What is the current outlook for our saints in the media. Why are they so down on us. It's not just PFF, but others like CBS sports say the same thing.

With all the changes - most for the better - as well as the players coming back from injury, we should be much better than last year. We have a viable QB, and also did very well in the draft. We upgraded @:

WR
RB
DT
TE

Everyone we lost were all lesser players than what we replaced them with. Last year, we should have won 10 games easily. Injuries killed us. Not to mention bad coaching. Or @ least tentative coaching.

We are clearly a much improved team this year. Every team in the NFL has question marks. That's the nature of the beast in today's NFL. Not even KC is loaded @ every position group.

So, why do they diss the saints so badly. They even graded us @ 24 in our moves in the off-season. I don't get it. Are they that blind. Most don't even have us in the top 10, yet they project us as division winner, which means a home playoff game.

I think that the media can't get past the perception of the old saints that were always the laughing stock of the NFL. Yet, we won a Superbowl, and are almost every year in contention.

So, what will it take to finally shed this perception. Heck, the cowpukes haven't won much since Jimmy Johnson left in the 90's, yet the media still loves them.

I just don't get it.

Vegas has us at 9.5 wins, so it’s not that crazy actually. Obviously I hope they are way off, but I don’t even think our fans know what to expect this year! If we don’t win our division, I will be disappointed, but will our D-line improve, is Michael Thomas healthy, and will Kamara be in uniform in 2023? But my biggest question is Dennis Allen. I hope he has what it takes to lead us to the playoffs!

Historically, how accurate have these media predictions been? I personally don't put much stock in them. Besides the factors they typically mention, there are things like injuries, officiating error skew, and team chemistry that play a part. Not so easy to get a handle on these items, yet as close as games are, they often determine a team's final record. Bottomline, these predictions are educated guesses wrapped in random events. They provide a revenue stream for media during off season, and emotional fodder for anxious fan bases. That's about it.

Dennis Allen has never coached a winning season. Dennis is currently sitting as the 7th worst coach in NFL history by win percentage. He'll be picked to have losing seasons until he can prove he can put a winning one together.

Your long memory of the Saints is not the media's.

Here's what I see and the media sees:
* We had a perennial contender more or less the past 20 years.
* Anchored by 2 Hall of Famers (Payton/Brees)
* We lost those two Hall of Famers.
* We don't have a "Superstar" like Mahomes.
* Dennis Allen has done exactly nothing as a Head Coach in the league.
* As a result we need to prove it.

10 games is a pretty high bar for this group... although we have an "easier" schedule which really guarantees us nothing.

That's it. It's not about the media remembering John Fourcade or anything.

Did we upgrade at DT? That is very much debatable.

Did we upgrade at WR? Only if Michael Thomas is healthy for the first time in three years.

We did likely improve at RB…but only if Kamara isn’t suspended.

Our upgrade at TE had lymphoma diagnosed a few months ago. He should be fine.

I personally don’t mind the skepticism…they’ve earned that the past few years. We still have big question marks all over the field…we’ll need to have a lot fall into place to get to 10 wins. First things first, Carr has to look much better than he did last season.

Right...for all of our excitement for grabbing Carr we completely ignored that he was the 21st ranked QB last year according to NFL.com and not highly per most other "experts". Is it a bogus ranking...maybe, but that is how folks saw him...and that ranking is only 1 spot ahead of the red rocket, in most eyes we've only marginally improved at QB.

We're not going to be viewed as a contender just off GP, we have to prove it. Allen isn't a known winner, Carr isn't either at the pro level...they have to do the work.

On NFL Radio about a week ago, Pat Kirwan and Jimmy Miller were asked about the Saints prospects for 2023. Kirwan said that Saints fans will love Carr until they see him in the red zone, so it made me think that Kirwan posts here under the name @jahsoul357.

Pat also said that, while Carr is a good QB, to put yourself in the shoes of a fan for any of the Saints division rivals… is he so good that they think they won’t have a shot at the division? Both he and Miller said no, which admittedly was a punch in the gut because I like their show and their takes/analysis on the NFL.

As someone said earlier, we have to earn it this year. A QB who has been good but not great, and a HC without a winning season. I’d like to believe we made the right moves to turn it around this year, but we have to go out and win some games before anyone will see us as the clear top team in the NFCS.

To be fair, Carr has absolutely been bad in the red zone. That's not to say he can't improve. It's not to say it is even all his fault (you could certainly say the Saints have a better cache of weapons if all are on the field). But he has definitely been beyond bad in the red zone, especially compared to the rest of the league.

I dang near spit out my water..lol.
Honestly, that's all I've been saying from the jump. Due to unbalanced reporting, we've come to believe that Carr is this major upgrade but the reality is there was never anything tangible to quantify or qualify that opinion, especially when you realize that we lost a lot of games because we could not convert in the red zone. No matter how folks want to slice it:

To be fair, Carr has absolutely been bad in the red zone. That's not to say he can't improve. It's not to say it is even all his fault (you could certainly say the Saints have a better cache of weapons if all are on the field). And this is all I've said. I'm not on the "it take weapons" train, as our 2021 squad consisted of nothing but UDFAs, Trautman, and Kamara and the first 5-6 games of the season, our RZ conversion rate was freaking 93%. I think it has more to do with coaching and the QB itself, because things change when you have a short field to work with. Even with our RZ conversion rate tanking mid season in 2021, it was still better than last season.

I'm hopeful that it can get turned around but I wouldn't bet my life on it.

Carr leads the NFL in 4th QTR/ OT comebacks since he entered the league. He has largely done so despite a subpar line and inconsistent weapons. Y'all trying to beat up on him for red zone efficiency and comparing him to Dalton shows you haven't really watched him play much.

With the weapons we have Carr is going to ball out and we will have an elite offense.
