Actually we have 5 DEs now, that's pretty good, I forgot about Granderson, who could be great as well. I still think this is a sort of replacement for Jordan and if Davenport doesn't work out.

I love when this board doesn't get what they wan't or expect. The melt is always entertaining. Never a dull moment with you all.
One possible theory that explains perhaps some of the confusion or consternation from some individual SR posters surrounding this year's 1st round draft pick IS THAT SOME OF US LEGITIMATELY HAVE NEVER forkING HEARD OF HIM, and its not necessarily that he played for an AAC team like Houston, believe it or not that school's football program has actually put out some very good, God forbid decent players, over the past 45-50 years. University of Houston is not a terrible college football program with a sheetty history, but unlike Ed Oliver, Patrick Turner doesn't strike me as 1st round material compared to who Ravens drafted 2-3 picks later out of Miami or even Jaysen Odeh of Penn State. Those two picks would have likely been or seemed far better long-term investments for our Saints defense over the next decade once Cam, Trey and Davenport are retired and long gone.

Patrick Turner doesn't strike me as Ed Oliver 2.0.

Now the pressure has really increased on Loomis and Ireland - after making a “semi luxury” in the first round they now must absolutely nail each and every pick in the later rounds. After some thought Turner’s pick does make some sense - Cam Jordan is entering his 10th season, Marcus Davenport is talented but frequently injured, the team let Trey Hendrickson walk (in retrospect what a strange move to let him go and then use a super valuable 1st round pick to replace him).

This isn’t like the Saints teams of the recent past - those teams went into the draft with their rosters basically complete so the team could make luxury picks. This team has some serious holes that need filling at CB, LB, and WR. Now those must be filled using day two and three picks. It would have helped to trade out of the first completely and then trade up in the second to get Turner.

What about the armchair gms that come out every year to talk about how every player the saints pick is great even though they had never heard about the player before?
Just because you or any other fan haven’t heard of him doesn’t mean he isn’t talented.

Our front office has drafted very well the past few years, our recently promoted assistant HC (former defensive line coach) turned one of our worst units to its best. Do your research and you’ll see hit fits exactly what we needed and that’s all that matters.

So our last four first-round picks, if I remember correctly, have resulted in Davenport, Ruiz, and now Peyton Turner. I am not impressed.

My great fear earlier today was giving up multiple high picks to trade up. If Turner is an example of sitting back and letting the draft come to you, please trade up in the future. Like the Davenport trade, this pick was metrics-driven and is totally about potential.
