Rumor- "samuel Said To Be A "done Deal"" (1 Viewer)

you know, i've been saying i dont want him
but what the hell
i pray this guy is in black and gold

I hope like **** we get Samuel. We are in dire need of help at cb (captain obvious) and MM is not likely to be at 100% this year if indeed he is able to return at all in 2008. Remember, he tore hsi ACL very late last year, wasn't it the last game?

Domonique Foxworth is a fa in Denver and, while he's not a shut-down corner like Samuel, would be an excellent compliment to Samuel.

It was against Philly week 16.

Same here. I didn't want him for that price but we need to get it done.

I'm not sold on Asante. I don't think he is physical enough to play man up on most of these guys. I'd rather use that money to get a guy like Lance Briggs and Drayton Florence.

*not getting hopes up* but would be a great addition........and who cares how much money it is it ain't my money and it will seem like peanuts 5 years from now anyway.

*I'll believe it when it happens* Samuel would improve this defense that is lacking for a playmaker in the defensive backfield. The team broke the bank for Brees and look how well that turned out, its time this team did the same thing on the defensive side of the ball.

No salary cap would be very bad news for the Saints.

you are so right on that one. The Cowboys, and all big market teams would be king ala the 1990's and the small market teams couldnt sign big FA's

Well, if this is true, the people who think the FO is sitting on their hands all the time will definitely have to lighten up the criticism. The Saints will probably still draft a CB because of MM's injury so late in the season. A first day pick for a DB will improve the team immensely. Face it, if the Saints had been better against the pass this past season, they would have won at least three more games, possibly four. I know that's "woulda, coulda, shoulda" thinking, but that's how the team must be evaluated. They made QB's who wouldn't be a starter on the worst QB-situation teams look like golden boys.

And many will complain, both here and in the media, that the Saints overspent, but that's the going price for a top CB these days, and while he did get burned a few times against the Giants, and a few other teams in the closing weeks, he is still one of the best in the league, and is at his best when he plays man-to-man, according to reports referenced already in this thread.

Crazy statement. LT's contract in 04 made him the highest paid RB in the history of the game, did he "get the job done"? Other players on huge contracts include Brian Urlacher, Peyton Manning, Ray Lewis and now Bob Sanders.

In fact I like the Sanders comparison. As we've all said, the $100m bit isn't the scary thing about the proposed contract because he'll never finish it. The bit that makes you gulp is the $24-30m (depending on what you read) guaranteed money. Well Sanders is on $20m guaranteed for his 5 year contract. Like it or not, as you've already pointed out, that is the going rate for a top DB these days. So if we're really serious about becoming a perennial playoff contender, then that's the kind of money we're talking.

Now you can say you don't think he's worth it. You can say you don't think anyone is worth it (although market forces would obviously disagree). But to say that if you pay him that much he won't get the job done is ridiculous.

I don't think anyone here believes that signing Samuel would instantly transform our Defense - he is just one part of a very complicated puzzle. And obviously he's going to have a lot of pressure on him, wherever he goes. But I hope he does come to NO. I hope he takes his place as a starting Corner and continues the excellent play we've seen from him in New England. If he does that, as far as I'm concerned, he's earned his money, however much it does eventually turn out to be.

To compare LT and Manning to Samuel has to be the worst comparison I've ever heard. The Saints could use the money it would take to sign Samuel and sign WR Johnson, CB Florence and a guy like DT Starks. I think they would get much more return on their money from the latter. Clements wasn't the missing link to the 49ers and Samuel won't be for the Saints. The Saints are 5 players away from being a quality defense. Plus, they don't have a #2 WR. We all have hope for Meachem but to pencil him in without a backup plan would be crazy, and they don't have a NFL caliber TE. Then, throw in Colston getting a new deal and with Smith and Evans deals looming, paying one guy who in my opinion benefited greatly from the talent around him, which he won't have in New Orleans, would not be the best for the organization. That being said, the Saints should be able to get a starting CB, MLB, and DT in the draft. With Samuel, that would be great. I understand signing Samuel. But, he alone isn't going to get it done.
