Roseanne: The Revival (controversy erupts over tweet by Roseanne, ABC cancels show)

They played that off by suggesting that the original ending was just a fantasy from the book she was writing. I don't think they ever won the lottery in this version of their reality either.

Both Beckys were also in last nights episode.

sad that i know this but yes the end of the last episode had her sitting at the kitchen table in the same old house writing her "novel"

what she wrote was

they never did win the lottery
her sister was gay
Becky was really married to the big bang guy (forgot his name in the show)
Darleene was really married to Mark
Dan died

I never understood the appeal of shows like Roseanne that are supposed to be so ‘real’.. i remember way back when it first aired, it was celebrated because , oh theyre living paycheck to paycheck and they are fat slobs like most Americans.. why would anyone want to watch that? I mean, i get wanting to see things that are realistic that you would never get to experience, like a movie about Seal Team Six killing Bin Laden or something— it’s real but it’s stuff i dont see in my daily life.. but if you are a ‘typical American’, why would you want to watch something that is a reflection of your daily struggles? In general, i watch movies and tv shows for escapism, but that’s just me.

Well no one would want to watch an unfunny drama about Roseanne. But kind of the entire premise of observational humor is that it finds humor in every day situations. You're not relying on wacky settings or storylines or Steve Urkel to give the audience their yuks.

How did this work?

As an aside, I drive my wife nuts patting myself on the back, because I predicted back around 2005 that the TV networks were about to run out of ideas and eventually were going to resort to reviving old shows.

Apparently, "Martin" is the next 90's show they're looking to revive.

I like these concepts of bringing old shows back and checking in on some of our TV friends from yester-year and seeing them in an adapted environment. I was never a big Roseanne guy, but still seems like a fun idea.

Fair enough.. but when i think of ‘observational comedy’, i think of shows like Seinfeld, which wasn’t realistic in the least — four single friends in their 30s/40s who get into wacky situations constantly— but is hilarious... There’s room for all these types of shows, we all enjoy different stuff— i was just saying that i dont find the everyday slice-of-life type of shows like Roseanne to be entertaining, generally speaking.

Laugh tracks never bugged me growing up in the 90's/early 2000's. Hell I don't think I really even noticed them. But after years of watching shows without them starting with the trendsetters (Arrested Development, The Office, 30 Rock) it's pretty much impossible to go back.

I'll never understand how BBT stays so popular. About the only show I can rerun like that is Raymond and that's simply because Marie and Frank are pretty much my grandparents and it cracks me up.

I bought the entire MASH series on DVD just so I can watch it without the laugh track.

I can watch some shows with laugh tracks(I definitely prefer not having one), but I found the one they used to be intrusive. It was like every joke was the funniest thing ever. Sometimes it's ok to pipe in a more subdued reaction. I guess it's just me.

But, other than that one gripe, the show was fine. I loved the first 5 or 6 seasons of the original series, and it was fun "catching up." I think they handled certain issues in our society in a rational, moderately funny way. I'm not adding the show to my DVR list, but I'll probably check in on it occasionally.

A reboot of Perfect Strangers or Family Matters would be interesting as well.

It's not like reviving old TV shows is a new idea for the networks. They have tried it with lots of shows.

SPOILER ALERT

The original Becky is their daughter, and she’s about to be a surrogate for a character being played by the actress who played replacement Becky.

well said.

Always found her kind of screechy and annoying.

The exterior house they use for filming is about 5 minutes from where I work, same for the bar they go to. Hometown of the guy who originally created and wrote the show, Matt Williams. The actual interior sets are in California or wherever they filmed though.
