. My question, is whether that is a conditioning/fitness thing controlled by the strength and conditioning staff, or is it a treatment/PT/diagnosis/medical thing controlled by the team doctors/therapists. I assume the issues are a combination of factors but have never been sure where there real gripes are coming form. It seems most of the player gripes over the years (MT/Delvin Breaux) seemed to be more directed at Ochsner and team doctors. I'm just trying to better understand the issue. Saw Benson just renewed her contract with Ochsner. Wonder what Sean Payton would think about that.

There is a luck factor, but if a team is perpetually one of the most healthy or most unhealthy multiple seasons in a row there's something organizational about those results beyond just luck.
not necessarily
chance results includes results that seem like outliers but really are part of overall patterns

I know for certainty that Sean wanted Maholmes at all costs. There’s a reason Drew Brees is sitting in that draft room in 2017.

And we know for certain that Sean couldn't keep his mouth shut about Mahomes and told Andy Reid about him which is why he traded ahead of us to get Mahomes. And, if Sean wanted Mahomes at all costs, why didn't he trade up to make sure we got him?

Again, there's a reason DREW BREES just happened to be sitting in that room during the 2017 draft. A draft where Sean wanted Maholmes but Mickey knew he'd be less inclined to jump on the table to select a QB that high or trade up for one if the franchise leader and his friend Drew Brees is sitting there next to him. Doesn't take a genius to figure that mystery out.

Honestly reading between the lines he’s calling out the Saints organization and Mickey Loomis. He’s basically saying we suck at dealing with injuries and he has some secret formula. I don’t think Sean and Mickey are friends anymore. I’d be surprised if Sean has any REAL friends in life. He is so petty and mean.
SP is correct, the Saints and Pelicans medical staff has been absolutely atrocious.

Control: Sean Payton
Variable: Organization

The Saints have had injury issues for a very long time and it's always an excuse. Sean has been in 2 different spots, and the injury results don't match each other. We don't know what conversations went on behind closed doors, etc, but it's hard to argue against the results in Denver 2 years in a row.
Also, what comes to mind is the misdiagnoses of players and Sean expecting them to be back on the field based on the diagnoses of the doctor, only to find that the injury is way worse than what they thought 3 months ago. This is stuff that sews mistrust with players and makes difficult your ability to attract free agents and build a roster.

Then why didn't Payton fix the issues here in the 15 years he spent here?

If there is anything behind our injury issues beyond bad luck, having older players, and playing on field turf, and I'm not sure there is, it's issues with strength and conditioning and the failure to get guys stretched out before practice and games. And that only applies to soft tissue injuries. And we know that DA was not properly getting them warmed up which led to many of the soft tissue injuries.

As far as misdiagnosed injuries, there have been maybe 2 of those in the last 20 years or so. And that happens. Sometimes it take some time to get a diagnosis correct.

Finally, there is no indication that players, other than Breaux and MT, have any issues with the team on these issues and no indication that free agents avoid the Saints because of some perceived deficiency in the medical staff.

I don't get the Payton hate on this. He's not wrong. The Broncos have been healthy and the Saints haven't. He recognizes something that is very different there than it was here (without saying it). How can you even argue against that? You all sound like bitter ex girlfriends.

This, I mean I know basically the entire Saints medical staff on a personal level so I don't like referring to them negatively, but it is what it is. A couple of them are actually top notch, but as a whole they have really done a terrible job.

Lol. The lengths people will go to the blame Loomis for things. Loomis has plenty of things to be criticized for without making stuff up. If this was the case, Sean would have told every reporter in the country about it by now while he was telling them how he knew that Mahomes was going to be great.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that both Sean and Mickey wanted Brees there in case they took Mahomes so that they could keep a good relationship with him and keep him involved. Having Brees in the room wasn't going to stop Sean from drafting Mahomes.

I don't really see any Payton hate here. But, if there is such a big difference then why didn't Sean fix those things here? And, if he failed to see the issue he's as much to blame as anyone else. But, I don't think Payton had the Saints in mind when he made his comments.

And it does go back to the Payton years for sure. I remember the days when a player would come up limping and it was almost automatically going to be a month before they diagnosed a sports hernia and off they went for surgery.

He's been gone for years now and they have not stopped, but they have in Denver. So my guess is those Ochsner sponsorship dollars aren't under the control of the head coach.
