Roseanne: The Revival (controversy erupts over tweet by Roseanne, ABC cancels show) (1 Viewer)

I watched the first episode last night. The whole time it felt like I was in some time warped alternate universe. I enjoyed it, although I am not sure it was because of the humor, or the weird trippy feeling I had watching these same characters for the first time in 20+ years.

Didn't watch back then, will not watch now.

I first saw Roseanne as a stand up in that Rodney Dangerfield comedy show from his club, the one that introduced Seinfeld, Kinison, Dice Clay, etc. to the masses. Found her totally unfunny, and her voice annoys me.

I watched the first two episodes last night mostly because my wife wanted to, but I'll admit to a bit of my own curiosity.

I thought it was pretty good. It's interesting because I'm not entirely sure real-life Roseanne the Trump supporter in the guise of fictional Roseanne the Trump supporter, comes off all that well as a Trump defender. Actually she comes off looking pretty bad and intellectually painted into a corner in her argument with Jackie, and the only reason they reconcile is because Jackie is willing to give way more ground just to save their relationship.

If real-life Roseanne is signing off on the writing here (and I imagine she has to be) then I have to give her a ton of credit for letting the show examine both sides of the divide and acknowledge shortcomings all around, rather than just pushing her own views down our throats constantly. It's definitely nothing like her Twitter behavior would lead you to think it would be like.

I still find her screechy and obnoxious, but a little less so. Age takes the edge off that sometimes.

... and just in case anyone forgot:

it is her delivery; it doesn’t always work. the few times she was on larry sanders show, she did well, but she devil is a guilty pleasure movie.

i watch very little television..records are better in my opinion.but i do enjoy mike and molly if it's on.

Everybody loves Raymond is good..do you remember the wonder years ?for the Roseanne character and the one that plays the role..I really don't like a filthy mouth loud voice on a gal...hip.Goodman seems like a pretty cool cat..he did treme well..I couldn't see the loudmouth pulling any part in that hbo series...
I find her to be rude and crass...and she once rented a tropical island ..was drunk all of the time and cut down staff...I guess some people find it difficult to treat another human being....like a fellow human being.

Agreed, kevin, well put. I don’t think she’s a decent human being.

======================================================

Unfortunately for Trump supporters, Roseanne is like that cinnamon roll in which some people claim to see the face of Jesus.

If you’re looking for saviors in your pastry, you’ll eventually find it. If you’re looking for pro-Trump proselytizing in Roseanne, you’ll be feasting on your own imagination.

Because when you look at the actual content of the first three shows, you see a deliberate lack of any substantive arguments, facts, statistics, or credible authorities that generally are the tools of forming educated opinions.

It’s not there, nor should we expect it. It’s a sitcom, folks, not a poli-sci lecture.

What you will find is a powerful reflection of the oppressive daily struggles that many Americans deal with.

The show doesn’t directly preach a political take on these issues, but merely by highlighting them, it’s clear to those who follow legitimate news sources that the Conners’ problems, which have existed through previous administrations, have been exasperated by the Trump Administration.

Trump’s attacks on health care, including Medicaid, have worsened the Conners’ ability to afford necessary medication.

Trump’s support of legislation targeting the LGBTQ community will affect the Conners’ gender-fluid grandson, not just regarding clothing choices, but in legitimizing public animosity against him.

Administration rollbacks on social welfare programs could impact the Conners children fighting to make ends meet. The biggest issue for the Conners is the economy.

Unemployment and economic growth are on par with President Obama’s last term, so Trump has been able to continue the momentum.

But Trumps’ massive tax cut threatens to add a huge budget deficit which means even greater cuts to programs that protect and support people like the Conners.

Basically, Roseanne Conners is like a student at Trump University during the investigation of fraud, still hoping her degree will mean something.....................

^ Yeah, I agree with all that.

I haven't seen the 3rd episode, but the 1st two seem to be making a pretty strong point against Trump-ism. That's why it surprises me a little that Roseanne the real-life person is signing off on the scripts. They really don't portray her real-life views at all.

Hell she even says in the first one "Because he promised us jobs!" in an exasperated voice, and it comes off with some resignation, like now she understands that it was all empty promises. I also like that she lends a lot of humanity/empathy to the average Trump voter by standing up for her grandson. I think they're trying to break down a lot of stereotypes on both sides of the divide.

Cancelled after Roseanne goes on twitter rant.

Wow, ABC acted swiftly. I was not expecting that, but I see why they did it. Her "planet of the apes" comments could not have been more blatantly racist.

Sometimes I think we can be too politically correct. And sometimes its hard to know what is racist, what is satire and what is a poor choice of words. I didn't think Jimmy the Greek should have been fired for saying what he did, I didn't think he meant it to be racist. And when Cosell said "run like a monkey" I thought he might have used the same words to describe a shifty, small white kick returner.

There was no gray line with what Barr said. She apologized, but it was too late. She had confirmed what many thought, she truly is a racist. I cant think of any other way to interpret her hateful comments.

I feel bad for Sara Gilbert who was really pretty incredible. I hope they figure out a way to spin it off into a show that focuses on her - that way more interests me than any other aspect of the show they were doing anyway.
