Report: Vrabel's OC could be McDaniels [mod edit] (12 Viewers)

Dave Ziegler was the GM in Vegas when all of the Carr stuff went down and the Saints hired him anyway. Ziegler was also Josh McDaniels college roommate and it was McDaniels that brought him to the NFL. They worked together for years in Denver, NE and Vegas.

"In 2010, Ziegler's former college roommate, Josh McDaniels, was named head coach of the Denver Broncos and brought Ziegler on as a player personnel assistant.[3] He was promoted to area scout in 2011 and to pro scout in 2012."

You might need to look at the 2008, 2021, and 2022 NFL seasons...lol. I would not want him as an HC but I would take him every day of the week and twice on Sunday as an OC.
What would I be looking at that's so impressive?

He took Mac Jones to the playoffs and made him look like a star while having the 6th rated offense in 2021.
Thats a HUGE exaggeration.

Seems like in 2021 there were several 5000 yard passers, and I know the top 10 QBs all had 4000+ yards (including Carr)

Mac Jones had like 3800 yards, 22 TDs and 13 ints.

That team had an ELITE defense, forced a TON of turnovers and had a monster running game (2K rushing)

Jones was a solid game manager, but FAR from looking like a "star"

How is that exaggerated? He had his best season as pro and they had one of the best offenses in the league that year. He even made the pro bowl.

Too much doom.

The Jets have awful ownership, and a washed Aaron Rodgers who will be forced on the next coach. It’s a graveyard for head coaches. The Raiders also have a penchant for not giving coaches time to build before firing them, and that’s the toughest division in football. Anybody that goes there has little chance to win and retain their job and is likely looking at being fired within two seasons.

People underestimate what 3-4 years of job security in a middling division means for a HCing prospect if he’s got a real plan to succeed.

Even the Jags are heavily flawed with an awful GM no one wants to work for and a bazillion dollar below average QB.

I think Jets, Raiders, Jags are interchangeable jobs for a HC and all with QB, GM, Owner issues. Saints option is a take full control of a team with time to make changes minus the cap to take real action in 2025 and limitations in 2026. A good HC candidate will want a 4yr+ deal with zero offset language because he may have a DA-like record for two years.

This is why Vrabel is my choice over any OC candidates...

2008: 11-5 season with freaking Matt Cassell
2021: 10-7 playoff season with rookie Mac Jones and Damien Harris leading a top 10 scoring offense
2022: #12 scoring offense in the NFL and one of Carr's most productive seasons in the NFL

I don't know if you know this or not, but those 3800 yards and 22TDs were still good for Top 16 in the NFL. that season. Also, every QB that you think is a "star" today is benefitting from those exact same things that used as somewhat of a knock to Jones. The top teams in the NFL are led by "game managers" who have top defenses and run games.

I agree that Loomis is not looking for a "yes" man to be head coach. Loomis does not come from a personnel background like, say, Bill Polian and has always been willing to give his head coaches more authority than some other general managers.

I also do not believe that retaining certain assistants is an absolute condition on getting a job offer. If Mike Vrabel says I want to come to New Orleans, but I want to name my staff, there would be no problem. But unquestionably in the interviews, there will be a discussion of what coaches the candidate would try to hire as assistants. My guess is that in that discussion, Loomis may say the team has two or three assistants the organization thinks highly of and asks whether the candidate would consider retaining those coaches. To use Klint Kubiak as an example, the candidate's response may be that I have always wanted coach X to be my offensive coordinator. Or it may be that I have heard only good things about Kubiak, and though I would need to visit extensively with him to ensure personal and philosophical compatibility, I would be open to visiting with and retaining him. The Saints could then weigh the responses in assessing which candidate it wants to pursue.

Wild

top 16 is mid tier, and you calling that "star"

If one of the prerequisites for the new coach is keeping Carr, then it's doomed to begin with.

Carr should be gone now. Eat the hit. Dude cannot be on the team next year.

Underhill said that he spoke to someone close to one of the candidates to be interviewed and said they were convinced its a 2 year job to turn it around.

That seems really unrealistic to me and sends the message that hes going to continue to kick the can down the road. And if this is true, Loomis is delusional.

I think his point is that there is no way Carr would want to work for Josh McDaniels again and would want to find a way out of NO if he were hired.

He didn't agree to a trade last time with the Raiders. Carr will not give up any money or control. He would probably require the team to release him in that situation.
