Rizzi should be the permanent Head Coach (1 Viewer)

Way early to even think about a head coach hire. We did a very poor job 3 years ago and paid a huge price in not doing true due diligence.

I do think Rizzi may have what it takes to be a decent or even good head coach in the NFL, but we'll have to wait and see. Even if thats true though, its typically not ideal to have a head coach is anything less than an offensive minded/QB guru unless you have a stable, good franchise QB.

Defensive minded coaches and special team coaches historically struggle to develop franchise QB's despite a few who have gold in the past like Bellichek (Brady).

I mean just recently Stroud and Lamar Jackson developed under Demeco Ryans and John Harbaugh. In addition to Belichick/Brady. Marino developed under Shula. There are probably more but those are 4 off the top of my head. And Steve Young only spent like one year under Bill Walsh before Siefert became the head coach.

I get that offensive coaches are the hot names now. But you just pick the best coach to lead a team and you have to count on him to pick the right coordinators on both sides of the ball if he's not an OC or a DC.

As far as Rizzi, he has 8 games to earn the job. I personally want to start fresh with someone not on the current staff, but Rizzi could change my mind and, if he does earn the job, they need to let him pick his own coordinators and staff.

We've forced ourselves into Rizzi being the permanent guy for at least a year or two because the job got less attractive once we fired Allen mid-season. Best case scenario is truly for Rizzi to run w/ it. Otherwise we'll probably miss out on the Lions OC because there will be better jobs.

I like Rizzi though

Right now I'm more focused on cap & personnel. Forget wins & losses, if Rizzi has this team playing hard & the locker room is behind him I have no problem keeping him on for one or two more years while the salary cap is cleaned & hopefully a couple good to great drafts.

Not suggesting…..just tossing it out there.

He hasn’t been a head coach in the NFL before, but neither had Sean Payton and Dan Campbell.

The best thing you can get in this position is a leader that everyone loves, respects, can’t wait to follow into battle.

Obviously returns are way too early, but Rizzi’s vibe is that everyone seems to love this guy.

A smart head coach hires cutting edge and brilliant OC and DC. And then his job is to create and handle the atmosphere.

Like Dan Campbell
What in the world do you know about Rizzi to make that claim? I have not been impressed with the lack of discipline of his special teams group, so he is in "prove it" mode from here on in.

I think Aaron Glenn will be a strong candidate for the job given the connections to the organization, his success in Detroit, and the fact that he was a candidate last time. Mark Brunell could be a possibility for similar reasons. I'd prefer Glenn but I don't think not being able to get Ben Johnson is a reason to keep Rizzi unless he really impresses in the last 8 games.

He's who I wanted over DA. That said, Tipton is one of the starting receivers. He will be lucky to win 2 more games this season with this roster even if he is a good coach, so the odds are stacked against him. But still, I'm hopeful.
Maybe, maybe not. A good coach can get his team to play at a greater level than the sum of its parts. The exact opposite of what DA did. DA couldn't even get them to play up to the sum of their parts. With his passion and motivation, he may be able to squeeze blood out of a turnip.

Rizzi isn't the guy. Maybe he is the guy to slog through the next season and a half. I don't know. But we need a new GM, and that GM needs to pick his own HC. A MASSIVE part of that is the new GM. Mickey only knows old ways from old days. A relic of a bygone era. We are a sofa set covered in faded flowers and the smell of cigarettes. The entire organization. We need new and fresh. The new era needs to completely sever itself from the old one.

But we are, and should be, prepared to be terrible for the duration of the next 25 games. And that's ok. We have to be ok with being terrible. It's a necessary part of this process to clear off the full on Loomising we've experience for 4-5 years. Because those 25 games, they couldve already happened, twice. But we are here, 2-3 years too late, but we are where we need to be to resurrect this franchise. IF Loomis steps aside. Him ushering himself out or being ushered out is critical step 2 in this process.

The sunshine pumper coalition was/is fine being terrible under the facade of not being terrible. So I don't see the problem with being openly terrible. Its the means to an end. There's just no way around the band aid being ripped off and the wound taking 25 games to heal.

I agree with you that it's too early to think about who the next permanent HC is and that offering Rizzi the job right now is a bad idea, we have an opportunity to see how he performs in this role as well as how the players respond to his coaching in terms of effort, camaraderie, even the kind of things they put out on social media for that matter. The organization should take full advantage of that.

I'm not sure who's going to be in charge of hiring at this point (though right now it would be Loomis) but from my perspective the promotion of Dennis Allen was under such odd circumstances that I'm willing to give the front office a bit of a pass on it. They clearly didn't believe Sean Payton would actually walk away (neither did a majority of the players), if I remember correctly Gayle even mentioned during Payton's retirement presser or the frenzy around it that she actually floated the idea of a one year sabbatical which Payton declined. The group of players we had here, even without the HOF QB, was still relatively young/entering their prime only 5 years removed from that 2017 draft. There was hope that Michael Thomas could be Michael Thomas again, defense was looking like a potential juggernaut (minus the end of halves), etc. On top of all that by all accounts Payton himself recommended Dennis Allen. Allen had just rebuilt our defense from horrible to capable of making a Super Bowl (everyone knows what happened in that NFCCG). His defensive players at least seemed to have his back. The only thing that pointed against it was his time in Oakland where coaches have been failing pretty much since Bill Callahan's Super Bowl appearance. Turns out that red flag should've been a black flag but in my opinion them giving Allen a shot wasn't the worst decision at the time. With the benefit of hindsight, it obviously was a bad one.

I’m for him finishing out this season and having next season as an evaluation. Depending on how Wood’s and Kibiak continue to do calling plays, he may bring in someone new.

No matter who we bring in as HC, next season is going to be bad. It would be a great time to eat some dead cap space and evaluate our young players. Not too many guys are going to want to part of that their first year as HC. If they do then bring them on.

Then the following year if Rizzi has done well he can be retained or if the team is still falling apart bring in a new outside HC and some new coordinators. With actual cap space and ability to get the team back on the right track, maybe we will be contenders again.

I’ll just be happy to have a coach that isn’t calling offense or defense and instead being equally involved in all aspects of the game.

I’m curious to see how that goes since it’s been ages since we’ve had that.

Yep…just managing the people, the players, motivating, fully concentrating on situational decisions, yelling at refs, always doing what he thinks is best for the TEAM and not just what’s best for his side of the ball to not get put in a bad spot, etc.

There’s a benefit to this sort of setup where your HC isn’t tied down trying to fully run one side of the ball.

Rizzi's moves today like Brian Young for DLINE coach, his convos with Dan Campbell and Bill Parcells sells him for me. He should be the permanent HC going forward. He is making fast and sensible moves
